Peter and Paul The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church; Blessed Virgin Mary Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. Tim Dear Parishioners, In March, Michelle Alley, our Director of Religious Education, expressed to Fr. Ronnie her desire to return to working in a school and that she would be leaving her position at SCS. Aside from being a very effective DRE for our parish over the last three years, Michelle is also a woman of deep faith. I am grateful for everything that Michelle has done to develop our faith formation program at SCS and bring it to the next level. Michelle has truly been a blessing to St. Catherine. We are going to miss Michelle after she moves on to her new ministry. While she will remain an active parishioner, her last day of working in the parish office will be July 31. I am happy to announce that a new Director of Religious Education has been hired. After carefully reviewing all of the applicants, the search committee recommended hiring Ms. Paula Atchley as our next DRE. Paula is no stranger to SCS. Her children attended St. Catherine of Siena School, and she will be moving back into the parish. Paula comes to SCS with experience both as a catechist and confirmation leader. She previously served as a DRE at St. Martha Parish for 7 years, and she is currently completing her Master s Degree in Religious Education from Loyola University. Paula begins working at SCS on Monday, June 25. She will work alongside Michelle Alley for the month of July. For more information about Paula, please see her introductory letter in the bulletin. I would like to thank the search committee: Pam Truxillo (chair), Mary Bielski, Jennifer Collins, Jimmy Gatti, Kimberlie Kilroy, Keri Murphy, and Miranda Powell. Thank you for your time and commitment to the faith formation in our parish. Please join me in praying for Michelle as she transitions to her new ministry and for Paula as she begins serving our parish. On a personal note, thank you for your prayers while I am away in my last summer of canon law studies in Washington D.C. I will be in town next weekend between class sessions. I will be celebrating the Masses on June 30 and July 1 and look forward to seeing all of you. Sincerely in the Lord, Fr. Tim Paula Atchley Introduction Greetings! I am excited to join St. Catherine of Siena Church Parish as the Director of Religious Education! I am proud to share that 2018 is the year of my 20 th anniversary of converting to Catholicism. As a convert, I truly believe religious education is the foundation for spiritual development and practices in our daily lives. Prior to joining St. Catherine, I worked at Loyola University in the Admissions Department and St. Martha Parish as the Director of Religious Education. I have two grown children, Courtney Atchley Blitch and Zachary Atchley, who I am happy to say, both attended St. Catherine and went on to graduate from Mount Carmel and Country Day. At this time, I am working towards a Master s Degree in Religious Education at the Loyola Institute of Ministry. In my spare time, I continue to study the Catholic faith, volunteer as a catechist and coordinator for sacramental programs, and arrange food and clothing collections for the homeless and needy. I humbly ask for your prayers, and please know I will pray daily for our church community. Cheerfully in Christ, Paula In Sympathy Please pray for the repose of the souls of David Bujol and Salvatore Caruso, Jr. Eternal rest grant unto David and unto Salvatore, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. 3

7 Two-Minute Testimony: Jamie Centner Many of the funerals/services I attended after the shootings were held in Catholic churches. While I had been to Catholic services before, they had never felt like home to me. Something changed after the shootings; I couldn t understand the Mass, but I felt comforted by it. I followed along as best I could and tried to learn the rituals from afar. I never wanted anyone who belonged to notice that I was fumbling through. Just being there was all I could do at the time. When I met my now husband at 16 years old, I was thrilled to learn that he was Catholic. For 18 years, when we would attend Mass it would ease my anxiety to have him by my side. I d think, maybe he knew enough to cover for the both of us. Growing up, my family never really attended church. Perhaps an occasional Easter service here or there, but we certainly never belonged anywhere. My parents would talk to us about being a Christian and I knew that I believed in Jesus. However, beyond the annual viewing of Jesus Christ Superstar, I was never introduced to Christian doctrines, though the desire was always there. As I became a teenager, I couldn t ignore my curiosity any longer. I felt God calling, but I didn t understand Him and I needed guidance. After talking with a few friends, I discovered a local youth group that was extremely welcoming and jumped right in. Leading into my Freshman year of high school, I signed up for a mission trip with the youth group. I wanted