The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. 3 The Pastor s Two Cents Jesus sent them out two by two... Jesus was well aware that no person is an island. As he preached and healed he invited others to follow him, eventually he would call twelve of them to share intimately in his mission; and after the resurrection he would call the eleven that remained to bring the Good News of Salvation to the whole world. In this weekend s gospel Jesus begins to send them out two by two. The mission of Christ is meant to be shared. In our day and age we see this expressed in so many ways. In the Mass alone we have a presider, lectors, servers, music ministry, ushers, greeters, sacristans, Extra Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, all working together to assist us to worship God as a congregation. Together we share in the wonderful gift of the Eucharist. Jesus once commented, my yoke is easy and my burden light. (Matthew 11:30) Webster dictionary defines a yoke as a wooden bar or frame by which two draft animals (as oxen) are joined at the heads or necks for working together. Jesus does not want us to ever think that the work of the Gospel is the work of only one individual. It is the work of all of us working together, each sharing the gift that God has given to each of us for the praise of his glory! As we share ministry, St. Teresa of Avila reminds us: Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which to look out Christ's compassion to the world. Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now. On another note, Next weekend Fr. Fredrick Mwangi Kooro will be in our parish, representing the Diocese of Nakuru, Kenya. He will be here for our Diocesan Missionary Appeal. The second collection will benefit the Diocese of Nakuru, Kenya. Please be as generous as your means allow. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

The Sunday Meals program is a soup kitchen that is manned by Hornell area church and community volunteers. Soup Kitchens have a longstanding community history in the United States, dating back to the late 1800 s. Businesses and other groups have always stepped up to support members of their own communities who need a little extra help. Without your support we would not be able to provide these services to the men, women, and children who visit our local soup kitchen. At our Sunday Meals program teams take turns preparing and serving the meals one Sunday, every 2-3 months or so. Recently, one of our OLV soup kitchen teams mentioned that they have room for new team members! Over the past several months they have lost members due to illness and other health concerns. They could use 3-4 new volunteers who are dedicated to helping feed the poor! Volunteers are also needed to help make deserts for the meals. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the team, please call Deb Brinkhus at the parish office, Do not be afraid to embrace God s gift of life. 5 Use the Bible Well There s an old saying, Bibles that are falling apart usually belong to people who aren t. Try these tips to get the most our of your reading: Choose a Catholic version. The New American Bible is read during Mass but there are other Catholic translations. Most important is have an edition you enjoy that contains all the Catholic books. (Here is a list: usccb.org/bible/approvedtranslations/index.cfm.) Use the Aids. The Bible contains customs and terms that are foreign to us. Read the introductions and footnotes for helpful explanations. Focus on Passages. The Bible will make more sense if you read the sections that are grouped together rather than sentence by sentence. Mark it up. Underline and make notes in the margins as you read to make your book more useful. Read aloud. the passages read may help them become clearer. Live it. What you read in the Bible will help you find strength to meet the challenges of life. Don t just read it. Live it. Quest Youth Group The Quest Youth Group is invited to a fun day on campus at Alfred University on Tuesday, July 17th. There will be fun activities throughout the day and a campus tour hosted by AU staff. Pizza lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Dave Prete at prete1818@yahoo.com or by July 10th. No cost to attend. What is expected of Catholics? Successful families have guidelines that help each member grow in love and virtue. Also a family, the Catholic Church recommends basic guidelines so that her children, too, can grow in love and virtue: Come home every weekend: You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on Holy days of Obligation and rest from servile labor. God wants to see us - often! Take responsibility: You shall confess your sins at least once a year. Since we are prone to sin, it s important to repair our relationship with Our Lord. Proper Nourishment: You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easer season. In the Eucharist, Jesus nourishes us with his Body and Blood - at every Mass. Make room for love: You shall observe the days of fasting an abstinence established by the Church. Fasting helps us free our hearts for God s love. Contribute to the family: You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. Whether we donate money, time or resources, our help matters (CCC # ). In these classes we will explore some of the insights St. Thérèse gave us about God and his merciful love. A Sunday Gospel Reflections July 15, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:7-13 Gospel Summary - We hear how the early Church began in today s gospel, with the disciples being sent out two by two to continue the work begun by Jesus. Jesus explained to the new missionaries that not all people would be ready to hear what they had to say, but they should not linger with those God s judgment. Community was important as Jesus established his church on earth and continues to be the essence of the Church today. Two by two, the disciples needed one another. We need one another as well. Reflection for Families - In our busy world of commitments, we often have responsibilities that reach far beyond our own families. Then, we may try to convince ourselves that we can make up the time we don t spend with one another by supplying material gifts and opportunities. While there is nothing wrong with remembering someone in a special way from time to time, we know deep down that things cannot replace the actual time we spend together as a family. Remember how much our children depend on us for a very short period of time and consider making some adjustments as needed to your lifestyle to ensure that they have plenty of quality time with you during these few precious years. Bringing the Gospel into your family - Simplicity is a key word for many families. Getting back to the basics has become a goal. Have each person think about the things he/ she does that burden or take away from other members of the family. What adjustments can you make to travel light, as Jesus disciples did, and reach out to one another and those in by your sharing the Good News of Jesus?
