3 The Pastor s Two Cents The winter solstice arrived on December 21st, the shortest day of the year. We will now enjoy a little more light each day. Christmas itself is a feast of lights. Trees are brought into homes and made radiant with brilliant lights and yards are also illumined. In other ways too, our lives are aglow with light. Often families are reunited; bonds of love and friendship are strengthened, and memories are brought to birth. These events of grace truly light up our lives. The readings for today also speak of light. Isaiah promises a light full of hope. Jerusalem went through destruction and forced migration and is now in desperate need of rebuilding a situation that has repeated itself down through the ages, even to our own day. The prophet proclaims that the darkness of despair has been lifted, and a new day of restoration has dawned. At last, the light has come! In the Gospel, the magi are led to the child by the light of a star. They continue to follow that star even after encountering the darkness of Herod. It is interesting that after they leave their gifts for the infant Jesus they departed for their country by another way. They continued to follow the light and did not succumb to the temptation of darkness. We hear nothing more of the Magi. Fr. Ron Rolheiser suggests,...their slipping away into anonymity is a crucial part of their gift. The idea is that they now disappear because they can now disappear. They have placed their gifts at the feet of the young king and can now leave everything safely in his hands. His star has eclipsed theirs. Unlike Herod, the Magi are not threatened by the light of the new born king. No, they are blessed by the new born king! We are called to learn from the Magi. To bless another person is to give away some of one s own life so that the other might benefit for his or her journey, Good parents do that for their children. Good teachers do that for their students, good pastors should do that for their parishioners, good politicians should do that for their countries. The wise men did that for Jesus; and Jesus for them! We too are called to lose ourselves in His light so that His light can shine through us and our lives. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

It is a place where I can be honest with myself without hesitation in seeking a greater out look on my life. I feel like I am more apart of our small parish community and not a number in a pew. A Sunday Gospel Reflections December 30, 2018 Feast of the Holy Family Luke 2:41-52 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel, Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus is not with them in the caravan returning home from celebrating the Passover in Jerusalem. After searching for three days, they find him back in the Temple. Mary questions why Jesus stayed behind, but she does not fully understand Jesus response he had to be in his Father s house. Reflection for Parents Parents who have lost track of a child, even for a few minutes, can understand the anxiety Mary and Joseph must have felt when they realized that Jesus was not with them. Like most children, Jesus seemed rather nonplussed about it all. While most parents strive to do their best at keeping track of their children and keeping their children safe from harm, there will be times of anxiety, confusion, and worry along the way. As a parent, pray daily for God s protection for your children and for all children of the world especially those in harm s way. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family The word holy means connected to God. Today, take a family inventory of how you are staying connected to God. Decide as a family one way you can become a more holy family by deepening your connection to God in the coming year. Perhaps you will say grace together at every meal, whether at home or in a restaurant. Maybe you will increase your donations to the parish food pantry or clothes closet. Or maybe you will take the time to pray together each day before leaving for school or work. Discussion Starters A time when I was lost and frightened was... I think our family is holy because...
