(Ezekiel 37:12-14). Psalm: With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption (Psalm 130). Second Reading: If Christ is in you, the spirit is alive even if the body is dead because of sin (Romans 8:8-11). Gospel: Lazarus, dead for four days, came out of his tomb when Jesus called his name. Many of those who had seen what had happened began to believe in Jesus (John 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]). Readings for the Week Monday: Dn 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, [41c-62]; Ps 23:1-6; Jn 8:1-11 Tuesday: Nm 21:4-9; Ps 102:2-3, 16-21; Jn 8:21-30 Wednesday: Dn 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; Dn 3:52-56; Jn 8:31-42 Thursday: Gn 17:3-9; Ps 105:4-9: Jn 8:51-59 Friday: Jer 20:10-13; Ps 18:2-7; Jn 10:31-42 Saturday: Ez 37:21-28; Jer 31:10, 11-13; Jn 11:45-56 Sunday: Mt 21:1-11 (procession); Is 50:4-7; Ps 22:8-9, 17-20, 23-24; Phil 2:6-11; Mt 26:14 27:66 [27:11-54] Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Fifth Sunday of Lent Tuesday: St. Isidore Wednesday: St. Vincent Ferrer Friday: St. John Baptist de la Salle; Day of Abstinence from Meat Saturday: First Saturday Scripture Reflection The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is the single longest story (apart from the Passion) in the Gospel of John. In it we find a summary of most of Jesus ministry. We see his very human nature as he is moved by Martha and Mary s sorrows and as he himself weeps at the tomb of Lazarus. He is the wisdom of God s Word made flesh as he explains to his followers that the death of Lazarus will serve as a sign of the glory of God. He crowns the miracles he works in John s Gospel (which began with the most human miracle of making new wine at Cana s wedding) by raising Lazarus from the dead a preview, if you will, of his own death and resurrection to come. This portrait of Jesus reminds us, as we near the end of our Lenten journey, that he is with us, knows us, understands us in every moment of our lives. He knows the joy of our human feasting, he knows the sorrow of our weeping. As we prepare to walk with him through the days of Holy Week, we are filled with faith that through Christ God s glory will be with us in every moment of our lives and with Christ in our life everlasting. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. Our Mission St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish exists to form and send forth a community of disciples of Jesus Christ who witness by joyfully living the Gospel. You will notice that starting this weekend, the statues in our church have been covered in purple cloth. As we get closer to Holy Week, it is an ancient tradition to cover statues to focus our attention on the mysteries being celebrated on the altar and in the scriptures. We begin to really focus on those last dark hours of Jesus life when he was being overshadowed and death was imminent. The statues will be unveiled on Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling shows us that Christ s death and resurrection is his and our victory. KC Quarterly Communion: April 9 The Knights of Columbus Quarterly Communion is next Sunday, April 9, at the 9 am Mass. After Mass, please drop by the Melancon Center to enjoy good company and refreshments. Good Friday Nine Church Walk: April 14 Many Catholics make a special devotion on Good Friday by walking to nine churches to pray and reflect on the passion and death of Jesus. Fr. Tim will be leading SCS parishioners on a Nine Church Walk on Good Friday, April 14. We will pray the stations of the cross as we walk between 9 uptown churches. If you would like to participate, we will meet at 8:15 am at St. Stephen Church, 1025 Napoleon Ave. We will take the streetcar back to St. Stephen so please bring money for the streetcar. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water with you. If you have any questions, contact Fr. Tim. Fellowship Sunday Date Change: April 16 Fellowship Sunday will take place, along with an Easter Egg Hunt, on Easter Sunday, April 16, after the 9 am Mass Calendar Requests are Due calendar requests for ministries and organizations were due on March 27. If you have not turned in your calendar requests, submit them to Debbie in the parish office as soon as possible in order to reserve the appropriate facilities. Homily Inserts The first of three bulletin inserts on Homilies is printed on page 6. One of the goals of the 9th General Synod was to enhance parish liturgies through more engaging preaching. While the diocese will be working with priests and deacons on this goal, these inserts provided by the Archdiocese are intended to provide the laity with helpful reflections on the nature of a homily, its role in the liturgy, and how to listen to a homily. The second and third inserts will appear on May 7 and June 4. 3

During this Mass, the Washing of the Feet will take place and there will be a Eucharistic procession. NOTE: There will be NO 9:00 am Mass on April 13. Good Friday April 14 Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Church year. It is the day we remember Jesus passion and death on the cross to free us from sin. As Catholics we make every effort to keep Good Friday a solemn holy day in the home as well. Here are some ways to give Good Friday the honor and respect that it deserves: Born to Run 5K: April 8 How to Participate in Holy Week Woman s New Life Center s annual Born To Run 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, 2017 to benefit the center s goal of providing support for women and their unborn babies. The run/walk will begin at 8:30 am at Audubon Park, Shelter #10/Newman Bandstand, and will end with a Birth Day Party for participants, featuring delicious food and live music by Neutral Snap. Visit Keep activities to a minimum. Good Friday is not a day for celebrations. Save parties, Easter Egg hunts, and crawfish boils for another day. Fast: Good Friday is a day of fasting (one regular meal and two smaller meals that don t add up to a regular meal). The Church requires this for all who are 18 years and older. Younger children can be encouraged to skip snacks in between meals. Practice a family penance together. For example, turn off the television for the day. Read the story of the passion together as a family or pray a family rosary. Find a book, audio, or family movie with a Lenten theme on Formed.org. If you haven t registered yet, sign up with your address and our parish password: YJRRTG. And most important, attend the parish Stations of the Cross at noon or 6:00 pm and The Veneration of the Cross at 3:00 pm. Easter Vigil April 15 Our Easter Vigil Mass will take place on Saturday, April 15, at 8 pm. At this Mass, we will welcome 8 people into the Catholic Church. Easter Sunday April 16 Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 am, 9:00 am, and 11:00 am. NOTE: There will be NO 5:30 pm Mass. 8
