3 The Pastor s Two Cents Only TWO days Remain! This weekend, on the last Sunday of Advent, two days before Christmas, the church presents us with the image of Mary visiting Elizabeth, both women pregnant by God s grace, awaiting the birth of their children. The image of pregnancy is a fitting image for the season of Advent as we await the coming of our savior, at Christmas and at the end of time. As we look forward, it is also appropriate that we look back to understand what this visit between Mary and Elizabeth meant to the evangelist Luke. Many people don t realize that Mary s going up to the hill country, to a city of Judah, has a number of parallels to the language found in 2 Samuel 6. It would appear that St. Luke, in his Gospel account, is inviting the hearer to make this connection to 2 Samuel 6. In 2 Samuel, David brings the Ark of the Covenant up to the hill country of Jerusalem and he leaps for joy; just as Mary goes up to the hill country of Judah and the child in Elizabeth s womb (John the Baptist) leaps for joy in her womb. David says, How can the ark of the Lord come to me? We find similar words echoed by Elizabeth as Mary approaches her. There are also a few other similarities (Can you find them?). So why is this important? Clearly for Luke, Mary is now the NEW Ark of the Covenant, carrying in her womb the Word of God. Also remember that in the Hebrew culture, younger to older is often way the way of respect (as in our day and age). However, we are not seeing that in this case. Elizabeth is falling all over this 15-year old pregnant relative. While Elizabeth pregnancy is important, Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant is clearly the central figure. We only have TWO DAYS more to prepare our hearts to celebrate the great mystery that the evangelist, Luke recognized and Mary and Elizabeth celebrated. We are called upon by God to emulate Mary, to be vessels that hold the sacred within and bear that treasure to the world which seems to be in even greater need than ever of this treasure. As we receive the Eucharist today and prepare for the celebration of the Word made flesh may God give us, who join Elizabeth in honoring the exaltation of her lowliness, the grace to follow the example of her devotion to God s will. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

BRING FAVORITE SNACK TO PASS AND YOUR FA- VORITE GAME AND JOIN US. Questions of the week for the 4th Sunday in Advent Gospel: Luke 1:39-45 Adults: When was it hardest for you to trust in God s plan, as Mary did? What can help you at such times? Children: When is it hardest for you to obey a parent or teacher? What can help you obey with more trust? A Sunday Gospel Reflections December 23, th. Sunday in Advent Luke 3:10-18 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel reading, those in the crowd, tax collectors, and soldiers all ask John the Baptist what they should do. In each response, and according to each group s circumstance, John emphasizes keeping or taking only what is needed or prescribed. John also makes it clear to all that the Christ for whom they have been waiting is yet to come. Reflection for Parents This Gospel highlights several Christian values that are learned in the home generosity, fairness, truthfulness, and contentment with what you have. Take some time today to think about each of these values. How are your children learning these values through your example? How can you make these values more a part of your family life as Christmas nears? Bringing the Good News Into Your Family At this halfway point in Advent, choose as a family one way you can share what you have with others. Perhaps you can donate gently used coats and sweaters or new hats and mittens to a local shelter. If your parish food pantry is in need of donations, go grocery shopping and help meet the need for food. If you are a musically gifted family, plan to carol in your neighborhood or at a local care facility. Discussion Starters Something that I have more than enough of is... I can share the extra that I have with... Something that is hard for me to share is...
