The Pastor s Two Cents Open for Forgiveness Last Sunday at the 10:30 am Mass we prayed A Scrutiny with the Elect preparing for the Easter Sacraments.

The prayer we prayed was not just for them but for all of us. This Wednesday, throughout our diocese, all parishes will be offering a Day of Penance and Mercy.

3 The Pastor s Two Cents Open for Forgiveness Last Sunday at the 10:30 am Mass we prayed A Scrutiny with the Elect preparing for the Easter Sacraments. In this prayer we prayed: Let us all pray at this time...to be given a spirit of repentance, a sense of sin and strength of will to live in true freedom as children of God. The prayer we prayed was not just for them but for all of us. This Wednesday, throughout our diocese, all parishes will be offering a Day of Penance and Mercy. This opportunity will be offered in parishes generally from 12:30 pm till 7:30 pm. Each parish may need to make adjustments to this schedule depending on circumstances so you should check with a particular parish to take advantage of this opportunity. Here at Our Lady of the Valley we will have a 12:10 Mass on that day at St. Ann s. Then at 12:45 I will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Ann s until 5:00 pm. Then I will travel to St. Mary s, where I will remain until 7:00 pm. While the season of Lent is a time for us to recognize the areas in our lives where we have fallen short of God s call to us; it is never to contribute to a sense of hopelessness. God s mercy and love is always greater than our sin! This day of Penance and Mercy is meant be a day to celebrate that fact and to prepare our hearts to renew our Baptismal promises with joy at Easter. St. Ann s Church: 12:45p - 5:00p St. Mary s Church: 5:30p - 7:00p While God and the church are always open for forgiveness, this day offers us a unique opportunity to celebrate this fact throughout our diocese and respond to God s invitation. A Veteran s Way of the Cross Fr. James Jaeger, a retired Chaplain for the U.S. Air Force, will be offering a special series of presentations on the Way of the Cross, for Veterans, during Lent. If you are a veteran, or someone you know is a veteran, and would be interested in these presentations, please come join Fr. Jim at St. Mary s church in Bath, NY. Each evening focuses on one station. The reflection afterwards encourages veterans to identify with Jesus in his Passion as their comrade in suffering, and focuses on a specific aspect of veteran life-experience. (Good Friday) REMEMBER, PLEASE: Veterans Only Refresh kindness during Lent Our youngsters need us to help them become caring, respectful children of God. Lent is an appropriate time to refresh our family commitment to kindness. Emphasize manners. Common courtesy is a sign of kindness both at home and in public. During Lent look for opportunities to model and encourage the liberal use of please, thank you, you re welcome, and excuse me. Open doors, pull out chairs, wish others have a nice day, and be patient even under trying circumstances. Stay calm. The stress of daily life can try anyone s temper but experts agree that yelling regularly can create a harmful environment in a home. Instead, speak calmly, lovingly, and ask others to do the same. Model Gentleness. React gently to your child when they do something wrong, deliberately or by accident. And the many pro-lifers I know live a much deeper kind of discipleship than single issue politics. But they do understand that the cornerstone of Catholic social teaching is protecting human life from conception to natural death. Sunday of Lent John 3:14-21 Gospel Summary - This Gospel passage contains one of the most beloved and well-known verses of Scripture: For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life (John 3:16). Indeed, God s great love for us is clearly presented in this Gospel reading. The Gospel also calls us to keep coming into the light, to turn from our wicked ways, and to live the truth. Reflection for Families - God sent His Son into the world with a purpose, and that purpose was to save and to redeem those who believed in him. Take time to think about the world into which you are sending your children. What are you doing to prepare them to fulfill their purpose, their call, as sons and daughters of God? How are you showing them what it means to come to the light and to live the truth? Bringing the Gospel into your family - Think of one or more persons your family knows who might be experiencing a time of darkness, at a time when it is difficult for them to remember that God loves them. Decide on ways your family can reach out to those persons - perhaps by sending cards, making phone calls, fixing meals, or spending time with them. Make an action plan to follow through on your decisions.
