The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul s letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us behold the Lamb of God before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we his Body through baptism, the church now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. KC Quarterly Communion: April 9 The Knights of Columbus Quarterly Communion is this Sunday, April 9, at the 9 am Mass. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest organization of Catholic men and is active in many programs to promote the faith and well-being of individuals, parishes, and communities. Adoration Chapel Schedule: April The Adoration Chapel will close for the Easter Triduum and Holiday, on Holy Thursday, April 13, at 10 am. The chapel will reopen in a procession after the 7 pm Mass of the Lord s Supper, then close at midnight for the remainder of the Triduum. The chapel will reopen on Easter Monday, April 17, at 10 am. The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed in the chapel and will be accessible via the keypad for those wishing to adore privately during this time. Please prayerfully consider becoming a committed adorer in our chapel, especially during the times when we have no adorer. You will notice that starting this weekend, the statues in our church have been covered in purple cloth. As we get closer to Holy Week, it is an ancient tradition to cover statues to focus our attention on the mysteries being celebrated on the altar and in the scriptures. We begin to really focus on those last dark hours of Jesus life when he was being overshadowed and death was imminent. The statues will be unveiled on Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling shows us that Christ s death and resurrection is his and our victory. Good Friday Nine Church Walk: April 14 Many Catholics make a special devotion on Good Friday by walking to nine churches to pray and reflect on the passion and death of Jesus. Fr. Tim will be leading SCS parishioners on a Nine Church Walk on Good Friday, April 14. We will pray the stations of the cross as we walk between 9 uptown churches. If you would like to participate, we will meet at 8:15 am at St. Stephen Church, 1025 Napoleon Ave. We will take the streetcar back to St. Stephen so please bring money for the streetcar. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Tim. Fellowship Sunday / Easter Egg Hunt: April 16 Please come to Fellowship Sunday on Easter Sunday, April 16, after the 9 am Mass. Coffee and doughnuts will be served, and there will be an Easter Egg Hunt. Youthful Elders Meeting: April 20 The Youthful Elders will meet on Thursday, April 20, 1 pm, in the Melancon Center. Fr. Ronnie and Clarion Herald Editor Peter Finney, Jr. will show pictures and talk about their trip to the Holy Land. 8 Around the Archdiocese God s Special Children Mass: April 9 The next God s Special Children and Friends Mass will be on Sunday, April 9, 2 pm, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, Metairie. There will be an Easter Egg hunt immediately after Mass. Refreshments will be served. Men s Evening of Formation: April 10 Forming Men for Christ: It s a Guy Thing is the topic for the next men s evening of formation, Monday, April 10, 6:30-8:30 pm, at St. Catherine of Siena. Very Rev. David Caron, OP, archdiocesan vicar of evangelization, will be the Mass celebrant and dinner speaker. The evening will consist of 6:30 pm Mass in the church followed by dinner in the Melancon Center. Confession will be available. Pontifical Good Friday Collection: April 14 Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, offer religious education, and preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest, and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please be generous! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit Catholic Prayer Study Series: April 19 An eight-part study on the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life will begin on Wednesday, April 19, 7 pm, in the Teen Center at St. Benilde Church, 1901 Division St., Metairie. Oremus, as the series is called, features video presentations by Fr. Mark Toups, small group discussion, and daily readings and reflections. Call for information. How to Participate in Holy Week Palm Sunday April 9 The Blessing and Distribution of Palms will take place outside the front of church at the 4:00 pm Vigil Mass on April 8 and at the 7:00 am, 9:00 am, and 5:30 pm Masses on April 9. After the palms are blessed, Father will lead the procession into church. At the 11:00 am Mass on April 9, the Blessing of the Palms will take place outside of the Barrett Complex, with a formal procession into the church. All parishioners and those visiting St. Catherine of Siena are invited to gather outside for the blessing of palms. You are invited to keep your blessed palm and prominently display it in your house as a reminder of the Lord s Passion. Holy Thursday April 13 The Mass of the Lord s Supper will take place on Thursday, April 13, at 7:00 pm in the church. During this Mass, the Washing of the Feet will take place and there will be a Eucharistic procession. NOTE: There will be NO 9:00 am Mass on April 13. Good Friday April 14 Keep activities to a minimum. Good Friday is not a day for celebrations. Save parties, Easter Egg hunts, and crawfish boils for another day. Fast: Good Friday is a day of fasting (one regular meal and two smaller meals that don t add up to a regular meal). The Church requires this for all who are 18 years and older. Younger children can be encouraged to skip snacks in between meals. Practice a family penance together. For example, turn off the television for the day. Read the story of the passion together as a family or pray a family rosary. Find a book, audio, or family movie with a Lenten theme on Formed.org. If you haven t registered yet, sign up with your address and our parish password: YJRRTG. And most important, attend the parish Stations of the Cross at noon or 6:00 pm and The Veneration of the Cross at 3:00 pm. Easter Vigil April 15 Our Easter Vigil Mass will take place on Saturday, April 15, at 8 pm. At this Mass, we will welcome 8 people into the Catholic Church. Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Church year. It is the day we remember Jesus passion and death on the cross to free Easter Sunday April 16 us from sin. As Catholics we make every effort to keep Good Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 am, 9:00 am, Friday a solemn holy day in the home as well. Here are some ways to give Good Friday the honor and respect that it deserves: and 11:00 am. NOTE: There will be NO 5:30 pm Mass. 8
