This week s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns? Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. 5 Parish News Upcoming Sanctuary Work Prayerful and Welcoming Environment After requests from many parishioners and after consulting with the pastoral council, the liturgy committee, and the parish staff, some work will be done in the sanctuary in the coming weeks. As we seek to be a community Centered on Christ we will be moving the tabernacle to the center of the sanctuary in front of the crucifix. A new marble altar will be built and the ornate tabernacle from the adoration chapel will be used in the main church. The tabernacle in the church will be moved to the adoration chapel. Thanks to the generosity of a parishioner / contractor, all of the construction work will be donated. The only cost associated with project is the cost of purchasing the marble for the new altar. One of the goals of the pastoral plan developed based on all of the feedback from the coffees hosted by Fr. Ronnie and Fr. Tim when they arrived was to create a welcoming and prayerful environment before, during and after all weekend Masses. The committee implementing that goal has already accomplished a number of things: playing soft chant music before Mass, adding etiquette/welcoming children cards in the pews, and training Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to serve as greeters before and after Mass. If you have any questions or if you would like to contribute to the cost of the marble, please contact Fr. Tim in the parish office. The work will begin in the coming weeks, but it will take a few months for the new altar to be constructed. In the meantime, the tabernacle will be on the pedestal from the chapel. Our New Guide Book & Directory is Here! Look in your mailbox for our new Guide Book & Directory. It should be arriving in the coming week. The advertisers helped provide this service at no cost to our congregation. We encourage you to think of them in the future as your needs arise. If you are interested in advertising next year, you can get more information at amandavogt@guidebookpublishing.com. Please familiarize yourself with the ministries and organization at our church located in the front of the book. An electronic PDF version of the Guide Section of the book is available for downloading to your computer, smart phone, or tablet at your convenience. To download the Online Guide Section: visit click on our state followed by our city, and then click on the name of our congregation to download the book. Formed.org Parish Code: YJRRTG Beginning the first Sunday of Advent, we will be roping off the last few pews in the two center sections of the church (the side sections will not be roped off). Reserving space in the back of church will allow anyone who arrives after Mass has begun to enter a pew without having to walk to the front of the church, and possibly distracting those already present. Please do not move the ropes or sit in the roped off area. The ushers will open these sections, if needed, after Mass starts. We appreciate your understanding and help as we seek to foster a more welcoming and prayerful environment. If you have any questions about this, please see Fr. Ronnie or Fr. Tim. Electronic Giving Options Two options are available for those desiring the convenience of electronic giving: monthly credit card charge and monthly bank draft. Go to stcatherineparish.com and click on Resources, then Online Documents (under Downloads ), and then Electronic Giving Sign-Up Form. 6 Two-minute Testimony Scripture tells us to always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope 1 Pt 3:15. This new monthly bulletin feature provides an opportunity for us to learn from each other s faith journeys. A little over ten years ago, through a series of events that seemed completely coincidental to me at the time, I decided to go on a weekend retreat at a Catholic retreat house in New Orleans. I was a cradle Catholic and had always attended Sunday Mass, but I did so more out of habit and enculturation than piety. At the time, my late husband and I had three school-age children and life was typically hectic; the allure of a quiet weekend drew me in and I made the decision to attend the retreat. Throughout the retreat weekend, the presenting priest gave a series of talks to the smallish group of attendees; each talk was followed by a period of quiet reflection. He spoke of God s love for us individually, of how Jesus willingly and obediently endured crucifixion and death so that I might have eternal life with Him, and of the graces and gifts that are available to me through the Holy Spirit and the sacraments so that I can live in a way that is responsive to His sacrifice. All these were words that I d heard before throughout my life, but for some reason they got my attention this time. At some point during the retreat, I was invited to allow the priest to pray with me to seek a new activation in my life of the Holy Spirit s gifts that I had received in Baptism and Confirmation. The talks moved me and I made a heartfelt prayer to be more open to any gifts of the Holy Spirit that God might want me to have. I went to bed that evening feeling rather dejected, as if the talks and time for reflection had made me aware of a hole, of something missing from my life, that I had not been aware of before. Then something really unusual happened. As soon as I opened my eyes the next morning, I had a strong desire to read scripture. This had NEVER happened before; indeed, the only Bible I owned at the time was a huge, decorative, white leather-bound book that we received as a wedding present and kept safely on a shelf in a cabinet. Fortunately, the retreat house furnished a Bible in each bedroom. Recalling that the presenter of the retreat had mentioned the Gospel of Mark as a good starting place to read scripture, I read that short book. It was Sunday and I eagerly joined my family for Mass and returned home. As the day proceeded, I became aware of an evolving change within myself; I lack the words to adequately describe it. I felt as if love were growing within me and filling me to capacity. I suddenly understood, in a way I never had, the things that I d heard through so many years of Catholic education and Mass attendance. I knew, in the same way that I know my name, that Jesus loved me and died for me and left me His Spirit to guide me in my life. Rather than just knowing about Jesus, I knew Jesus. And that changed everything. The most immediate identifiable differences were a hunger for Scripture and a new, deep appreciation for my Catholic faith, Mass, and the sacraments. Over time, as I indulged my desire to learn more about the spiritual life, began a routine of daily prayer with scripture, and frequented the sacraments, I noticed more subtle changes. I began to recognize God s presence in my life and to see things differently. My growing understanding of my own sinfulness began to make me less judgmental and critical and more humble, forgiving and compassionate. And all of that paved the way for an interior peace and joy. God certainly knew what He was doing when He brought me to that first encounter with Jesus and gave me the desire and grace to persevere to know Him more. Several years after that initial retreat weekend, I experienced a season of trial and loss in my life. Even while my boat was tossed in stormy seas, I knew that Jesus was with me in the boat even if it sometimes seemed that He was sleeping. I cannot imagine what my life would be like right now if I did not have a relationship with Him that gives me this confidence. I am forever grateful to God that he sort of nagged me into attending that retreat years ago. My only regret is that I didn t accept His invitation sooner! Joni Parent recently joined the parish staff as Director of Evangelization 6
