The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God s presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. SVdP Food Collection: January 7 and 8 Please bring non-perishable food items to church this weekend and place them in the collection bins in the narthex of the church. Though donations of all types of nonperishable foods are greatly appreciated and are distributed each week to those in need, high protein foods such as peanut butter and canned meat can be particularly helpful to those experiencing economic distress. KC Quarterly Communion: Sunday, January 8 The Knights of Columbus Quarterly Communion will take place on Sunday, January 8, at the 9 am Mass. Parishioners are invited to join the Knights in praying the rosary starting at 8:30 am, and in the Melancon Center after Mass for coffee, doughnuts, and children s drinks. CYO Youth Mass: Sunday, January 8 Junior High and High School Students are invited to attend our monthly Youth Mass, Sunday, January 8, 5:30 pm, in the church. After Mass, all high school students are invited to the Youth Room for youth night and dinner from 6:30-8 pm. We will be taking part in the parish effort to feed the hungry by bringing one or more non-perishable food items to place in the St. Vincent de Paul Society collection bins located in the narthex of the church. RAS Quarterly Meeting: Sunday, January 15 The Rosary Altar Society invites all men and women to their quarterly meeting on Sunday, January 15, following the 9 am Mass. We will pray the rosary in church at 8:30 a.m. The meeting is an opportunity to see what we are all about and to meet new friends. Coffee and sweets will be served. We look forward to seeing you! New Lord, Teach Me to Pray Classes Forming Lord, Teach Me to Pray is a three-part Ignatian prayer series developed to meet the desire for spiritual growth in prayer. Part 1, Praying Christian Virtues, helps participants to deepen their prayer life and discover what to do for dryness and obstacles in prayer. The Praying Christian Virtues portion of Lord, Teach Me to Pray also introduces the different methods of Ignatian prayer, meditation, contemplation, and Consciousness Examen. Small groups meet with trained facilitators for one to two hours a week for 12 weeks to pray and faith share. Men s and women s groups meet separately. A women s Part 1 group will begin meeting on Monday, January 23, 6:30 pm, near the reconciliation rooms in the church. Those making this commitment agree to attend the Mass for which they signed up to accept the cross after the homily (a booklet with suggested prayers is provided), and to return the vocation cross and booklet to the church office on the Wednesday before the second Sunday of the following month. 8 Around the Archdiocese Seelos Birthday Healing Mass: January 8 A Healing Mass commemorating the 198th birthday of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, CSsR, will take place on Sunday, January 8, 1 pm, at St. Mary s Assumption Church, 919 Josephine Street in New Orleans. Seelos shrine director Fr. Harry Grile, CSsR, will be celebrant and homilist. Confessions will be heard before Mass, and the Sacrament of Anointing will be available for those in need. Those desiring to venerate Blessed Seelos relic missionary crucifix will have the opportunity to do so, and one-on-one intercessory prayer stations located around the church and in the shrine will be available starting at 11:45 am. Visit for more information. 202nd Ursuline Thanksgiving Mass: January 8 Join the Ursuline Sisters in celebrating their 202nd annual Mass of Thanksgiving, Sunday, January 8, 4 pm, at the National Votive Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, 2701 State Street, New Orleans. There will be no 9:30 am Mass at the Shrine on January 8. Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond, DD, Archbishop of New Orleans, will preside at the Mass. Fr. Edwin Gros, SJ, will be the homilist. A reception will follow. God s Special Children Mass: January 8 You are invited to attend a Very Special Mass for persons with special needs and their families and friends, on Sunday, January 8, 2 pm, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, in Metairie. Pope Francis Changes Intentions Procedure Starting in 2017 Pope Francis will present only one prepared prayer intention per month, rather than the two presented before this year. He plans, however, to add a second prayer intention each month related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief. The urgent prayer request will help mobilize prayer and action related to the urgent situation. The Apostleship of Prayer will publish these urgent prayer intentions on its website, as soon as they are received from the Vatican. The Holy Father s prepared prayer intention for January 2017 is as follows: Christian Unity: That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.
