3 The Pastor s Two Cents Touching the hem of Jesus garment In the Gospel this weekend we are told, within a single story, how Jesus cured two women (The daughter of Jairus, a thirteen year old girl, and a woman who had been hemorrhaging for eighteen years.) who, on the surface, seem to have very little in common. Upon closer inspection, one of the tings these two women have in common is this: For different reasons, both are unable to get pregnant and give life; the young girl, because she dies at puberty, just as she has the radical possibility of getting pregnant, and the other woman, because the forces inside her that are meant to give life are damaged and hemorrhaging, making it impossible for her to maintain a pregnancy. What Jesus does is give back to both women the possibility of giving life, in one case by stopping the flow of blood and in the other by starting it. We all need a similar miracle!! Very often, By the time we're finally ready to give life; some deep parts of us have already died or are too cold and lifeless to ever become pregnant (life giving). As well, like the woman whose internal bleeding makes it impossible for her to get pregnant, we too are wounded in ways that have us forever hemorrhaging out the life forces we need in order to give life. Parts of us have died and parts of us have been wounded and we are forever hemorrhaging in body, heart, and soul. This makes it hard for us to give life, or even live life. So, How do we, like the woman, touch the hem of His garment so as to be healed? How do we, like Jairus' daughter, let Jesus take us by the hand and restore to us our fertility? Alcoholics Anonymous has always known how this can be done and the Catholic Church has always tried to teach it in calling us to receive Holy Eucharist at least weekly and calling us to regular reception of the grace of Reconciliation. Willpower, while important, is not enough. Only by touching some higher power and this is most easily done inside a community can we actually change our lives. Therapy too is helpful to a point, but only to a point. In the end, the power to give life can only be restored to us through grace and community, through letting a power beyond give us something that we cannot give to ourselves. Then, and only then, will those parts of us that are dead or diseased begin again to give life. May the Eucharist we receive give us the life giving grace we need to be healed and strengthened to then bring that life giving grace to those we encounter. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. The Sunday Meals program is a soup kitchen that is manned by Hornell area church and community volunteers. Soup Kitchens have a longstanding community history in the United States, dating back to the late 1800 s. Businesses and other groups have always stepped up to support members of their own communities who need a little extra help. Without your support we would not be able to provide these services to the men, women, and children who visit our local soup kitchen. At our Sunday Meals program teams take turns preparing and serving the meals one Sunday, every 2-3 months or so. Recently, one of our OLV soup kitchen teams mentioned that they have room for new team members! Over the past several months they have lost members due to illness and other health concerns. They could use 3-4 new volunteers who are dedicated to helping feed the poor! Volunteers are also needed to help make deserts for the meals. 5 Parish Emergency Number We now have an Emergency phone number that rings into a live answering service. This is to be used for Emergencies Only and after business hours, needing the attention of a Priest. The number is Van for Sister Stan The Van for Sr. Stan is on its way to Africa!!! Thank you to ALL who donated. We were able to purchase a 15 passenger, 2017 Chevy Van. It has been filled with humanitarian goods for the orphanage and should tentatively arrive in Ghana, Africa on July 9. Please keep the safe transportation of the van and its goods in your prayers. Thanks to you, the children are gong to have safe transportation! May God bless your generosity. When you have Christ, you are rich and have need of nothing else....thomas A Kempis The Gospel According to St. Thérèse Beginning Sunday, July 15th at 3:30PM in OLOV Meeting Room Continuing Adult Faith Formation Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most popular saints of our time and for good reason. As Pope St. John Paul II wrote when declaring her a doctor of the Church, Thérèse s little way is nothing other than the gospel way of holiness for all. In these classes we will explore some the insights St. Thérèse gave us about God and his merciful love. She was inspired by the Gospel to find a new and more direct way to heaven. This simple cloistered French nun shared great secrets to help us all become saints. Sign-up sheets are available at the church entrances June 24 th July 8 st. A suggested donation of $11 per book is suggested to help the parish offset the cost of the book. Family things to do for the Summer Write a family prayer to say every Sunday this summer. Catch fireflies in a jar. Release them before bedtime. Attend daily Mass some day this week. Pray for your family. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more (Luke 12:48) Please remember to call the office to have your friends and loved ones removed from the sick list when the need is past. Please call: Isabel Nobilski or Donna Kull Thoughts from those who come to the Chapel of Adoration I have been coming to Chapel for many years, perhaps since it was offered to us in the beginning! After a stressful day at work with phones ringing and visitors, the Chapel hour is so peaceful and calm! I am filled with love and gratitude! I think for those who have the time, an hour a week or substituting would be worth a try! You would be amazed how much so little time in silence and prayer can lift your spirits! Forgive yourself first Forgiveness can be a gift we easily offer to others but deny ourselves. Yet, learning to forgive ourselves is a critical ingredient in the ability to forgive others. Consider offering yourself the loving gift of forgiveness: Release the emotion. A well formed conscience feels guilt for sin. A mistake triggers sadness and regret. Holding on to these negative feeling makes them patterns that become part of who we are. Instead, attack the emotion associated with the transgression and release it. Go to Confession, perform acts of kindness, make amends to change the way you look at yourself. Clarify morals. The reason most of us feel ashamed of our wrongdoings is because they are out of line with our faith and morals. Fortunately, examining our actions can actually clue us into what we really feel is important. Bringing our actions in line with our beliefs is a positive outcome from transgressions. Growth makes forgiveness possible. Give yourself a do over. Refusing to forgive ourselves means we are locked in the past. Instead, the goal is to learn from the experience to avoid repetition. To help, write down how you would act differently if you had the chance to do it again. You will see the skills you have acquired as a result and be able to move on to a better future. Lost and Found The Lost and Found Box at the Elm Street Entrance to St. Ann s is overflowing with various articles! Items will be disposed of June 30th. A Sunday Gospel Reflections July 1, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 5: Gospel Summary - Mark tells two stories at the same time in this Gospel. First of all, in the crowd, a woman who had been suffering with an illness for many years, touched Jesus robe and was immediately healed. At the same time, walking with Jesus in the crowd is Jairus, a prominent official of the synagogue. Jairus had searched out Jesus to ask for his help in healing his daughter. When the woman touched Jesus robe, he felt the healing energy flow through him and searched out the person who had touched him. When the woman came forward, Jesus told her that she was healed by her own faith. At that very moment, people from the official s house came to him telling him that his daughter was dead, that he should not bother with the teacher anymore but come home. Jesus went with the man and healed his daughter. Reflection for Families - As parents we can easily understand the synagogue official s desperation in seeking out Jesus. It is clear from the response of those who came to get him that he was moving outside the circle of his friends. They told him not to trouble the teacher anymore, perhaps as much as to ask why he even bothered in the first place. They did not have his faith. Parents will fight to the end and not hold back any energy in an effort to save their children. But we are only human and today s Gospel reminds us that we can t manage alone. We need God s help and must continue to have faith in God s plan for us and for our children. Bringing the Gospel into your family - Does your family know people who are sick? Make a prayer card for these people and lift them up in prayer everyday. You might even send them a cheerful note or card and let them know your family is praying for them. Discussion Starters I had experience once with God s healing power when Like the hemorrhaging woman in today s Gospel, I have seen great strength in someone when One area of my life where I wish my faith was as strong as the woman s and Jairus is...
