2 Prelude Lobe den Herren John Behnke (b. 1953) Praise to the Lord, the almighty Paul Manz ( ) O Antiphon O Ruler of Nations The O Antiphons have been cherished for Christians for centuries. Each antiphon uses a title for Christ taken from the Hebrew scriptures, and each one is the basis for a stanza of the beloved Advent hymn, O, come, o, come, Emmanuel. Confession / Kyrie Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. All sing: O come, O King of nations, come, O Cornerstone that binds in one: refresh the hearts that long for you; restore the broken, make us new. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. Gathering The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. This antiphon clearly addresses the savior as the king of the gentiles (Jer.10:7) and the Desired One of the nations. The Messiah is the cornerstone on whom our spiritual foundations are laid, but on whom unbelievers stumble (Matt. 21:42). This cornerstone unites and binds Jew and gentile into one, making peace between them. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. 4 Word First Reading Daniel 7:9-10, The Daniel excerpt is appointed for Christ the King because it is a significant Old Testament passage cast in monarchical imagery that since the first century Christians have applied to Christ. The Ancient One on a throne is God, and the one like a human being who stands before God is Jesus Christ, whom all peoples now serve. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 93 Setting: Robert Buckley Farlee The choir sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The choir and assembly sing alternate verses. Refrain: Tone: The LORD is king, robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength. The LORD has made the world so sure that it can- not be moved. Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; you are from everlasting. Refrain The waters have lifted up, O LORD, the waters have lifted up their voice; the waters have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, mightier is the LORD who dwells on high. 5 The Revelation excerpt is laden with language that describes Christ. He is faithful to God s call; he died as a witness to his faith; he is the first recipient of the final resurrection; he, not the Roman emperor, is King of kings; his blood freed us from sin; his authority has made the community a kingdom of priests who serve God; he rules all things; he will come again with the clouds, that is, as the presence of God, who is God past, present, and future, the A and Z of the Greek alphabet, the beginning and ending of everything. The passage indicates that no one metaphor is sufficient in our descriptions of God, important to note on this festival on which one single image is celebrated. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Second Reading Revelation 1:4b-8 Gospel Acclamation Setting: Carl F. Schalk Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David. (Mark 11:9) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Today the lectionary appoints a reading from John, since Mark s gospel does not elaborate on the metaphor of Christ as king. In this excerpt, Jesus is paradoxically a king since, rather than exert his own dominion over others, he testifies to the truth of God. The trial before Pilate is part of the way of the cross: the king will reign on the cross. The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ Gospel John 18:33-37 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. In baptism, we are welcomed into the body of Christ and sent to share in the mission of God. We are called to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Sisters and brothers in Christ, do you intend to continue in the covenant of your baptism among God's people in this place? Those being welcomed respond. I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. Let us welcome these sisters and brothers in Christ to this community of faith. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. 8 The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy Eucharistic Prayer The thanksgiving uses the seven O Antiphon images for Christ: Wisdom, Lawgiver, Branch of Jesse's tree, Key of David, Dawning Day, Sovereign, and Emmanuel. The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. [8]

Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. 11 Today s flowers are sponsored by Peter Wong November and Advent November is a hinge in the liturgical calendar. At one point, Advent was a longer season than it is today, often seven weeks. In our current lectionary, themes of Advent begin to creep up on us during November, like a thief in the night. During November our readings highlight the last times, judgment, and preparation for Christ s second coming. On the three last Sundays of the church year and the four Sundays of Advent, our liturgy will begin with one of the O Antiphons each one contains an image for Christ from the Hebrew scriptures, and forms the basis for the beloved hymn, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. The Thanksgiving at Table also uses the seven O Antiphon images for Christ: Wisdom, Lawgiver, Branch of Jesse's tree, Key of David, Dawning Day, Sovereign, and Emmanuel. 12 Festival of Music for Advent & Christmas Sunday afternoon, December 13 th at 4:00 p.m. is the time! The Holy Trinity Choir, Children s Choir and full orchestra will fill the front of the church and present a beautiful program of music reflecting Advent hope as we anticipate the joy of Christmas! There will be uplifting moments of glorious singing as we all join the choirs and orchestra to sing together as well as quiet, reflective music to comfort and move us during this season of expectation. The transition from darkness to light in anticipation of the coming of Christ is a theme that runs throughout these weeks, and we will celebrate the coming light through the music of Kopylow, Bach, Händel, Rutter and many others. A lasagna dinner in Passavant Hall will follow the Festival, and all are invited. Don t miss this spectacular all-family event!
