Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church April 19, :30 a.m. Third Sunday of Easter

Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. Prelude Canonic Variations on Mit Freuden zart Raymond H. Haan (b. 1938) Gathering Hymn Easter Proclamation Remembrance of Baptism #368 With High Delight Let Us Unite Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia! ::: Gathering ::: The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. During the canticle the assembly will be sprinkled with water from the baptismal font. As you receive the droplets you may make the sign of the cross in thanksgiving for the grace and mercy of our baptism into Jesus death and resurrection. Canticle of Praise This is the Feast [2]

The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ ::: Word ::: We need to beware of perpetuating the primitive Christian tendency to blame the Jews for Jesus' death. Here critical biblical studies are a welcome gift for the preacher. The most profound Christian theological understanding is that we, our sins, were the cause of Jesus' death. But we stand with Acts 3 when it calls Jesus the servant of God, the holy and righteous one, the author of life, the messiah of God, through whose suffering we are saved. Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading Acts 3:12-19 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [3]

Psalm 4 Setting: Robert Buckley Farlee The refrain is sung by the choir and repeated by the assembly. The verses are sung by the choir. Second Reading 1 John 3:1-7 Gospel Acclamation Setting: Aaron David Miller Sung by the cantor and repeated by all. Refrain: Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; you set me free when I was in distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. You mortals, how long will you dishonor my glory: how long will you love illusions and seek after lies? Know that the Lord does wonders for the faithful; the Lord will hear me when I call. Tremble, then, and do not sin; speak to your heart in silence upon your bed. Refrain Offer the appointed sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord. Many are saying, Who will show us any good? Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord. You have put gladness in my heart, more than when grain and wine abound. In peace, I will lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me rest secure. Refrain The baptized live in the hope that through the power of the risen Christ, their lives will be marked by extraordinary countercultural love. Yet it is Christ, not the community itself, who is righteousness. Christian tradition has admired 1 John but balances its depiction of communal perfection with Pauline realism about sin. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Our hearts burn within us while you open to us the scriptures. (Luke 24:32) [4]

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The risen Christ is here among us, eating with us, and that meal is part of the proclamation of the Messiah risen from the dead on the third day and offering forgiveness to all nations. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Gospel Luke 24:36b-48 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence ~ please stand ~ #495 We Who Once Were Dead After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ #374 Day of Arising ::: Meal ::: If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. [5] Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering Offertory Hymn

Great Thanksgiving Preface and dialogue ~ please stand ~ The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation Amen [6]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God Please remain standing. ~ be seated ~ [7]

Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Anthem Stay with us Walter L. Pelz ( ) Stay with us till night has come: our praise to you this day be sung. Bless our bread, open our eyes: Jesus, be our great surprise. Walk with us, our spirits sigh: hear when our weary spirits cry. Feel again our loss, our pain: Jesus, take us to your side. Walk with us, the road will bend: make all our weeping, wailing end. Wipe our tears, forgive our fears: Jesus, lift the heavy cross. Talk with us till we behold a joyful life you will unfold: Heal our eyes to see the prize: Jesus, take us to the light. Silence Prayer Blessing Sending Hymn Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Sending Postlude Trumpet Tune in Bb Major Donald S. Wright Stay with us till day is done: no tears nor dark shall dim the sun: Cheer the heart, your grace impart. Jesus, bring eternal life. (Text: Herbert F. Brokering, ) ~ please stand ~ #391 This Joyful Eastertide Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Go in peace. Share the good news. Thanks be to God! 14 ::: What We Value ::: Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather for worship to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things we re for Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things we re against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. [14]
