Certainly the idea of getting by with a little help from God goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend s scriptures. No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. 3 Parish News Flood Relief: Help Needed Youthful Elder News SCS is still helping restore a flooded family s home. Please consider either making a monetary donation to cover the cost of installing cabinets and doors or buy one of the needed appliances. Our goal is $25,000 and we are just over $15,000. Another way to support them is help replace household items such as sheets, towels, etc. A gift registry has been set up with New Mom In Home Holy Communion Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You can search for it online or in the store under the name Melissa Hunt. Introducing Racial Sobriety Workshop: October 18 There will be a workshop Introducing Racial Sobriety in the Melancon Center Main Room on Tuesday, October 18 from 6:00 pm until 9:00pm. Practicing Merciful Communication in Our Digital Culture: October 19 Presented by Dr. Daniella Zsupan-Jerome, Wednesday, October 19 th, 7:00pm at St. Catherine of Siena Melancon Center (Wine and cheese will be served). Daniella Zsupan-Jerome, Ph.D., is assistant professor of liturgy, catechesis, and evangelization. She holds a bachelor s degree in theology from the University of Notre Dame, a master s degree in liturgy from St. John s University in Collegeville, a master s degree in religion and the arts from Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in theology and education from Boston College. Her research focuses on media and ministry, especially digital media and its potential for faith formation. She is a consultant for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Communication and author of Connected Toward Communion: The Church and Social Communication in the Digital Age (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2014.) She has also published a number of practical and devotional resources, including Liturgy Training Publication s Daily Prayer 2013, Arts and Faith Advent and Lent from Loyola Press, and regularly contributes to Liturgical Press Give Us This Day series. Knights of Columbus Quarterly Communion: October 23 Join the Knights of Columbus for their Quarterly Communion at the 9:00 am mass next Sunday, October 16. Parishioners are invited to join the Knights in a Rosary before mass at 8:30 am. Everyone is invited to enjoy doughnuts, coffee, and kids drinks after mass in the Melancon C enter. Rosary Altar Society News On October 22, we will be doing our fall cleaning of Our Lord s Home from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Someone will be in church during this time to let you know where you are needed. You can come and go between these times. We will have a light lunch and drinks. Please bring a friend with you! The weekend of October 29 & 30 we will be selling raffle tickets after all masses. The proceeds will go towards the material used to cover the crucifix, statues, icons and pictures in church during Lent and the making of each. World Mission Sunday: October 23 Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Its theme this year is Mercy Changes the World. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve some of the poorest of the poor. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. Annulment Writing Workshop: October 29, November 5 and November 12 The Archdiocese of New Orleans will offer a writing workshop for persons seeking an annulment in the Catholic Church or for persons responding to an annulment. The workshop will be held in Our Lady of Divine Providence Hall in Metairie. The series will be for three (3) Saturdays, October 29, November 5, and November 12, Hours are 8:30 am until Noon. Attendance is required at all sessions. The materials for the series cost $25. Wounded Warrior Retreat Offers Hope and Healing for Parents November This retreat will be led by Dr. Carol Razza and will offer love, support and empowerment to parents, who today are wounded by family, physical, spiritual, financial problems and other circumstances of the world today, seemingly more so than in times past. The retreat will take place at the Center of Jesus the Lord at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 1307 Louisiana Avenue, NOLA. It will begin on Saturday, November 12 at 8:30am with Mass and conclude for that day at 6pm and will resume on Sunday, November 13 at 8:30am until 10:30am, followed by Mass.
