Cosmas and Damian St. Vincent de Paul St. Lawrence Ruiz and Companions; St. Wenceslaus Ss. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael Let s not be too hasty in defining who is the wicked one and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don t like? Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! 6 Best Practices for Families Mike and Dottie Ellis: 18 Years of Marriage; Eight Children We are a family of 10 with eight children ranging from 16 years old to 18 months. Trying to keep everyone in the family connected is a daunting and difficult task, especially as the kids get older, become more independent, and become more socially active oh, and don't get us started on Fortnite. We have tried many plans and organizational methods over the years to try to keep it all together with little success or satisfaction. But, there have been a few methods that we have incorporated that have helped us tremendously as our family has grown and that we still use to this day...and probably could not live without at this point. The first task we tackled was trying to keep everyone's schedule correct and accurate while ensuring that we had time to spend together as a family during the week. To make this happen, we turned to our digital overlords at Google. We figured they already knew more about us than we knew about ourselves anyway, so why not leverage their expertise? Google Calendar has been a blessing given how easy it is to set up and that it can be shared across multiple devices and platforms. We assigned a separate calendar and unique color to each family member and shared them with everyone. We also created a few general calendars that were not specific to any person but contained general events that we wanted all to know, such as holidays, birthdays, family events, parades, Saints games, etc. This has really kept everyone on the same page. It has allowed for family members to assist each other and attend more events together since it is all clearly spelled out each week. The second task we tackled was trying to find time in everyone's schedule to spend time as a family. The solution we came to turned out to be the simplest of them all we just mandated that all dinners would be family dinners seated around the dining room table each night, period. Dinner time each night changes day to day based on schedules, but we make sure that everyone is together for dinner every night. We do not allow dinner to be served until everyone is seated, and we have prayed together. We actually started this tradition pretty early on, so it has become habit, and everyone knows to plan around it each day when making their schedules. This gives us invaluable time together to talk with one another, stay connected with how everyone is doing, and just enjoy being a family fart jokes and all. The third task we tackled was trying to ensure each kid received proper attention and quality time, so we incorporated "Kid of the Week" (KOTW). Each week, one of the kids becomes KOTW based on a rotation we randomly chose. The KOTW helps plan the dinner menu, gets to choose his or her seat in the family van (more of a perk than you could possibly imagine), gets a date night with Mom and Dad, chooses our Fun Friday activity, and leads prayer at meals. The kids look forward to their week and also respect the choices made by the KOTW which helps ease some other issues we were having with a large family. Throughout the many attempts to organize this motley crew, these three methods have stood the test of time. The 10 of us stay connected and regularly spend quality time together despite the myriad of interferences we have Fortnite and all. Parish News Kilroy Family to Welcome their Third Child Parish School of Religion It is with great joy and excitement that we announce that SCS School principal Kimberlie Kilroy, husband, Sean, and children Michael and Savannah are expecting an addition to their family at the end of April. Mrs. Kilroy s maternity leave is projected to begin on April 26. Mrs. Kilroy will return to SCS on August 5 to open another exciting and successful school year with our SCS school community! 7 Best Practices for Families Brian and Leigh Diley: 14 Years of Marriage; Two Children 1) We are open and express our feelings towards each other ("I love you, I'm proud of you ); 2) Taking turns sharing three things that we are thankful for each day; 3) Family hugs if someone yells family hug" then we are all obliged to do a group hug including the dog; 4) Making efforts to spend time with our ex tended family; 5) Frequent family movie nights. Ashley and Derek Cook: 22 Years of Marriage; Four Children Family dinners have always been extremely important to me. Growing up it was just part of the routine, but purposeful. It's something I came to cherish dearly. Spending time with family nightly over dinner provides a relaxed atmosphere where we can pray together, talk, and reconnect. Although it s challenging some nights with everyone s schedules, nightly family dinners are a priority in our home. With school comes a lot of homework; it's the way it is. We try to prepare ahead. Unfortunately, because of this, our kids do homework over the weekend. When I say homework, I'm referring to studying. They review all of their notes and head to school on Mondays well prepared for the week ahead. If we were