a summer away from secular life and it was exactly what I needed to hear the voice that had been calling me. My faith was stronger than ever and I felt like I had found what I had always been looking for. I confidently had all my children baptized Catholic and, in my heart, I always felt like I was Catholic, too. There was just one problem I had never even been baptized. Even after feeling called to the Church, I spent the better part of two decades just trying to blend in. I felt a great sadness in not being able to fully partake in the service, which meant that we rarely went. This embarrassment and sadness kept me from pursuing RCIA, though I often inquired. I would only share my secret with select friends and while most would listen with a nonjudgmental ear, only one really offered encouragement to enroll in RCIA to make a change. This year, I finally listened to my dear friend and made time to participate in the RCIA program. What I thought would be something that was difficult to fit into my busy week actually became my top priority; I rarely missed. My peers were supportive and encouraging, and all of those fears I had of being judged or embarrassed, melted away. It doesn t matter that I sat in the back pews for all those years, what mattered was that I had taken the steps to move forward NOW. Fast forward almost a year from that trip and my life was about to change forever. I was hiding between two rows of chairs in the school auditorium unable to comprehend what was happening around me. The teachers were telling me to run, but I couldn t move. I was too scared. You see, I was a student at Columbine High School in The janitor found a way for us to escape by using himself has a human shield, but I wasn t about to take that chance. My mind was frozen from all that I had already experienced and I couldn t process anymore. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a man appeared to me. He simply said, It s going to be ok or you re going to be ok ; I can t quite remember anymore. But the simple sentiment gave me a sudden calm and I, along with my friend, got up and ran out. No questions asked. Ever since, I have wondered if the man I remember in my mind as a man who wore a white suit, with white hair and white beard was truly an angel, or just acting as one to me that day. I often re-read my police report just to confirm that I m not making this part up; it was seemingly so ordinary at the time. I wish so badly that I had this detail engraved in my head the way that other memories from that day are. I know that I ll never find a concrete answer, but I do feel comforted in my belief that that man was an angel. My family is excited for me and I even accepted my First Communion alongside my 8-year-old son. It is an experience I will never forget. My husband supported me as my sponsor and that wonderful friend who initially encouraged me, Nicole, is now my Godmother. Finally, I have that feeling of belonging that I have been looking for since I was a child. I LOVE accepting Communion each week and my boys insist on sitting as close to the front row as they can get. I would implore anyone who has ever considered RCIA to give it a try. I am so thrilled that I did and now I can live more fully in God s presence every day. If you would like to share your testimony, please contact Joni Parent Maurer in the parish office. 7

For more information contact Norm Madere, , David Drude, , or Rick Valadie, Archbishop Aymond Releases Statement on Immigration In the last 6 weeks, nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their parents at the Texas border. Separating children from their parents often leads to long-term emotional scarring. Particularly for these families who are already in a state of anxiety and fear, the impact on both the children and the parents, will no doubt be long-lasting. As a people of faith, we must speak out for these children. The teaching of the Catholic Church is that if a person is experiencing injustice, persecution, or danger, they have a human right to find a place of security in which to begin a new life. We believe in the dignity of the human person and the preservation of the family. Nations are encouraged to create laws that will allow legal immigration in a just way. As a church we have never suggested, Open our borders all are welcome, yet countries must regulate their borders with justice and mercy. We believe immigration should be guided by laws that show charity while providing safety and security. Our current immigration laws are not guided by these principles and are not fair or just. Let us recall the principle in Jewish law and the teaching of Jesus, Do to others what you would have them do to you (Luke 6:31). We are called to pray for those unjustly treated and to be a voice for them. I invite all people of good will to join me in prayer for our sisters and brothers and to act on their behalf by contacting our government officials and urging them to stop these dehumanizing practices and make a sincere effort towards comprehensive immigration.
