Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the selfsacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Thank you for your support of last week s second collection to support Catholic Schools. The collection which raised $4, for the Champions of Catholic Education fund, which is dedicated to helping more families afford the cost of Catholic education. Blessed Candles Available This Weekend Candles that were blessed on Friday, February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord also known as Candlemas will be available at the entrances of the church after all of this weekend s Masses. The suggested donation is $3. You may ask, What are blessed candles for? They are made available to parishioners for use at home. It is customary for Catholic families to burn the candles during storms, when a loved one is undergoing surgery or is very ill, and at other troubled times. Blessed candles are often lit when a priest brings the Eucharist to the home or comes to anoint the sick. Return Old Palms: February 3-4 The Rosary Altar Society will have baskets in the narthex and near the Blessed Mother Altar this weekend for the blessed palms that you received on Palm Sunday These palms will be burned and used for Ash Wednesday SVdP Monthly Food Collection: February 3-4 Please bring nonperishable food items to church this weekend, February 3 and 4, and place them in the collection bins in the narthex of the church. Though donations of all types of nonperishable foods are greatly appreciated and are distributed each week to those in need, high protein foods such as peanut butter and canned meat can be particularly helpful to those experiencing economic distress. Fellowship Sunday: February 4 Plan to be on hand for Fellowship Sunday today, February 4, in the Melancon Center after the 9 am Mass. This is an opportunity to visit with new and long-time parishioners, and to enjoy coffee and doughnuts. Mass Schedule Change: February 4 Please note that there will be NO 5:30 pm Mass today, February 4, due to the Super Bowl. Adoration Chapel Holiday Schedule The Adoration Chapel will close for Mardi Gras on Friday, February 9, at 9 am, and will reopen on Ash Wednesday, February 14, at 10 am. Scaffolding for Reinstalling Windows: February 19 Scaffolding necessary for the installation of the refurbished stained glass windows in church will be in place from February 19 through the end of March. Adult Confirmation Classes Starting: February 21 Adult Confirmation classes will be starting Wednesday, February 21. Anyone who is past high school age and has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation is eligible for this preparation program. To sign up, call Michelle in the parish office at Men of St. Joseph: February 28 The St. Catherine of Siena chapter of an organization dedicated to invigorating the spiritual lives of Catholic men and, by their positive influence, the spiritual lives of their families, friends, and coworkers, will hold its first meeting, Wednesday, February 28, 6:30-7:30 am, in the Melancon Center. The Men of St. Joseph will gather weekly to pray, utilizing resources such as the coming Sunday s Gospel and the Magnificat morning and evening prayer, and to encourage one another to be the spiritual leaders of their families. Visit for more information about these opportunities Contribution Statements Reissued Revised 2017 contribution statements were mailed on Wednesday to all registered St. Catherine of Siena parishioners. Some funds inadvertently were omitted from those included in the printouts. Please feel free to contact the parish office if you have any questions. Heat in Church With the very cold temperatures we have been experiencing lately, several people have asked if the heater has been on in church. The heater has been turned on every time the temperatures drop, but the church has not warmed up as it normally would because the large stained glass windows are being restored. While there is a sheet of plexiglass in place of the normal windows, it does not work well keeping the cold out and the heat in. This is a temporary problem until the windows are reinstalled in the coming weeks. Aside from the windows being out causing the colder temperatures inside, our heating system is also very old; it was not replaced during the renovations in We are in the process of having it evaluated and working on improving the heating system. Shaping our Vision of Lent: February A weekend retreat for women will consider traditional Lenten themes of temptation, weakness, sin, and suffering, but will focus on increased clarity in daily living. From the saints who have walked the streets ministering to the people to the iconic buildings and monuments that grace the skylines and avenues to the cultural influences that make Catholicism truly universal, the archdiocese has brought together speakers from varying backgrounds and experiences to share their knowledge and witness their faith in a way that is uniquely Catholic New Orleans. Lectures also are scheduled on Friday, September 7, and Wednesday, October 3. Father/Son, Mother/Daughter Programs: March 2 The Father/Son Program for year old boys and the Mother/ Daughter Program for year old girls will be held in the St. Philip Neri Parish Center on March 2. The purpose of these programs is to foster open communication between parent and child and to provide sexuality information and fertility appreciation in a Christ-centered atmosphere of love. All are children of God, which makes us royalty. As daughters of our King, women are called to discipleship; our royalty is service; and the crown is heavy at times. Through prayer, storytelling, scripture, and song, participants will explore the blessings that come with the struggle of wearing the crown. The cost is $20. For more information or to register, call Susan Halligan at Annulment Writing Workshop Starting: March 24 Persons who wish to apply for an annulment, those wishing to respond to an annulment, and witnesses are invited to participate in an annulment writing workshop that will meet on Saturday, March 24, March 7, and April 14, 8:30 am-noon, at St. Clement of Rome Parish Center, 4317 Richland Avenue, Metairie. Trained lay ministers who have been through the annulment process and clergy members who work with the Tribunal will lead the meetings.
