3 The Pastor s Two Cents Follow that Star! In order for us to understand the message of today s Gospel we need to remember that the star the Magi followed was not the only star in the sky! Step outside on a clear night and ask yourself how do you pick one star to follow? There are, of But which one? course, countless stars on which to focus. If the star of Bethlehem had been obvious surely others would have noticed and might have followed it as the magi did in pursuit of the wonders it signified. However, these wise travelers looked at the night sky and saw something that others didn t see. Indeed, in choosing to focus on the pinpricks of light rather than the surrounding darkness, they were already setting the tone for their journey. To focus on light rather than darkness is always, in every circumstance, an act of faith. As we enter into this new year I believe this offers us an inspiring message. I believe we are called, as followers of Christ, to see what others may not see, to hear what others may not hear, to go where others may not choose to go. Many lights beckon us to follow but only the one true light will lead us to life. For all the seekers of truth that light will set itself apart from all others. That light is the light of Christ! Rise up in splendor...your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you! May we choose to focus on the light this year, not the darkness! May Christ, the Morning Star, be the one star we choose to follow even as other stars beckon for our attention. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

5 All the difference Jesus Resurrection is the most important reality that shapes our Christian lives. It is this truth that proves that the Gospel; is real. Those of us who believe in the Resurrection live differently. We live with hope. Recent Deaths Our Condolences are extended to the family of Casey Cameron who has recently passed away. May the Lord bless him and keep him. May the Lord let His face shine upon him, and be gracious to him. Lord, look upon him kindly and give him peace. Why do Catholics bow during the Nicene Creed? When we proclaim our belief that God s Son was born of the Virgin Mary and became man, we bow out of reverence for the mystery that made our salvation possible (CCC #461). These words recall the moment when Mary became the mother of Jesus, who would, save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). 6 Grow in Prayer Our prayer life can mature and grow when we pray for intentions that are outside ourselves. For example, we can pray for the victims of war, the sick, for the people who don t believe in God, and for those in jails and prisons, whether we know them or not. Sunday Gospel Reflections January 7, The Epiphany of the Lord Matthew 2:1-12 Gospel Summary - The Magi from the East arrived in Jerusalem, asking the whereabouts of the newborn King of the Jews. Herod was troubled by this news of the birth, as was all of Jerusalem. He sent the Magi to Bethlehem to search for the child, asking that they bring the child to him so that he could do the child homage. The Magi set out and followed the star to the place where the child was. They did the child homage and offered him their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and they left for their country by a different route. Reflection for Families - This Gospel narrative is full of adventure, danger, mystery, and yes - gifts! During this Christmas season, enjoy dramatizing this Gospel as a family. Then think about how far you would travel, how far you would go to pay homage to Jesus. Would you go as far as your parish to receive the Sacraments or to spend some time in quiet prayer? Would you go as far as the soup kitchen to serve a meal to the hungry? Would you go as far as to tell someone to stop bullying a classmate or a coworker? Would you go as far as to give up a morning cup of coffee or a favorite treat in order to give to someone, in need, the gift of food or clothing or the necessities of life? How far would you go? What would you give as your gifts to the King? Bringing the Gospel into your family - The star led the Magi to the place where Jesus was. With your family, cut out several yellow construction paper stars. On each star write either a way you can find Jesus - such as read God s Word - or the name of a person who has helped you find Jesus, such as Grandma Joan. Create a mobile of your stars using coat hangers and yarn or string. Hang your stars in a place where all family members will see them.
