3 The Pastor s Two Cents Many people live either in the past or in the future. Very few of us live in the present moment. Those who live in the past or in the future live in a world which doesn't exist, and because it doesn't exist it has no ground on which for them to put their feet. Christian faith can be exercised only in the present moment. The present moment is real time. Even when real time turns sour or when persecution comes, or even, as in the Gospel, the end of the world begins, we can still stand confidently, our heads held high, because our faith in the Word of God is undiminished and promises safety - but only in real time. The readings from Scripture today invite us to remember some moments from the past and some moments from the future but only so that we might become more firmly grounded in the present moment. Ironically, only those firmly grounded in the comforting reality of the present moment are ready for the future, and do not fear it. The First Reading takes us back to an anguished, dark moment for the Jews when King Nebuchadnezzar was besieging Jerusalem. Their world was falling apart and their lives were on the line. The enemy was sweeping in from the north and in those days it was better not to be taken prisoner. In the midst of the chaos Jeremiah speaks an inspired word to the people of God; The days are coming, says the LORD,...when I will raise up for David a just shoot... Judah shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure. It is by remembering the loving plan of God in the midst of the troubles and catastrophes of our life in the world that we are given strength to live the painful present moments of our journey. In the Gospel today, Jesus twice admonishes believers to stand erect with heads raised...before the Son of Man, even when on earth nations will be in dismay (and) the powers of the heavens will be shaken. There will always be disasters in our lives. There have been disasters in human history and in the personal lives of individuals ever since the creation of Adam. These will continue to the end of time. Our only real security in all our troubles is in the word of God. Even in the midst of the most cataclysmic signs of the end of time which lie in the future it is the word of God which is our rock of safety...but only if we listen to it now, in this present moment. And what is Jesus advice in the midst of fear and death? PRAY!! Pray that you have the strength However, Jesus is not calling us to pray some time in the future when these things are occurring. He is calling on his followers to pray IN THE PRESENT MOMENT; NOW! So that in that future moment you may stand in confidence before the Son of Man. During this Advent Season, in this present moment, may we allow the Lord to make His ways known to us; to guide us in truth and teach us because God shows sinners the way. He guides the humble to justice, and teaches the humble his way. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

A Sunday Gospel Reflections December 9, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 3:1-6 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel, Luke places the beginning of John the Baptist s ministry within a historical context. He sets John s ministry in time by telling us who were the rulers and leaders in the region. We recognize many of the names Pontius Pilate, Herod, Annas, and Caiaphas. Into this time comes John, proclaiming a baptism of repentance and preparing the way of the Lord. Reflection for Parents Valleys, mountains, winding roads, and rough ways are all a part of the journey of life. As parents, our task is to teach our children how to apply faith in God and Christian values to help straighten out or make right what is wrong, and to help make smooth what is difficult or rough. Seeking forgiveness from one another and from God is one of the greatest ways we can do so. Take a few moments to ask God to place within you a forgiving heart so that you may teach your children to walk in the ways of forgiveness and love. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family As a family, recall the bumpiest, hilliest, most snowcovered, pothole-full, curviest, narrowest, and scariest roads you have ever driven on. Talk about things that create the bumps, hills, potholes, curves, and dangers on the road to Heaven. For example, anger creates a bump on the road to Heaven and little white lies create curves in the straight path to God. Then brainstorm things you can do this Advent to smooth and straighten the road to God, including forgiving one another and following God s Word. Discussion Starters If I could give one message about God to everyone I know, my message would be... Something that keeps getting in my way on the road to Heaven is... One thing I can do to make the way of the Lord straighter is...
