Simon and Jude Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. RAS Raffle Ticket Sales: October 28 and 29 The Rosary Altar Society will be selling tickets after all Masses on October 28 and 29. All proceeds will go toward purchasing red vestments for our priests and deacons. A $2 donation for each ticket is appreciated. Thank you for your support! All Souls Day Memorial Mass: November 2 There will be a Memorial Mass to commemorate the Faithful Departed on Thursday, November 2, 7 pm, in the church. Parishioners who died this past year will be remembered. All are invited and encouraged to pray with the family and friends of the deceased. Favret Memorial Golf Tournament: November 3 The Charley Favret Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, November 3, at New Bayou Oaks City Park Golf Course, 1051 Filmore Avenue, New Orleans. Registration/lunch is at 11:30 am; start time is 12:30 pm. The format will be four-player scramble with a shotgun start. Proceeds benefit St. Catherine of Siena. Supper and Substance: November 18 A special evening designed for couples to be strengthened and enriched in their marriage is set for Saturday, November 18, 6:30-10:30 pm, in the Barrett Complex. Supper and Substance, as the event is called, consists of a delicious meal "Supper an inspiring presentation Substance and the opportunity for couples to renew their wedding vows. Two hours of dancing, with music provided by DJ Tim, will complete the evening. Attire is dressy casual. The cost is $40 per couple with registration before November 13; $50 after November 13. Joni Parent has joined the parish staff as Director of Evangelization, and Miranda Powell, as Office Assistant. A parishioner for more than 25 years, Joni Parent has worn many hats: she retired from the practice of law to be a full-time mom (and SCS volunteer) while children Sarah, Bradley, and Patrick were SCS students. She later completed a graduate program in counseling and worked for Catholic Counseling Services. Joni looks forward to promoting the efforts of our parish to become centered on Christ, ablaze with love. In addition to being a busy mom to Bruin, Nahia, and Jacob, Miranda Powell is an active member of the SCS School Co-op, vice-president of the Rosary Altar Society, and serves on the hospitality and welcoming ministry committee. Miranda will be providing administrative support for religious education, youth ministry, and evangelization efforts. November Flower Memorials During the month of November, we remember loved ones who have died. If you would like to donate a potted mum in the sanctuary in honor of a loved one who died, please send $20 to the parish office with the name of the person you wish to remember. 8 Archdiocesan News World Mission Sunday: October 22 Today, we celebrate World Mission Sunday! We are called to offer our prayers and generous financial support, through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, for the worldwide mission of Christ. We are asked to reach out to the peripheries, people in remote villages, towns, and cities using the witness and work of missionaries and local priests. Please keep all missionaries in your daily prayers. Ecumenical Prayer Service: October 23 An ecumenical prayer service with Archbishop Gregory Aymond and Lutheran Bishop Michael Reinhard presiding will take place on Monday, October 23, 7 pm, at St. Louis Cathedral, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans. The event is sponsored by the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Archdiocese of New Orleans Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. Day of Prayer for Women: October 24 A Day of Prayer, Mary, the Mother of God, will take place on Tuesday, October 24, at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center, 5500 St. Mary St., Metairie. Presenter Br. Steve Synan will draw from the traditions and teachings of the Church, including some that are specific to the religious life of a Marist Brother. In reflecting on Mission Sunday, Pope Francis said, World Mission Day gathers us around the person of Jesus, the very first and greatest evangelizer, who consistently sends us forth to proclaim the Gospel of the love of God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit...The church is missionary by nature; otherwise, she would no longer be the church of Christ. By our Baptism, we are not only claimed as the daughter or son of God, but are sent to share our faith with others. We are called to evangelize! We are to share our faith, not only with those we see daily, but with our sisters and brothers in mission countries whom we have never met. Especially on Mission Sunday, we are called to pray for the missionaries throughout the world, to pray for those who serve and to offer a gift in the second collection to support the missionary work of the church. Very often we do not remember those who have never heard of Christ or missionaries who do not have the resources they need to minister to their people. It is truly a universal effort for the entire church. It is a sacred moment to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the world. Through the work of these churches and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love, mercy and hope. I invite all of us to see World Mission Sunday, which is celebrated on October 22, as a special moment of encounter with Christ s mission throughout the world. Please remember the priests, religious and lay missionaries who, day in and day out, witness to the Gospel and serve the poor.