to wait till during the week our already hectic schedule would be way too much to handle. It s all about preparation, working ahead, and using time wisely. Good life lessons. Brian and Cynthia Dehart: 21 Years of Marriage; Three Children We find that eating together nightly at the dinner table is one way we stay connected. During the blessing, we hold hands and someone says a spontaneous prayer of thanks, praise, or an intercession for someone. We try to keep Sundays as our family day where we do some activity together. Finally, we try to attend Mass together as a family. We really stress to our children the importance of togetherness and family time because your family is a huge source of strength. Sheila and Emile Casadaban 35 Years of Marriage; Five Children I'm afraid we are not the model family considering our five children, their spouses, and our first grandchild live all over the country, except for Tori and her husband, Nick, who live around the corner from us...soon Sr. Fleur will move to Italy to help out at the formation monastery in Tuscania. We try to family Skype once a month, when Sr. Fleur can communicate with us. She (in Brooklyn, New York) and Mother Bon Secours (in Santa Clara, California) figure out the best time for them, then we all adjust our schedules accordingly, across four time zones. If it's mealtime for one of us, we all pray grace together, but that is about the extent of it. In the past, if at least one of our religious daughters was at home, we would pray the Divine Office, the Rosary, Grace Before Meals, and the Angelus, together pretty regularly, but since January 1 of 2016 when Sr. Fleur entered the monastery we have not been all together. Of course many of us pray these prayers individually or as couples, and the sisters with their respective religious communities. As empty nesters, Emile and I attend daily Mass, walk in the neighborhood daily praying the Rosary, Angelus, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. We also pray individual morning and evening prayers. Michelle and Scott Macicek: 15 Years of Marriage; Five Children We pray together before meals even when we are at a restaurant. We pray with the younger two girls before bed. The older girls pray on their own. Scott gives each of the kids a blessing on their forehead every night before bed. They have grown to love this tradition and even when they sleep out they send a text or call to get a blessing before they go to bed. He makes the sign of the cross on their forehead and says, May the Lord bless you and keep you, may His angels watch over you, and may the peace of Christ guard you while you sleep and be with you always. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. We recently bought daily devotion books for Reagan and Ramsey that they do before bed. One of the questions asks, where did you see God today? It is been so sweet to see what they come up with and an awesome way to lead into our nightly prayer. Another thing that we actually are getting ready to start is to get a few families together once a month to pray the Rosary. We have books for the kids to follow along with rosaries for the kids. We usually play a little music and each family takes a turn saying a decade and we say intentions after each decade. It really is a beautiful way to build community and to pray the Rosary. Peggy and Bill Hall: 62 Years of Marriage; Four Children The secret to 62 years of marriage is forgiveness. Forgiveness for the little things. Sharp words that were spoken or said in anger. If the family member holds on to that hurt and does not forgive, anger builds and begins to place a wedge between the spouses. Not only is it important for the party who was wronged to forgive, it also is important for the other party to be forgiving it affects the pleasantness of the marriage. There was an instance when I was holding out on forgiveness for one of my kids, and I realized that at Mass I would have to pray the Our Father and couldn t honestly say that prayer because I could not say the line, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespasses against us. For those more serious instances, such as when something is withheld from you, or one spouse takes an action or makes a decision without discussing it with the other, forgiveness is necessary. Let s not forget some of the most important words in marriage as well: I am sorry. Kendall and Jimmy Connick: 12 Years of Marriage; One Child Our family stays spiritually connected through the Eucharist and daily prayer before meals. As Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, we strive to demonstrate to our child the importance of participating in our faith in the community. Actively participating in the growth and knowledge of our faith will hopefully instill a love for the Church in our own child. Bob and +Aggie Borne 61 Years of Marriage; Six Children We tried to keep them close to the Church and close to Jesus. Tried to lead them by our example. Tried to show them our love. Tried to show them respect. Tried hard to never go to bed angry at each other. We tried to keep foul language or generalities such as, You always do or You always say out of our vocabulary, especially when arguing. Prayer as a family was so important although we couldn t do it every day. We would try to say the rosary and grace before meals. 7
