Simon and Jude Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection How many times have we read or heard about someone who s gotten into trouble maybe even fired from a job because of a brush with the law? While our Christian minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, I m glad I would never do anything like that. And perhaps we wouldn t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God s eyes? Today s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. 3 Parish News Thank You to All for Another Memorable Fair! Thank you to Jaime Thomas and Nicole Surcouf for chairing the 2016 Fair! Thank you for your leadership, hard work, and dedication! You did a great job! We are grateful for the many hours you spent planning for fair over the past year! Thank you also to the MANY volunteers who set up the fair, worked the booths, and took down the fair. It would not have been possible without you! We appreciate your support. Flood Relief: Help Needed St. Catherine of Siena adopted the Hunt family after the recent flooding in Baton Rouge. We are collecting money to pay for new cabinets, flooring, painting, etc., that are needed to restore their home. Aside from the structure of the house being damaged, most of the contents were destroyed. We created an online registry at Bed Bath & Beyond for the needed household items (sheets, towels, etc.). Please consider going to the Bed Bath & Beyond site, searching for Richard and Melissa Hunt in Louisiana, and buying one or more of the items on the registry. As recipients of the help and generosity of so many people after Katrina, we have the opportunity to do likewise. KC Quarterly Communion October 23 Join the Knights of Columbus for their Quarterly Communion at the Sunday, 9:00 am Mass. Parishioners are invited to join the Knights in praying the Rosary before Mass, at 8:30 am. Everyone is invited to enjoy doughnuts, coffee, and kids drinks in the Melancon Center after Mass. St. Catherine of Siena Knights of Columbus Council #12686 is a local chapter of the international organization of Catholic men who wish to exhibit and live their faith through service to the parish and larger community. The Knights of Columbus was founded on the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. The Chapter meets on the third Monday of each month, at 7 p.m., in the Melancon Center. On Catechetical Sunday, our parish and school teachers were treated to a wonderful lunch catered by Albert and Erin Nicaud in the Barrett Complex. We are so grateful to Albert and Erin for their generous service to our parish. General Collection Poor Box Total Collection October 15 16, 2016 $12, $ $12, Thank you for financially supporting the mission of St. Catherine Parish. We appreciate your generosity. 5% of the weekly collection is used for missionary outreach. Jambalaya Dinner Tickets for Sale The Knights of Columbus Council will be serving to go Jambalaya Dinners on Sunday, November 6, 10 am to 12:15 pm, in the main parking lot. Dinner boxes include jambalaya, KC salad, and bread pudding and sell for $9 each. Presale tickets are being sold by the Knights this weekend and will ensure that a tasty dinner is reserved for you. Altar Society Raffle Tickets: October Next weekend, October 29 and 30, members of the Rosary Altar Society will be selling raffle tickets after all Masses. The proceeds will go toward the purchase of material and the production of Lenten covers for the crucifix, statues, icons, and pictures in the church. St. Catherine of Siena is among several entities whose members recite the rosary for broadcast live on AM station WVOG. St. Catherine of Siena s next radio rosary date is December 7. Recycling Training: November 9 and 28 In case you haven t heard, St. Catherine will begin recycling in the new year. Please join us as we hear from Diane of Waste Connections, who will conduct recycling training on November 9 and November 28, at 7 pm in the Melancon Center. This meeting is open to all. 8 Around the Archdiocese Second Collection: World Mission Sunday In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness of mercy. Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous sifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious, and lay leders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through you gift in today s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith! 40 Days for Life Continues until November 6 If you missed St. Catherine of Siena s Oct. 18 assigned date and time for prayerful witness in front of Planned Parenthood s facility at 4636 S. Claiborne, or desire to take part again, please note that this international campaign continues through November 6. Participants are required to read, sign, date, and adhere to the 40 Days for Live NOLA Statement of Peace. Second Session of Annulment Writing Workshop Slated for November 5 Anyone interested in taking part in the annulment writing workshop being held at Our Lady of Divine Providence, Metairie, but who missed the October 29 session, is welcome to attend the sessions scheduled for November 5 and 12. The workshop is for those seeking an annulment in the Catholic Church or responding to annulment proceedings. Hope, Healing for Parents: November This retreat will be led by Dr. Carol Razza and will offer love, support, and empowerment to parents, who today are wounded by family, physical, spiritual, and financial problems, along with other contemporary circumstances seemingly more so than in times past.
