1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church April 9, :30 & 10:30 a.m. Sunday of the Passion / Palm Sunday Today s liturgy begins with a palm procession, commemorating Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Quickly the tone of the service changes as we meditate upon Jesus passion and death. Because this story is so central to our faith, we hear Matthew s account of the passion today and 10:30 John s version A.M. on Good LITURGY Friday. Though Jesus is obedient even unto death on the cross, he is exalted by God. We gather to remember his offering for the life of the world, and to be fed by his life-giving mercy. This holy week will culminate in the celebration of the Three Days of Jesus suffering, death, and resurrection.

3 Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING + PALMS The assembly gathers on the west lawn of the church. The following is sung three times: Processional Gospel Matthew 21:1-11 The holy gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'The Lord needs them.' And they will be sent immediately." This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." The gospel of the Lord. 4 Blessing of the Palms The Lord be with you. And also with you. The assembly raises their palm branches. We praise you, O God, for redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ. Today he entered the holy city in triumph and was proclaimed messiah and king by those who spread garments and branches along his way. Bless these branches and those who carry them. Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross, so that, joined to his death and resurrection, we enter into life with you; through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 5 Please process into the nave, moving forward to fill seats at the front first and moving to the center of the pew. REMAIN STANDING. Remember to wave your palm VIGOROUSLY during the refrain on the entrance hymn. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. 6 The presiding minister concludes the procession: Let us pray (silence is kept as a transition to the Liturgy of the Word which will focus on the passion of Christ.) Amen. Be seated WORD Introduction First Reading Isaiah 50:4-9a Second Isaiah, probably arising during the exile about 550 BCE includes four Servant Songs, in which Israel itself, described as God s servant, is chosen and anointed with God s Spirit to bring justice to the people. Isaiah 50, the third Servant Song, is spoken in the first person and emphasizes the humiliation endured by the servant, described as a teacher, whose trust is in God. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Remain seated. Christ humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name. (Phil. 2:8-9) / 6 /

7 Passion According to St. Matthew The hymn below is sung during the passion reading. Stanza four will be sung by the choir. The assembly will stand for the final portion of the reading. Stanzas five and six will be sung at the conclusion of the passion. / 7 /

9 It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ, whose suffering and death gave salvation to all. You gather your people around the tree of the cross, transforming death into life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. / 9 /

10 The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. / 10 /

11 Lamb of God Be seated. Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. / 11 /

Postlude Ride On, Ride On in Majesty Robert Hobby (b. 1962) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Eco-Palms Today in celebration of Palm Sunday, our congregation has partnered with Lutheran World Relief to use Eco-Palms a branch truly worthy of celebration. Eco-Palms are harvested in a sustainable manner. Harvesters are trained to gather only quality palm fronds in a way that allows the plant to keep growing. The palms are then brought to a community processing building, where the palms are processed and packaged for export. Eco-Palm communities process the palms themselves, capturing more of the profits, improving communities standard of living, and ensuring that the money paid for the palms benefit those who labor. As we raise our branches in celebration today, we play an important role in protecting forests, local jobs, and sustainable livelihoods in harvesting communities. It is traditional to take your blessed palm home on this day and place it behind a cross, a religious picture or another place of your choosing to remind you of your participation in this liturgy marking the beginning of our celebration of Jesus death and resurrection. / 13 /

15 ::: THE PASSION ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW ::: Each year we hear two versions of the passion of Jesus Christ read in worship. On Sunday of the Passion/Palm Sunday we hear the passion according to one of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark or Luke) this year it will be Matthew s account. On Good Friday the passion according to St. John is read. Though all four passion accounts tell the story of Jesus' passion and death, they are very different from each other and reflect the theological lens of the author and the unique situation of the community to which he is writing. Each of the gospel writers tells the passion story from their own theological perspective. Matthew writes with post-resurrection faith, addressing his gospel to a specific community (probably in Syria) in the years 70 to 80 C.E. Matthew has a particular interest in showing how Jesus fulfils prophesy and portrays Jesus as the ultimate teacher. Even in the passion account Jesus is the exalted Son of God who is in control of the events that happen to him. Jesus is the central actor, while the other characters respond as Jesus fulfills the plan of his Father. Matthew contrasts two way of perceiving Jesus: he is either the Son of God and the fulfillment of God s promise, or a sham to be mocked and killed. Thus, Matthew uses irony when a sign over Jesus head proclaims him King of the Jews, while most of the onlookers do not grasp this truth. The scenes following Jesus death are significant. A Roman centurion confesses Jesus as the Messiah. Through Jesus death God establishes something new. Jesus will later command his followers to make disciples of all nations. The tombs that open following Jesus death foreshadow his own resurrection. For Matthew, these cataclysmic events surrounding Jesus death are the high point of the passion account, and reveal the reign of God breaking in among us through this pivotal point in history. / 15 /

In addition to the short movie (about 30 minutes) watched on the big screen upstairs, there will be Easter games and prizes. No need to make dinner, because there will be lots of pizza and snacks.
