Because God gets lonely for his people was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don t turn to God for saving help until we re in a bind. Peter s role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter s faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying Lord, save me! is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God s hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Our Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Sign Up to Receive Monthly Vocation Cross On the second Sunday of the month at all Masses, a vocation cross is given to a family or individual who makes a commitment to pray for vocations for a month. Those making this commitment agree to attend the Mass for which they signed up to accept the cross after the homily (a booklet with suggested prayers is provided), and to return the vocation cross and booklet to the church office on the Wednesday before the second Sunday of the following month. 8 Around the Archdiocese Period of Prayer to End Violence: August 22 All are invited to spend five minutes in prayer on Tuesday, August 22, from 12:30-12:35 pm, to mitigate the escalation of violence that tends to occur during the summer months. The church bells will ring at this time to signify our focus on the power of prayer. The time of prayer will be streaming on the Crimestoppers GNO website and Facebook page. Archbishop Gregory Aymond is a leader of the Crimestoppers Project Good Samaritan Clergy program, along with Pastor Antoine Barriere of Household of Faith Family Worship Church International. Support for the Recently Bereaved: August 25 Those who recently have lost a spouse are invited to bring family and friends and gather on Tuesday, August 25, for an evening of prayer and fellowship. A general meeting will begin at 6 pm and will be followed by Mass at 6:30 pm, offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased spouses of those in attendance. A buffet supper will follow. Fresh Fire 2017: August 26 A day-long gathering for those desiring refreshment and empowerment in the Holy Spirit will take place on Saturday, August 26, 10 am-3 pm, at St. Benilde Cafeteria, 1901 Division Street, Metairie. Speakers will include Deacon Larry and Andi Oney and Patti Mansfield. Music will be provided by Jamie Diliberto and Tongues of Fire. Registration is $30 per person and includes lunch. Youth ages may register for the special price of $10. Register online at no later than noon on Wednesday, August 23, to reserve your lunch. Annulment Writing Workshop: September 12 A writing workshop for persons seeking an annulment in the Catholic Church or responding to an annulment will be offered by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, on five consecutive Tuesdays starting September 12. The workshop is scheduled for 7:30-9:30 pm, in the Teen Center at St. Benilde parish, 1901 Division Street, Metairie. The cost for materials for the series is $25. It is a method that respects the meaning of human sexuality as God created it and thus marital love is enhanced and strengthened. Come join the class series that the Family Life Apostolate is offering in the Sympto-Thermal Method of Natural Family Planning, conducted by Gayle Rizzo and Caroline Sholl of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. For more information and to register, please call the Family Life Apostolate at Concert to Benefit Bereaved Law Enforcement Families: September 20 The 45-member American Legion Band Post 175 band (ALB175) will give a concert on Wednesday, September 20, 7:15-8:15 pm, in the Sanctuary of First English Lutheran Church, 3701 Cleary Avenue, Metairie. The cost for the performance is $10. Proceeds will benefit the Louisiana chapter of C.O.P.S., a nonprofit organization that addresses the emotional, psychological, financial, and legal problems that arise from the loss of a loved one in a law enforcement profession. The ALB175 consists of veterans and civilians of a various ages. The band performs a wide variety of music including patriotic marches, show tunes, classical selections, and contemporary pieces. The mission of the Archdiocesan Vocation Club is to promote and encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, through prayer and activities supporting seminarians and other religious; and to support priests in their sacred ministry. Youth Ministry Internship The CYO/Youth & Young Adult Ministry is seeking young adults interested in applying for an internship in youth ministry. The newly developed Emmaus Program is seeking two or three young adults (preferably out of college) to spend a year as a parish youth ministry team. In addition, they will receive spiritual direction and assistance in vocational discernment and will participate in the spiritual life of the community in which they live. Each intern will be matched with a local parish to develop a comprehensive parish youth ministry. The interns will receive a monthly stipend and room and board. The ideal candidate would be a practicing Catholic who feels called to ministry in the Church, enjoys ministering to and with young people, and is still discerning his or her vocation.
