1 Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church September 3, :30 a.m. Lectionary 22a The prophet Jeremiah speaks of the incurable wound of his suffering, yet finds in God s words the delight of his heart. When Peter doesn t grasp Jesus words about suffering, Jesus tells the disciples they will find their lives in losing them. Such sacrificial love is described by Paul when he urges us to associate with the lowly and not repay evil with evil. In worship we gather as a community that we might offer ourselves for the sake of our suffering world.

Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ WORD On this Sunday, it is as if the prophet Jeremiah anticipates Peter, and each of us, who both experience the cross and receive the comforting words of the saving God. Reading through Romans, today we encounter a passage with close connections to the appointed gospel. Paul speaks in brutal honesty about the difficulties of life as a Christian and with stunning rhetoric about the body of Christ seeking to overcome evil with good. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. [4]

5 Verse: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts so that we may know the hope to which God has called us. (Eph. 1:17, 18) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. This Sunday provides the second half of Matthew s comments about the responsibility and attitude of church leadership. The life that Christ offers is the cross, dying to ourselves, thus the opposite of how many human leaders function. All the baptized are carrying the cross on their forehead, wet in baptism, ashed at the outset of each Lent. Yet it is the cross of Christ, not our own, that saves; and our salvation entails the death of our selves. It is a complex reading. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Arise Chicago was founded in 1991 by a diverse group of religious leaders who created a model to combat some of poverty s root causes (workers being paid improperly, workers receiving less than a living wage, etc.) by bringing the moral voice to both non-union and union workplace struggles. 10 CHILDREN AND YOUTH Children age 4-12 are invited to join us for Sunday school each week. On the first day you'll meet your teachers and have loads of fun getting ready for an exciting year. We'll begin promptly at 10:00 am. Children age 4 through grade 2 meet upstairs in Passavant Hall. Children grades 3-6 meet in the Spiritual Life Center. Contact Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) if you have any questions. During both services on Sunday September 10th, we will bless backpacks and more in recognition of the start of the school year. No matter your age, bring your backpack, work bag or purse to worship for a special blessing and a gift from HTLC. Confirmation class for 7th-8th Grade Students A new confirmation group begins on September 17th. It's an exciting time to be the church and learn about God's amazing grace. All 7th-8th graders are welcome to join us for confirmation classes every other Sunday from 10:15-11:30 am. Contact Pastor Sevig to register or ask questions. 11 WEDNESDAY MORNING EUCHARIST 9:30am Beginning 9/6 Join us each or any Wednesday morning beginning September 6 when we will offer a brief Eucharist at 9:30am in the Sanctuary. The Eucharist will be followed by our weekly Wednesday study. All are welcome to either or both any week! MUSIC Choir Season Begins September 17 The Holy Trinity Choir season begins on Sunday, September 17 with rehearsal in the Choir Room at 9am. If you have been thinking about becoming a part of this exciting ministry at Holy Trinity, please join us this year! Rehearsals are on Sunday mornings at 8:30 or 9am depending on which service we will sing. The schedule is already available for the entire season. Admission is free. More information to come. SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Serve a Meal at The Crib Saturday, September pm Volunteers from Holy Trinity will prepare (at HTLC, enter at 3609 N. Magnolia doors) then serve a meal at The Crib youth shelter (at Lakeview Lutheran, 835 W Addison). We need volunteers to provide food items, cook, and serve the meal. Serve At The Lakeview Pantry Thursday, September pm Holy Trinity volunteers assist with working the pantry counter, restocking food, repacking bulk foods, sorting clothing and other various jobs that may be needed on the last Thursday of each month at 6pm. Commemorations for the Week September 9 + Peter Claver, priest, missionary to Colombia, died 1654 Born into Spanish nobility, Claver became a Jesuit missionary, and served in present-day Colombia. His ministry was focused on the slaves that arrived there. He gave them food and medicine, learned their dialects, and taught them Christianity. 13 NEW SERVICE TIMES STARTING SEPT. 10 These are exciting growth-filled times at Holy Trinity! Increased attendance on Sunday mornings led some to observe that seating is tight and as a result some first-time worshippers might be hesitant to return. In light of our commitment to hospitality and growth, beginning on September 10, our Sunday service times will be at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Both Sunday morning services will be complete services (approximately one hour in length) with the elements that define worship at Holy Trinity: 1) multi-sensory including processions and incense; 2) contemplative with the meditation bell calling us to silence before the liturgy and following the sermon; 3) musical making use of the fine offerings of our talented vocalists and instrumentalists. Speaking of music, both services will be led by the organ and will also use piano and other instruments on occasion. The Holy Trinity choir will alternate between services and each liturgy will include offerings by cantors, instrumentalists, special ensembles or the children s choir. Since most of our events need to take place on Sundays, our Sunday morning schedule will include choir rehearsals, Sunday school, confirmation classes, newcomer gatherings, and several other committees. Since the adult choir will be rehearsing during one of the services, we are fortunate to have a new assistant organist, John Weit, who will play for one of the liturgies each Sunday during the school year. Stay tuned for more details on the various schedules. The limits of space and time present some challenges to social time. During the fall we will experiment with coffee available at the back of the church between services, with delicious treats offered on special occasions. The staff and council have been discussing the new schedule since last winter. After a couple of months of the new format (including all of the above) we will invite you to offer feedback and suggestions. We have 150 worship volunteers at Holy Trinity (and that does not count the choirs!). Our new schedule allows more persons to volunteer and some (ushers and readers) to serve more regularly than previously. Finally, beginning September 6 we will be offering a brief Wednesday Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. for those free during the day and who would appreciate a quiet, more intimate service. [13]
