3 The Pastor s Two Cents Being a Mother is a life choice A few years ago Pope Francis shared some reflections on the importance of mothers to society and to the church. On this Mother s Day, in gratitude to my own mother and all who have embraced this important vocation I share some of his thoughts. On January 7, 2015 Pope Francis lamented how mothers are often under-appreciated in their family role. Mothers, he said, are often exploited because of their availability. Not even the Christian community values them properly, despite the eminent example of the Mother of Jesus Mary s example provides an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the role of all mothers in society and the Church despite all of the symbolic glorification we give to motherhood, it is still undervalued Even though mothers are often exalted with praise and poetry, they often get very little concrete help and appreciation. Pope Francis reminded all who heard him that Mothers are indispensable to society and the church, showing the world what it means to generously give oneself for others, to respect life and to display tenderness and moral strength even in times of trouble. Pope Francis recalled his own upbringing as one of five children, and spoke of how much work and how many problems, but also how much happiness, come with motherhood. He continued, Mothers are the strongest antidote to the spread of selfish individualism. A world without mothers would be inhumane because mothers always know how to give witness -- even in the worst of times -- to tenderness, dedication and moral strength." "Being a mother does not mean just bringing a child into the world, but it is also a life choice. What does a mother choose?" he asked. "It is the choice to give life and this is great, this is beautiful. It is often the mother who passes on the deepest sense of religious practice as she plants and cultivates the seed of faith in a child by sharing prayers and devotional practices. Without mothers, not only would there be no new people of faith, but the faith would lose a good portion of its simple and profound warmth." Quoting a homily by Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero (who was shot and killed in 1980 as he celebrated Mass) Pope Francis reminds us that the late archbishop had said that giving one's life does not just mean being killed for the faith, it is also offering oneself "in that silence of daily life, bit by bit, like a mother, who, without fear, and with the simplicity of maternal martyrdom, conceives a child in her womb, brings it into the world, nurses it, raises it and lovingly cares for the child. As we celebrate Mother s Day, words cannot adequately express my gratitude and love for my mother who gave physical life to me in the pain of childbirth, put up with me in all the challenges I presented to her as I grew, and who also gave birth to my faith in Jesus. 5 How Do I Know That God Loves Me? God s love isn t earned and can t be lost. Such an amazing gift almost sounds too good to be true. So how do we know God s love is real? He sent his Son to us. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). His closest friends told us so. St. Paul said, For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39). He watches over us. Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear?...your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well (Matthew6:31-33). Ladies of Columbus May Dinner meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 15th., at 6:00pm., at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Who, then, is my neighbor? (Luke10:29) Jesus parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) challenges our idea of who is a stranger. As followers of Jesus, we know that it is not acceptable to care only for people who are like ourselves. Our faith calls us to look beyond borders and see all people as neighbors. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? (Luke 6:32). Who is a neighbor? Jesus never directed us to like everyone, but he raised love of neighbor to the level of a Commandment. And he doesn t allow us to be selective. The snarky coworker or unpleasant older person who lives next door? Both are neighbors we are asked to love. Customers who harp on the tiny mistakes we make, or relatives who love to point our flaws? Neighbors. People from around the world whose values and behavior are foreign to us? Neighbors, all. What is neighbor love? It starts by seeing those around us - truly looking past the outer appearance and learning names, personal stories, circumstances. Praying for others whether we know them personally or not - is a powerful way to love them. Neighbor love isn t blind to others sin but it requires focusing on our own first. In Jesus parable of the judgment of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25:31-46), Jesus lists the ways we can take care of those in physical need: For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matthew 25:35). These are the Corporal Works of Mercy: to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to visit the sick and imprisoned, to shelter the homeless and to bury the dead. Most importantly, it is by what they have done for the poor that Jesus Christ will recognize his chosen ones (CCC #2443). At their heart, the Corporal Works of Mercy are about being aware of others needs and responding to them. By this, we make our love for God and others visible and effective. Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (Matthew 25:40). The Adult Faith Formation page on the Our Lady of the Valley Web page is now available. Our Spiritual GPS Children understand the importance of maps. When we want to travel somewhere new, a map or GPS can show us how to get there. The 10 Commandments are our spiritual GPS - if we follow them, we will get where we want to go. Whoever humbles himself like this child, is he greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this, in my name, receives me (Matthew 18:4-5). A Sunday Gospel Reflections May 13, 2018 Seventh Sunday of Easter John 17:11b-19 Gospel Summary - As Jesus prepares to return to God, He is in the midst of a long prayer for his disciples. It is a prayer for unity even though Judas is no longer among the disciples. Jesus asks his Father to seal and strengthen the disciples as they will now be the ones to carry out the work begun by Jesus. He especially asks hat they not be influenced by the evil one. Reflection for Families - It is likely that John is making a connection between Jesus asking God to commission the disciples and the fact that the Church is being passed on from the first generation to the second. As parents (and probably as every generation of parents) we know how unsettling that can be! We worry about things like the next generation not working hard enough, not saving enough money, not valuing important things, and in general, they just don t think like we do! But isn t it amazing how life goes on and pretty well at that. We need to be clear to our children that we believe in them and have faith in God. Try for one week (or even one day) to consider each statement you make to your children or in their presence. Will they have the feeling that you are really hopeful for the future their generation will bring. Bringing the Gospel into your family - Designate a special cup as a blessing cup in your home. At a meal when the family is gathered, pour wine or grape juice into the cup. Have one adult begin by stating one thing about his or her faith that is important to pass on to the children. The adult may then take a sip of wine and pass the cup to the next person. Children may decide if they want to share something important that has been passed on to them or something they hope someday to pass on to their own children. When the cup has returned to the person starting, she/he may say these or similar words: Let this cup be a reminder to us of all that has been passed down through the years. Amen.
