Psalm: The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading: It was not Christ who glorified himself, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you (Hebrews 5). Gospel: Immediately the blind man received his sight and followed Jesus on the way (Mark 10). Readings for the Week Monday: Eph 4:32 5:8; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 13:10-17 Tuesday: Eph 5:21-33 or 5:2a, 25-33; Ps 128:1-5; Lk 13:18-21 Wednesday: Eph 6:1-9; Ps 145:10-14; Lk 13:22-30 Thursday: Rv 7:2-4, 9-14; Ps 24:1-6; 1 Jn 3:1-3; Mt 5:1-12a Friday: Wis 3:1-9; Ps 23:1-6; Rom 5:5-11; Jn 6:37-40 Saturday: Phil 1:18b-26; Ps 42:2, 3, 5cdef; Lk 14:1, 7-11 Sunday: Dt 6:2-6; Ps 18:2-4, 47, 51; Heb 7:23-28; Mk 12:28b-34 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Priesthood Sunday; National World Youth Day (U.S.) All Saints Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day); First Friday St. Martin de Porres; Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday Scripture Reflection The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Our Mission St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish exists to form and send forth a community of disciples of Jesus Christ who witness by joyfully living the Gospel. A bus has been rented for the event, which will begin and end at St. Catherine. The $50 cost includes food, transportation, and all activities. For questions, contact Mary Bielski, mary@scschurch.com. Votive Candles in Church The votive candle stands that were located in the narthex have been relocated into the church in front of the St. Catherine of Siena statue and the Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos statue. Those lighting candles may place their offering in the money boxes at each candle stand, rather than using the small brown envelopes and placing the candle money in the Poor Box as in the past. The candle stands were moved for several reasons: to make them less available for little children to play with them in the narthex during Mass and to allow for the addition of more votive candle stands in Church. We have ordered candle stands to place in front of the statues of St. Joseph, St. Jude, St. Lucy, and St. Elizabeth. Two pews have been added in the narthex where the votive candle stands were formerly located. These pews are reserved for parents or grandparents who have stepped into the narthex with little children. Please do not sit on these pews unless you have stepped into the narthex to care for one or more small children. Thank you for your help making SCS a welcoming community, especially for parents of young children! November Flower Memorials During November, we remember loved ones who have died. If you would like to donate a potted mum in the sanctuary in honor of a loved one who died, please use the envelopes in the pews or send $10 to the parish office with the name of the person you wish to remember. The names will be printed in the bulletin. RCIA: Becoming Catholic Are you or is someone you know interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Are you or is someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is designed for adults who wish to become full members of the Catholic Church. RCIA is a process of spiritual enrichment and growth preparing unbaptized adults for Baptism and for other sacraments. It is also for candidates who have been baptized (Catholic and non-catholic) but have not received other sacraments or who wish to learn more about their Catholic faith. For more information or to sign up, contact Kurt Garcia, or kurtgarciarcia@gmail.com. St. Michael Prayer Added at the Conclusion of Mass We recently announced that we will being reciting the prayer to St. Michael after the Masses. We are doing so in response to Archbishop s Aymond s request to join him in prayer and fasting for our church and in response to Pope Francis invitation as well. We will continue until the end of the year. Pope Francis wants the faithful to unite in communion and penance, as a people of God, in asking the Holy Mother of God and St. Michael the Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always aims to divide us from God and among us. This prayer dates to the papacy of Pope Leo XIII in the 19th century. In a prophetic way, Pope Leo could sense that the Church would soon endure some troubled times. And so, Pope Leo composed this prayer and required all Catholics around to world for pray for the protection of the Church against the attacks of the enemy. The practice of offering this prayer after Mass began in 1886 and was upheld until By our devotion to St. Michael as a parish community, may the Lord guard the Church from all division and sin! The words of the prayer are on page two of the bulletin. Men of St. Joseph The St. Catherine of Siena chapter of an organization dedicated to invigorating the spiritual lives of Catholic men and, by their positive influence, the spiritual lives of their families, friends, and coworkers, meets on Wednesday mornings, 6:30-7:30 am, in the Melancon Center. 6 Fellowship Sunday 6

