Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Advent Wreath Preordering: November 4-5 Advent wreaths adorned with fresh greenery may be preordered this weekend. Members of the Rosary Altar Society will be on hand before and after all Masses on December 4 and 5 to take your order. The Advent wreath and four candles are shaped in a circle to symbolize the eternity of God. During each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace. An Advent book is included with a thought for each day of Advent. SVdP Monthly Food Collection: November 4-5 Please bring nonperishable food items to church this weekend, November 4-5, and place them in the collection bins in the narthex of the church. Though donations of all types of nonperishable foods are greatly appreciated and are distributed each week to those in need, high protein foods such as peanut butter and canned meat can be particularly helpful to those experiencing economic distress. Fellowship Sunday: November 5 Plan to be on hand for Fellowship Sunday, today in the Melancon Center after the 9 am Mass. This is an opportunity to visit with new and long-time parishioners, and to enjoy coffee and doughnuts. Youthful Elders Bellingrath Gardens Outing: November 8 Those 55 and over are invited to take part in a Youthful Elders Fall Adventure to Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, Alabama, on Wednesday, November 8. A luxury bus will leave from in front of church at 8:30 am and return at 4 pm, stopping at Cracker Barrel for a late Dutch treat lunch. Just $32 per person covers the day s activities. SCSWC Quarterly Meeting: November 9 All women of the parish are invited to attend the next general meeting of the St. Catherine of Siena Women s Club, on Thursday, November 9, in the Melancon Center. Social will begin at 6:30 pm with meeting to follow at 7 pm. Guest speaker Kenitha Grooms-Williams, executive director of Lantern Light Ministry, will detail the ministry s history and the services that Lantern Light provides in addition to the meals distributed at the Rebuild Center behind St. Joseph s Church. October 28-29, 2017 KC Jambalaya Boxed Lunches: November 12 Knights of Columbus Council will serve jambalaya boxed lunches in the parking lot on Sunday, November 12, from 10 am-12:15 pm. The Bible Timeline to Begin: November 16 Jeff Cavins The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation will begin on Thursday, November 16, 10-11:30 am, in the Melancon Center. The study delves deep into each period of salvation history and reveals the amazing story woven throughout all of Scripture. Using a unique colorcoded system, the study touches on the major people, places, and events of the Bible and shows how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our faith. I Give Online Cards Starting this weekend, those who contribute to St. Catherine by means of monthly credit card charge or bank draft are welcome and encouraged to pick up a green I Give Online card from one of the baskets on the tables in the narthex, and then to place the card in the collection during the offertory. Taking part in the offertory collection symbolizes our self-offering and grateful return of a portion of our material blessings to God, Source of all blessings. Prayerful and Welcoming Environment One of the goals of the pastoral plan developed based on all of the feedback from the coffees hosted by Fr. Ronnie and Fr. Tim when they arrived was to create a welcoming and prayerful environment before, during and after all weekend Masses. The committee implementing that goal has already accomplished a number of things: playing soft chant music before Mass, adding etiquette/welcoming children cards in the pews, and training Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to serve as greeters before and after Mass. Beginning the first Sunday of Advent, we will be roping off the last few pews in the two center sections of the church (the side sections will not be roped off). Reserving space in the back of church will allow anyone who arrives after Mass has begun to enter a pew without having to walk to the front of the church, and possibly distracting those already present. Please do not move the ropes or sit in the roped off area. The ushers will open these sections, if needed, after Mass starts. We appreciate your understanding and help as we seek to foster a more welcoming and prayerful environment. If you have any questions about this, please see Fr. Ronnie or Fr. Tim. 8 Archdiocesan News Exhibit Celebrates 300 Years of NOLA Catholicism The new exhibit of the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center, The Church in the Crescent: 300 Years of Catholicism in New Orleans, is open for viewing at the Old Ursuline Convent Museum, Monday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm and Saturday, 9 am-3 pm. God s Special Children Mass: November 5 The next God s Special Children Mass will take place on Sunday, November 5, 2 pm, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, Metairie. Growing Up Gracefully: November 7 Young ladies in 8th-12th grades and their mothers are invited to Growing Up Gracefully, designed to give moms the tools they need to help their daughters to become the women God created them to be fully alive and full of grace! Call Light of Soledad Movie Screening: November 10 An award-winning movie about St. Maria Soledad, foundress of the Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick, will be shown on Friday, November 10, 7 pm, at the Jefferson Performing Arts Theater, 6400 Airline Drive, Metairie. All tickets are general admission and can be purchased on the evening of the showing at $10 each. There is free, lit, secure parking for all. Retreat to Heal from Abortion: November If you or someone you love is hurting from abortion, please consider attending a retreat scheduled for Friday-Sunday, November 10-12, at the Archdiocese of New Orleans Retreat Center, 5500 St. Mary Street, Metairie. Rev. Joseph Palermo will be priest facilitator for the weekend. Individuals of all faiths are welcome. The cost is $170 (financial assistance is available). Substance Addiction Ministry: November 13 The St. Angela Merici Substance Addiction Ministry (SAM) will meet on Monday, November 13, 7-9 pm, in the parish conference room, located off of Melody Drive on the parking lot side entrance to the church. SAM exists to help those suffering from the spiritual illness of addiction and who are disconnected from self, loved ones, and God, to reconnect through education, prevention, referral, and family support. SAM provides education awareness regarding personal pain and will refer those in need to sources of help. Support, acceptance, understanding, and healing are extended to those touched by addiction. Doors of the Community Center will open at 6 pm. A panel discussion will follow the showing, at 8 pm. The Hungry Heart opens up dialogue around many issues connected to addiction and recovery and serves as a jumping off point for discussion and action steps that many communities need. The retreat will begin at 4 pm on Friday and conclude at 2 pm on Sunday. Retreat director Fr. Richard M. Sudlik, OMI, has preached in parishes and retreat centers throughout the United States. Fr. The service will consist of praise, a talk by Sr. Briege, a Eucharistic Procession, prayer for healing by Sr. Briege, and benediction. Hospice Volunteer Opportunities Heart of Hospice invites those having a heart for others to perform a valuable part of the end-of-life care that Heart of Hospice provides. Volunteer opportunities include providing relief for a caregiver, visiting with a patient and/or with his or her family, running errands or grocery shopping, and providing administrative support in the Heart of Hospice office, located in Gretna. Other ways to help are to sing songs, play music, read aloud, or walk a pet; assist with minor home repairs and yardwork, pray, help write letters and cards, and call or visit bereaved families.
