LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY Lectionary 12 June 23, :30 am To Our Guests: Welcome! Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. Please fill out a yellow slip in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate. The next orientation session (to find out more or for those interested in membership): Next fall. More information on Holy Trinity, Lutheranism, worship practices, marriage and baptisms at the back of the church. To families with small children: We are glad you are here! If your child needs a break from the service, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. Nursery: open 8:15-10:30 a.m. Use the garden entrance on Addison; nursery is inside the door. Special children's bulletins are on a table at the back of the church.

ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: This Sunday's texts paint startling pictures of the horrific the demonic nature of sin. The church's repeated celebration of the holy communion counters that tragic reality in a continued showing forth of the death of Jesus until he comes. It is a dramatic declaration of how much God has done for you. Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. PRELUDE Suite No. 3 Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Bourée I Bourée II Gigue Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *GATHERING HYMN #705 God of Grace and God of Glory *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 65:1 9 The poem in Isaiah 65 put in God's mouth is chosen to complement the Luke 8 story because of its details sitting among the tombs, eating swine typify those who are unfaithful to the covenant. When are we guilty of similar uncleanliness? Yet God calls us for a blessing. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 2

PSALM 22:19-28 Setting: Carl Schalk The refrain is sung by the cantor and repeated by the assembly. Verses are sung alternating between the cantor and the assembly. Refrain: Tone: But you, O LORD, be not far away; O my help, hasten to my aid. Deliver me from the sword, my life from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth! From the horns of wild bulls you have rescued me. I will declare your name to my people; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you. Refrain You who fear the LORD, give praise! All you of Jacob's line, give glory. Stand in awe of the LORD, all you off- spring of Israel. For the LORD does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither is the LORD's face hid- den from them; but when they cry out, the LORD hears them. From you comes my praise in the great assembly; I will perform my vows in the sight of those who fear the LORD. The poor shall eat and be satisfied. Let those who seek the LORD give praise! May your hearts live forever! Refrain All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of nations shall bow before God. For dominion belongs to the LORD, who rules o- ver the nations. Refrain 3

SECOND READING: Galatians 3:23-29 Luke's writings assume that life continued under the distinctions of Jew and Greek, but several decades prior, Paul had called the Christian community to live beyond these categories. The rejection of the ethnic categories of Jew and Greek occupied Christian consciousness in the first century. Facing the distinctions of "slave and free" came in the nineteenth century, and issues relating to "male and female" continue into the twenty-first century. Much religious practice assists persons to live in their culture; yet Paul challenges his readers to be shockingly counter-cultural. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the cantor then repeated by the assembly. Carolyn Jennings Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. (Luke 8:29) Alleluia, alleluia. *GOSPEL: Luke 8:26-39 Situated in an alien worldview, in which for example demons cause insanity, talk with Jesus, and reside in an underground level of the earth, the graphic pig story may strike us as somewhat comic. Yet the narrative calls us to join the madman in acclaiming Christ as Son of God and, now that we are healed, in telling others what Jesus has done for us. The white robe of our baptism is like the clothing in which we sit at the feet of Jesus. The holy gospel according to Luke. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE 4

*HYMN OF THE DAY #650 In Christ There is No East or West *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Let us pray. Have mercy, O God. *PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. MINISTRY MOMENT Evangelical Lutheran Church in America MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING OF TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Spirit Divine Wilbur Held (b. 1914) Spirit divine, attend our prayers, and make this house thy home; Descend with all thy gracious powers, O come, great Spirit, come! Come as the fire, and purge our hearts. Like sacrificial flame; Let our whole soul an off ring be to our redeemer s name. Come as the dove, and spread thy wings, the wings of peaceful love; And let thy church on earth become blest as the church above. Spirit divine, attend our prayers; make a lost world thy home. Descend with all thy gracious powers; O come, great Spirit, come! (Text: Andrew Reed, ) *GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 5

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins 6

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Be seated. *COMMUNION *LAMB OF GOD All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. HYMN #843 Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness SILENCE Stand. *PRAYER 7

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. *BLESSING Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *SENDING HYMN #537 On Our Way Rejoicing *SENDING Go in peace, Christ is with you. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE Trumpet Tune in D Major Henry Purcell ( ) Join us for social time and refreshments following worship. 11 Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather each Sunday to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things We re For Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things We re Against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. 11
