Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ WORD Solomon s prayer is set next to Luke s narrative to indicate that, despite the firstcentury Jewish preference for social and religious distance from non-jews, Jewish tradition did proclaim that the God of Israel welcomed foreigners and answered their prayers. One such foreigner is the Roman centurion of Luke 7. We are also such foreigners. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [2]

Tone: Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless the name of the Lord; proclaim God s salvation from day to day. Declare God s glory a- mong the nations and God s wonders a- mong all peoples. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, more to be feared than all gods. Refrain As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but you, O Lord, have made the heavens. Majesty and magnificence are in your presence; power and splendor are in your sanctuary. Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord hon- or and power. Ascribe to the Lord the honor due the holy name; bring offerings and enter the courts of the Lord. Worship the Lord in the beau- ty of holiness; tremble before the Lord, all the earth. Refrain The lectionary now begins a six-week semi-continuous proclamation of Galatians, which was Martin Luther s favorite epistle. Fortuitous to read alongside of Luke, Paul stresses that God s good news is available to all people. In a church in which the clergy s salaries are paid by their congregations, Paul s comment about not seeking human approval is hard to hear. Second Reading Galatians 1:1-12 Word of God, word of life. The Copyright Company Gospel Luke 7:1-10 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Like the centurion, we come to Christ for healing. We pray for a strengthening of our faith in Jesus as the one who bears God s authority in the world. Our intercessions today include a petition for all who, like the centurion s slave, are close to death. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. 6 Memorial Acclamation The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God Please remain standing. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Communion ~ be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. 9 PARISH NOTES Our Guest Preachers Today Analyse Triolo graduated from the Wake Forest University School of Divinity in May 2015 and, most recently, completed her Lutheran Year and earned a Master of Arts in Ministry degree at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago this spring. She has been a part of the HTLoop community since August. Josh Evans has been a member of Holy Trinity since 2013 and has just completed his second year of seminary at LSTC. In July he begins a year of internship at Augustana Lutheran in Omaha Nebraska. Pr. Mueller s Sabbatical Pastor Craig Mueller is on sabbatical during April, May and June. 10 Book Group Meeting June 16 Eat, Drink, Read. The book group will be meeting for dinner on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Andies, (5253 N Clark). We won't be discussing a book this month, but please come with book suggestions for July! Grant Park Picnic and Concert June 26 Join us for the first picnic and concert of the summer! We begin with worship at 5:00 p.m. at HTLoop (637 S. Dearborn). Then we have a short walk to Millennium Park for a potluck picnic on the lawn at 6:30 p.m. (bring an appetizer, salad or desert to share; your own drink, plate and utensils). The 7:30 p.m. show features Mahler s Symphony No. 6. Rain plan: We will picnic inside Grace Place! Commemorations for the Week May 29 Jiri Tranovsky, hymnwriter, died 1637 Tranovsky is considered to be the father of Slovak hymnody as well as an important reformer of the Slavic church. He translated the Augsburg Confession (the basis of Lutheran teachings) and published a collection of Slovak hymns. May 31 - Visit of Mary to Elizabeth This festival marks the occasion when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elizabeth who was herself pregnant with John. Elizabeth pronounced Mary "blessed among women," and Mary responded with the song called the Magnificat. June 1 Justin, martyr at Rome, died around 165 Born of pagan parents, Justin was influenced by an elderly Christian in Ephesus. He became a teacher of philosophy and the Christian faith. Jailed for practicing an unauthorized religion, he refused to renounce his faith and was beheaded. June 3 The Martyrs of Uganda, died 1886 On June 3, 1886, thirty-two young men were burned to death for refusing to renounce Christianity. The confident manner in which these Christians went to their deaths contributed to a much stronger Christian presence in Uganda. June 3 John XXIII, Bishop of Rome, died 1963 When elected pope, the former Angelo Roncalli was expected to be a short-term caretaker. He showed great spirit, though, and convened the Second Vatican Council which helped bring great changes to Roman Catholic and other churches. [10]
