He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Paul speaks of the stewardship given to him to complete the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages past (Colossians 1:24-28). Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Mary has chosen the better part (Luke 10:38-42). Monday: Mi 6:1-4, 6-8; Ps 50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 12:38-42 Tuesday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 85:2-8; Mt 12:46-50 Wednesday: Jer 1:1, 4-10; Ps 71:1-4a, 5-6ab, 15, 17; Mt 13:1-9 Thursday: Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13; Ps 26:6-7ab, 8-11; Mt 13:10-17 Friday: Jer 3:14-17; Ps 63:2-6, 8-9; Jn 20:1-2, Saturday: Jer 7:1-11; Ps 84:3-6a, 8a, 11; Mt 13:24-30 Sunday: Gen 18:20-32; Ps 138:1-3, 6-8; Col 2:12-14; Lk 11:1-13 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Monday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Camillus de Lellis St. Apollinaris St. Lawrence of Brindisi St. Mary Magdalene St. Bridget of Sweden; Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and reverence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to their guests. In the Gospel story, Jesus friend Mary sat at his feet in order to listen to him speak. How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord s presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards? Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord s presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to him. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. 3 Parish News Black and Indian Mission Collection This Black and Indian Mission Collection has, for the last 131 years, improved the landscape of evangelization and education efforts for Native Americans, Alaskan Americans and African Americans throughout the United States. Historically, evangelization efforts by Churches and schools among African Americans, Native Americans, Eskimo and Aleut communities, have been funded by the Collection s grant awards, which are instrumental in the building of their Christian communities and sharing the joy of knowing Christ. Examples of the impact of the collection include educating African American and Native American seminarians for priestly service to our Catholic communities, establishing a new religious community for service to Native Americans in Arizona, and providing Indian and Black Catholic mission schools with catechetical materials and Bibles, and the formation of lay leadership. On July 16 17, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will take up the annual Black and Indian Mission Collection, which has a direct impact in our own archdiocese as we benefit locally from grants funded by the collection. Your generosity to this collection reflects the depths of your faith and your willingness to help our brothers and sisters in need; it is an opportunity to evangelize and further the missionary cause of bringing the Gospel to our African American and Native American family. Additional information about the work of the Black and Indian Mission Office can be found at Youthful Elder Meeting: July 21 Our next Youthful Elder Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 21st in the Melancon Center at 1:00pm. Come and join us for an indoor picnic and bingo. REMINDER: There will be no meeting in August. Additional Photo Days for Picture Directory: August & August If you did not get to have a picture taken for the photo directory please note that we are opening some additional dates. The photographers will be at St. Catherine in the Melancon Center on Friday, August 12 from 2pm until 9pm, Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, from 10am until 5pm, Friday, August 26 from 2pm until 9pm, Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, from 10am until 5pm. You can sign up online (see the link on the parish website) or call Georgine at or Debbie at Tithing Distribution Each week, 5% of the weekly collection is set aside in a tithing account to help the poor and needy. Each quarter, money from that account is distributed to different charities. Recently money was given to Catholic Charities, the Good Shepherd School, the Incarnate Word Sisters, and Hams for Fans (a nonprofit organization that feeds families at Thanksgiving). Your weekly generosity not only helps support the mission and ministry of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, but it also supports others in need. Thank you for your generosity. July 9 10, 2016 General Collection $15, Poor Box $ June Electronic Giving $17, Total Collection $33, Thank you for financially supporting the mission of St. Catherine Parish. We appreciate your generosity. 5% of the weekly collection is used for missionary outreach. Melancon Center Parking Lot Some trees in the Melancon Center parking lot will be removed because their roots are clogging the drain lines and preventing the parking lot from draining. After the trees are removed, the drain lines will be cleaned, allowing the parking lot to drain properly. New trees that are more appropriate for the location will be planted once the drainage has been fixed. Construction Update Work has begun on the new gym ceiling and the new walkway in the parking lot. For the entire month of July, the gym will be unavailable for use due to construction. Also, if anyone has items from the past years while attending SCS, we would love to display them in the school building cases by the front offices. Anything donated will be returned to you at the end of the school year. If you, your family, or anyone you know attended St. Catherine of Siena school and would be willing to share any of the above to support our collection, it would be greatly appreciated. Please RSVP by August 19, 2016 to alumni@hnjschool.org or Respect Life July Focus: Conscience Protection Our July focus is Conscience Protection. Not only are we, as a nation, celebrating our independence this month, we are also at a crossroads with respect to religious freedom and conscience protection. More and more, those who choose to protect life are finding themselves on the wrong side of an employer s wishes or even the law. Please join us in this month s spiritual work of mercy. Choose 9 days to pray the novena, Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty, which can be found on the Respect Life Office website: respectlife.arch-no.org/conscience-protection. This month our corporal work of mercy is an action that is easy and simple! It only takes a moment of your time to make a huge difference in the course of our nation. Please ask your parish to take this simple step. There is not much time for our voices to be heard. The USCCB is asking us to take action. The Conscience Protection Act of 2016 (HR 4828) is currently in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Quick action by this Committee is needed to move the bill to the floor for a vote in the coming weeks; otherwise the bill may not get a vote this year. This bill will protect health care providers from being forced to pay for or participate in abortions, and allow victims of discrimination a right of action to defend their rights in court. Please contact Rep. Steve Scalise of the House Energy & Commerce Committee to urge action on HR4828 using this simple link from Human Life Action fCampaigns%2f46692%2fRespoond%3fvvcgUT% 3dU2x9vkONU_QSrCPmJbleYQ%26vvcgRD% 3dBb48JqqUc62MbqK%26vvsbr%3d7yD5HNibeHxJwB1h7WI98A. It is imperative that we act as soon as possible...the House is on Independence Day recess until July 5, and they will recess again on July 18. Come to the Quiet 5 Day Silent Directed Retreat: July 21 July 27 This 5-day retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In addition to daily meetings with an assigned spiritual director, there will be ample time for rest, personal prayer and walks outdoors. There will be daily Mass and opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation during your retreat. The main purpose of a Silent Directed Retreat is to help you hear the voice of God and deepen your relationship with Him. Through Scripture and reflection under the daily guidance of an experienced spiritual director, you will become more aware of His presence and action in your life in an atmosphere of silence and solitude.
