Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church April 30, :30 & 10:30 a.m. Third Sunday of Easter Today s gospel begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the risen Christ walks with them, and then opens their eyes in the breaking of the bread. Each Sunday our hearts burn within us as the scriptures are proclaimed and Christ appears to us as bread is broken and wine is poured. The story of Emmaus becomes the pattern of our worship each Lord s day

10:30 A.M. LITURGY Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Prelude Christ lag in Todesbanden Georg Böhm ( ) Stand and turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. Gathering Hymn #391 This Joyful Eastertide Greeting Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Thanksgiving for Baptism Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is Risen indeed! Alleluia! / 3 /
The assembly is sprinkled water from the font. As you receive the droplets, you may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism. Feel free to take off your glasses! Canticle of Praise This is the Feast / 4 /
Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen Be seated WORD First Reading Acts 2:14a, Luke concluded Peter s initial sermon, marked by early Trinitarian theology, with the repentance, conversion, and baptism of three thousand people. It is likely that verse 42 is a description of Christian worship as Luke knew it. Luke s accounts of the early Christian movement indicated continuous success of apostolic preaching, and it is likely that the numbers of converts are symbolic of that success. Contemporary scholars estimate that in 70CE there were perhaps a total of 2,500 Christians alive and in 100 CE perhaps 7,500. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. / 5 /
Psalm 116:1-4, Refrain Tone I love the LORD, who has heard my voice, and listened to my supplication, for the LORD has given ear to me whenev- er I called. The cords of death entangled me; the anguish of the grave came upon me; I came to grief and sorrow. Then I called upon the name of the LORD: "O LORD, I pray you, save my life." Refrain How shall I re- pay the LORD for all the good things God has done for me? I will lift the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all God's people. Precious in your sight, O LORD, is the death of your servants. O LORD, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the LORD. Refrain I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all God's people, in the courts of the LORD's house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. Hallelujah! Refrain / 6 /
Second Reading 1 Peter 1:17-23 This remarkable summary of Easter faith demonstrates that the author of 1 Peter anticipated the imminent end of the world. In the meantime, the death and resurrection of Christ are available to the community through baptism and the word. The passage is filled with metaphors: God as Father, God as judge, life as exile, salvation as ransom, the lamb s blood, truth as purification, baptism as new birth, and the word of God as seed. In this early Christology, God raised Jesus from death. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Sung by the choir, then repeated by all and as indicated. Alleluia. Our hearts burn within us while you open to us the scriptures. Alleluia. (Luke 24:32) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Luke 24:13-35 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Although Mark s account of the empty tomb stated that the risen Jesus was to be seen in Galilee, at least a decade later Luke presented a story in which the risen Jesus appeared to two unnamed disciples in a small town outside of Jerusalem. Luke is moving the power of the resurrection out to the ends of the earth. The Emmaus story is one of many in Luke in which Jesus eats with disciples. Scholars postulate that in Luke s community, the evening of Sunday (a work day) was the time for the shared weekly meal. The breaking of the bread was an early Christian designation for holy communion. / 7 /
Sermon Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Silence Please stand. Hymn of the Day - #374 Day of Arising Prayers of Intercession After each petition: Lord, in your mercy,, Hear our prayer. Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Be seated. MEAL Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the Prison Book Ministry. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Offertory Hymn #370 Christ Jesus Lay in Death s Strong Bands Please stand / 8 /
Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin; who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: / 9 /
Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. / 10 /
Lamb of God Be seated. / 11 /
Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Anthem Stay With Us Silence Please stand. Prayer Walter L. Pelz (b.1926) Stay with us till night has come: our praise to you this day be sung. Bless our bread, open our eyes: Jesus, be our great surprise. Walk with us, our spirits sigh: hear when our weary spirits cry Feel again our loss, our pain: Jesus, take us to your side. Walk with us, the road will bend: make all our weeping, wailing end. Wipe our tears, forgive our fears: Jesus, lift the heavy cross. Talk with us till we behold a joyful life you will unfold: Heal our eyes to see the prize: Jesus, take us to the light. Stay with us till day is done: no tears nor dark shall dim the sun: Cheer the heart, your grace impart. Jesus, bring eternal life. (Text: Herbert F. Brokering, b. 1926) SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. / 12 /
Blessing Sending Hymn #377 Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen Sending Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Go in peace. Share the good news. Thanks be to God! Postlude Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen Keith Kolander (b. 1955) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time.