7 Two-Minute Testimony: René Navarre The Lord works in mysterious ways. A few years ago, my father was slowly dying from cancer. He was under hospice care, but still staying at my parents home. During those final weeks, my sisters and I would take turns staying overnight with my mother at their house. It was during my sister s sleepover when my father passed away. I received a phone call about two in the morning (which is never good) and was informed that my father had stopped breathing. My sister, Andreé, is a registered nurse, so I pretty much took what she said as right on target. Andreé asked my wife, Kim, and me to come over before the funeral home would arrive to take care of my father. When we arrived at my parents home, there was a police car and another car I didn t recognize. The police were there to complete a death report. The other car belonged to Fr. Amal, the priest from my mother s church. Notice that I said, my mother s church. My father wasn t exactly a church-going man. He was a true Catholic C.E.O. Christmas, Easter, Only. One time when he was at church, he asked me, Where are the flowers? What flowers? I asked. He replied, There are always flowers at Mass you know those red ones or the white ones I figured it out; the red ones were Christmas poinsettias and the white ones were Easter lilies. The only two times he went to Mass. Anyway, we go inside, and a policeman is completing his report and Fr. Amal is delivering the Last Rites. Not long after that, the gentlemen from the funeral home arrived and took my father to the funeral home. So, there we are, my mother, my sister, Fr. Amal, Kim and I, drinking coffee and engaging in small talk. Then Fr. Amal asks, So, René, where do you go to church? Now when I said that my father wasn t a church-going man, I could have been speaking about myself. The apple doesn t fall far from the tree. I wasn t living a rock star s life, but I wasn t living at the foot of the cross, either. Church was not a part of my life, back then. I had better things to do on Sunday, such as sleeping late, watching football, or riding bicycles. Not wanting to lie to a priest, I told him I didn t go to church. Calmly, he replied, Oh, no, you should go; get Jesus back in your life. Maybe this was the wake-up call I needed and I got thinking. Here was a man who got out of bed at two in the morning to deliver the Last Rites to someone he didn t even know. I tell you what, I ll make a deal, I replied. Since you came here in the middle of the night, I ll go back to church. And I ve been going ever since. I returned to the Catholic Church and am glad I did. Kim and I started sitting in the Adoration Chapel (at 1 am on Saturday, if anyone wants to exchange times with us) and I attend Manresa retreats. The retreats are for the prayers and the food. I even became a retreat captain. Kim is active in the parish, also. I don t think you ll be seeing Live Like René magnets on SUVs driving down Metairie Road, but I m happier with God in my life. I ve learned a few things from this. One is, the Church will always take you back. Also, prayer works. I realize God doesn t always answer my prayers as I wish, but he s listening. Now, I am convinced that the Our Lady of Prompt Succor prayer works during storm season. Saints season, not so much. Something else I learned, when choosing a Catholic school for your child, the Men s Clubs with the best fish fries have the best schools. That led us to SCS School. I m glad we got to be part of St. Catherine of Siena School. Our son, André, went to SCS from Pre-K through 7 th grade. His SCS education helped get him to Jesuit and LSU. He was a Cub Scout all the way to Eagle Scout with Troop 230 at St. Catherine. We have made many good friends working fairs, beer booths, spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, and crawfish boils. The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways. I took my father s passing to get me back to church and I m better for it. If you would like to share your testimony, please contact Joni Parent Maurer in the parish office Adoration Testimony: Donna Hummel I have been an adorer at St. Catherine s since the Adoration Chapel opened. With the fast-moving pace around me it is a blessing and comforting to have a place to spend time where there is peace, quiet, and nothing around to distract me. Sometimes I go in and pray from books, but the times I just sit and listen are the best. Our Lord knows what is happening in my life and guides me in the right direction. It may not always be where I want to go, but in the long run is the right place for me. This is also a time I can thank Our Lord for all the blessings he has given me and to pray for the special intentions of other friends. In going to the chapel I have found my life to be calmer and I m more patient. I know He loves me unconditionally and is always with me to help me! I look forward to going to the Chapel and I invite you to the Chapel to understand what I m saying. I get more out of it than I put into it. I would not give it up for anything else this is my special place. New Orleans Seminarian Cards Available Prayer cards with names and photos of the Archdiocese of New Orleans 42 seminarians are available in the parish office. The archdiocesan Prayer for Vocations also is printed on the card. Please consider obtaining a copy of the card and, as an individual or with your family, pray and offer sacrifices for our seminarians. Writing a note indicating that a seminarian has been lifted up in prayer, sending a card from the adoration chapel informing him that you have offered one or more hours of adoration, or inquiring whether there is anything you or your family can do in support a particular seminarian, can be invaluable! Pope St. John Paul II encouraged all who follow Christ to cultivate what he called an authentic culture of vocation ( To learn more about vocations in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, visit nolapriest.com or nolacatholic.org/vocation-office. 7
