3 The Pastor s Two Cents The Feast of Christ the King is the final Sunday of the the church year. So next Sunday we will begin a new liturgical year with the beginning of the Season of Advent. The real purpose of the Liturgical Calendar is not really for marking the passage of time. Its purpose is to glorify, celebrate and understand the mystery of Christ, beginning from his birth and incarnation until His suffering, death, resurrection and His ascension into heaven. Beginning a new year always offers the opportunity for reflection on all that has occurred in the past year and an opportunity to look forward to the year to come. In order to assist our parish in this time of reflection I have invited Fr. Charles Coury, from the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, to offer a mission for our parish. He will begin by presiding and preaching at all the Masses on the first Sunday of Advent, next weekend. Then he will preside at the daily Masses on Monday and Tuesday, and we will offer a Mass also on Wednesday at which he will preside. He will also be offering a time of prayer and reflection along with his talks on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for the entire parish! I hope that everyone will make time to take advantage of this opportunity to deepen your faith. You will find more information in the bulletin and posted in the church. This Parish Mission will also offer the opportunity for the Anointing of the Sick and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Mission will offer us the opportunity to recognize Jesus in those we meet. So that we may be accounted as those sheep to Jesus right at the judgment, when He will say, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me. 5 SAVE THE DATE: December 4-6, 2017 at 7:00pm. in St. Ann s Church OLV Parish Mission What better way to celebrate the Year of the Eucharist than to allow Christ to energize you and become your source and summit of life! Redemptorist, Fr. Charles Coury, will celebrate and speak at all Masses on the weekend of December 3rd. Fr. Coury s theme is Christ be My Light. Over the course of three evenings Fr. Coury will help us to energize ourselves in the Spirit of Christ with prayers, scripture, songs, and insights. Fr. Coury will explore the following areas: Dec. 4 - Monday - Our Blessed Mother within the framework of the Annunciation. Everyone is invited to bring a symbol of their devotion to the Blessed Mother which they will place on the altar for a blessing with holy water and sacred relics. Dec. 5 - Tuesday - Conversion. This evening all those in attendance will be invited to bring the names of deceased loved ones for another special blessing as a gesture of our prayers and petitions for those closest and dearest to us. The opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be offered. Dec. 6 - Wednesday - The Power of the Cross and the Healing that Pours Forth from it. All who attend will have an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Anointing (sickness is more than physical. It is also mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual and intellectual). Please join us as many evenings as you can to be inspired by our Mission leader and to receive some very special blessings. Catholic Courier to hold Coloring and Photo contest The Catholic Courier is holding a coloring contest (for children ages 3-6) and a photo contest (for children ages 7-12 & teenagers 13-18). 6 New Parish Council Members We thank Robert Dwyer, Helen Prior, John D Angelo, and David Weyand for accepting their recommendation for the Parish Council. Since four people accepted their endorsement, there is no reason to have a selection. Thanks to all who made a recommendation and all those who considered serving on the council. Please call: Isabel Nobilski or Donna Kull Hidden Treasure Jesus compared several scenarios of extraordinary good fortune to the experience of discovering the Kingdom of God. In the first scenario, a man discovers a treasure buried in a field. Jesus audience knew uncovering such a treasure would change their lives. Just so, discovering the hidden treasure of the Kingdom can give new meaning to our lives, too. In the second scenario, a merchant finds a valuable pearl. In the barter-based economy of ancient Israel, a merchant s fortune depended upon the quality and desirability of what he had to sell. A valuable pearl was well worth the painstaking search to find it. To those hungry and searching for God, Jesus assured them they would find the answers they sought in the Kingdom. Finally, Jesus compared the separation between the evil and righteous to the sifting that happens when a large catch is brought ashore. Similarly, when we put our whole life in service to our love for God, then the individual pieces fall into place around that love. Whatever is contrary to this love falls away. Why do Catholics Bless Themselves with Holy Water? The practice of blessing oneself with holy water harkens back to the washing rituals of the Old Testament Jews, who had to bathe before entering the temple. Today, when we bless ourselves with holy water, it brings to mind our own baptism. It was at our baptism that our souls were washed clean of original sin and we were officially made members of the Church. We also received the gift of faith. In blessing ourselves, we renew our baptismal promise. Attention: You must obtain permission prior to posting or placing anything in the church. Please contact the Business Office Sunday Gospel Reflections November 26, Christ the King Matthew 25:31-46 Gospel Summary - On this final Sunday of the Church year, the feast of Christ the King, we learn most definitely how our lives will be measured. They will be measured by the love we show. Whenever we offer a drink of water to the thirsty, food to the hungry, clothing to the naked, or whenever we visit the sick or imprisoned, or take in the stranger, we show our love to God. Through our actions toward the poor, vulnerable, estranged and discouraged we show our love of God. If we ignore these people, we also ignore God. Reflection for Families - It is easy to see the meaning of this gospel through our actions toward our children. Never in true thirst or hunger would we deny them. If they were sick or cold we would take care of them ourselves or see to it that someone helped us. It s taking this gospel to the next level that will help our children see the meaning of love through our example. Not only will they witness love through our loving actions toward others, but there will be many opportunities along the way to have our children share in these actions of love. Bringing the Gospel into your family - Through our parishes, schools, and communities, there are a number of opportunities for adults to demonstrate God s love, not through some sense of obligation, but from a genuine love of others. Most of these opportunities allow for the whole family to participate. For example, adults may make communion calls to someone who is homebound. Often these folks eagerly welcome the sight of a child or if that s not possible, children can make care cards to be delivered at the call. Think of one way as a family you might carry out at least one of the actions of the gospel.
