We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! Our Mission St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish exists to form and send forth a community of disciples of Jesus Christ who witness by joyfully living the Gospel. You will notice that starting this weekend, the statues in our church have been covered in purple cloth. As we get closer to Holy Week, it is an ancient tradition to cover statues to focus our attention on the mysteries being celebrated on the altar and in the scriptures. We begin to really focus on those last dark hours of Jesus life when he was being overshadowed and death was imminent. The statues will be unveiled on Holy Saturday. This is the moment at which the fast of Lent ends and the glory of Easter begins. This unveiling shows us that Christ s death and resurrection is his and our victory. 5 Two-Minute Testimony: Bob Johnston I am Bob Johnston, a member of the congregation of St. Catherine of Siena parish. If a little over two years ago I had been asked if I were a member of a church, I would have said no. Church was not a part of my life. In order to understand how I got to St. Catherine it is important to let you know about my background. I was raised Catholic. My mother was a devout Catholic with a strong, simple faith. My father was Methodist, but did not go to church. I went to a Catholic elementary school through sixth grade. The God the nuns taught us about, I came to believe, was very stern and I remember that He probably frowned a lot. I never remember thinking that He was a loving God. After high school I was accepted to Notre Dame, and received a fine education but did not have an improvement in my spirituality. I subsequently graduated from Tulane Law School, married, had three children, had a successful legal career and retired last year after 51 years. During that time I had two successful law firms. I have a wonderful marriage and my children have provided me with six outstanding grandchildren who give us great joy. As the old saying states: my cup runneth over. Except for religion. I was an agnostic during my 20s, and was an atheist thereafter. Sometime in my early 30s I stopped going to church, and that lasted for over 40 years until late October In the early fall of that year I was diagnosed with heart problems, and a cardi- ologist told me I was headed in the direction of heart failure. I had exercised all my adult life, running a half hour five days in an average week. To be told what the doctor said was devastating. I went into a real depression, and my days were dominated by pessimism and fear. I believed I was headed toward death until a day in October that changed my life. I was driving to my office on Poydras Street and had gone over the Carrollton Avenue overpass on the service road from Metairie, and as I began merging into the right lane of the Expressway I heard a strong, clear voice in my right ear say five words: It will be all right. My mind had been focused on negative, bleak thoughts, and suddenly the most extraordinary thing had happened to me. I started to pull over to the side of the road, but then kept going, absolutely shocked at what had just happened. God had talked to me! It changed my life in that moment. I kept asking myself, why would God do that to me? I didn t deserve for that to happen. I had not believed in Him, and could not understand why someone such as I would have had the most extraordinary communication from God. It then slowly came to me with clarity why it had happened. God loved me, but I hadn t been able to see Him. God s love led me to go to church and to go to confession to Fr. Ronnie Calkins. I spent a half hour with him after calling him and telling him I had been away from the Church for over 40 years. At the end of my confession we shook hands, and I smiled and asked him: Am I back in? He laughed and told me that I was. So that s my story. Of course what God had told me turned out to be right. Later medical tests showed no progression of my heart condition. I continue to feel well, exercise regularly, and have been told I am not looking at heart failure in the foreseeable future. I regularly attend Mass at St. Catherine s and my conversion has resulted in my being able to have gratitude and appreciate the many blessings I have received in my life. I also have a feeling of a measure of peace that I never had before. I have been so blessed by what God has done for me. How to Participate in Holy Week Palm Sunday March The Blessing and Distribution of Palms will take place outside the front of church at the 4:00 pm Vigil Mass on March 24 and at the 7:00 am,, and 5:30 pm Masses on March 25. After the palms are blessed, Father will lead the procession into church. At the 11:00 am Mass on March 25, the Blessing of the Palms will take place outside of the Barrett Complex, with a formal procession into the church. All parishioners and those visiting St. Catherine of Siena are invited to gather outside for the blessing of palms. You are invited to keep your blessed palm and prominently display it in your house as a reminder of the Lord s Passion. Holy Thursday March 29 The Mass of the Lord s Supper will take place on Thursday, March 29, at 7:00 pm in the church. During this Mass, the Washing of the Feet will take place and there will be a Eucharistic procession. NOTE: There will be NO Mass on March 29. Good Friday March 30 Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Church year. It is the day we remember Jesus passion and death on the cross to free us from sin. As Catholics we make every effort to keep Good Friday a solemn holy day in the home as well. Here are some ways to give Good Friday the honor and respect that it deserves: Keep activities to a minimum. Good Friday is not a day for celebrations. Save parties, Easter Egg hunts, and crawfish boils for another day. Fast and abstinence: Good Friday is a day of fasting (one regular meal and two smaller meals that don t add up to a regular meal), which the Church requires of all who are 18 years and older, and abstinence. Younger children can be encouraged to skip snacks in between meals. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are obligatory from age 14 onward. Practice a family penance together. For example, turn off the television for the day. Read the story of the passion together as a family or pray a family rosary. Find a book, audio, or family movie with a Lenten theme on Formed.org. If you haven t registered yet, sign up with your address and our parish password: YJRRTG. And most important, attend the parish Stations of the Cross at noon or 6:00 pm and The Passion of the Lord at 3:00 pm. Holy Saturday March 31 Our Easter Vigil Mass will take place on Saturday, March 31 at 8 pm. At this Mass, we will welcome 11 people into the Catholic Church. Easter Sunday April 1 Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 am, (Church and Barrett Complex), and 11:00 am (Church and Barrett Complex). NOTE: There will be NO 5:30 pm Mass. 5

SCS Summer Camp Registration Summer camp registrations can be turned in to the SCS parish office until Friday, May 11. Registration is limited to 250 campers, and priority will be given to campers who sign up for full sessions. Single week registration will be accepted starting April 1. Visit for more information. Prayerful and Welcoming Parishioners Please consider how one might express being Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love as opportunities to practice the virtue of hospitality present themselves during Holy Week and Easter. For example, why not park a little ways away and then walk, if you are able, so that closer spots are available for others? If you plan to attend the 9 am or 11 am Mass on Easter Sunday, consider Mass in the Barrett Complex rather than the church. Those not customarily worshipping here will have the opportunity to experience the beauty of the church and feel most included. Consider moving to the center of the pew or row of chairs to facilitate others entry; this also makes the ushers job easier. Kindly inquire, May I help you? if someone appears to be looking for something or experiencing difficulty. These seemingly small acts of thoughtfulness can be profoundly impactful, particularly when extended toward guests, those who may be searching for a welcoming community, or any who have felt distanced from the church for whatever reason. Divine Mercy Novena at St. Catherine of Siena Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday, April 8. In preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, the Divine Mercy Novena will be prayed at St. Catherine of Siena each day, at the following times: March 30 Good Friday March 31 Holy Saturday April 1 Easter Sunday 10:15 am April 2 April 3 April 4 April 5 April 6 April 7 The Novena will be prayed in the church, in the Reconciliation alcove. If you are unable to pray the novena in church at these times, please consider taking a pamphlet and participating from home.
