5 WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 58:9b-14 The passage from second Isaiah relates to both of Luke's points: we are not to point the finger at those whom we imagine are suffering a punishment from God; and our religious practices are meant to honor God, not to serve our own interests. When Christians hear about water in the city, they think of baptism in the church, and when we hear about being fed, we think of holy communion. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 71 Setting: Hal H. Hopson The refrain is sung by the choir and repeated by the assembly. The choir sings the verses. Refrain: In you, O Lord, I put my trust; keep me from fear and shame. You hear the prayers of all in need who call upon your name. Refrain Lord, from the moment of my birth through my allotted days, I shall not waver in my trust, or cease to sing your praise. Refrain O God, be never far away, your favor I implore; I ll hope in you through all the years, and praise you evermore. Refrain SECOND READING: Hebrews 12:18-29 This selection from Hebrews presents a complex picture of Christian worship. Here on earth the church is caught up to the heavenly city of God. Thanks to Christ the mediator, worshipers are not to fear the "blazing fire" of the Exodus; yet God is still "a consuming fire." Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 5

6 Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the choir then repeated by the assembly. Robert A. Benson The crowd was rejoicing at the wonderful things that Jesus was doing. (Luke 13:17) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. *GOSPEL: Luke 13:10-17 Perhaps, like countless old women throughout time, this woman had osteoporosis. But we all know about the condition of being bowed down by age, infirmity, or distress. In Christ we can stand upright. The sabbath controversy presents us with not only the question of how is God truly honored, but also the picture of Christ who replaces the sabbath, the one who sets us free. The holy gospel according to Luke. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. 11 Sign Up to Host Coffee Hour! We re trying something new this fall. In an effort to get even more people involved in our worship life here at Holy Trinity, we are creating an open sign up for coffee hour hosts. Check out the clipboard at the back of the church, and sign up for one or more Sundays on which to host coffee hour! It s super easy! All you need to do is bring snacks to share (e.g. veggies & hummus, cookies, breads, fruit, nuts, muffins, cake, just about any bite-sized type of snack, homemade or store-bought, it s up to you!), help put it out following worship, and clean up afterward. Daytimers in August Daytimers of Holy Trinity will meet for a potluck lunch on Wed. August 28, around 11:15 a.m. in the St. Mark's room. Please bring whatever food you'd like to share. Anyone free during the day is welcome to join us. Parent s Group A parents' group for parents with preschool children will be meeting Tuesday mornings from 10-11:30 a.m., starting this Tuesday, September 3. We will meet in the choir room, and toys will be available for the kids to play with while the parents have a chance to hang out. Please bring a snack to share. 12 Synopsis: At a home for retired musicians, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents. Help Holy Trinity welcome a refugee family Over 40 million people worldwide are living as refugees, forced to leave their home country because of war, violence or persecution. This summer, you can help Holy Trinity and RefugeeOne give a family a fresh start. We won't know much about the family until they arrive in late August, but there is a lot we can do to prepare. Please visit the sign-up sheets in the back of the church to select from a registry of needed household items. If you're interesting in volunteering your time, you can sign up to help decorate the apartment, greet the family at O'Hare airport, or help the family once they arrive. 13 Jennifer Prinz, Regional Gift Planner for the ELCA Foundation, works with congregations such as ours to establish and grow mission endowment funds. Her background is in outreach, marketing and development with non-profit organizations. Prior to joining the ELCA Foundation, she was Director of Professional Development at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. She holds a B.A. from St. Ambrose and an M.A. in Public Administration from Drake University. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Wednesday, August 28 Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, died 430 Augustine was one of the greatest theologians of the Western church. Born in North Africa, he was a philosophy student in Carthage, where he later became a teacher of rhetoric. Much of his young life was a debauched one. As an adult he came under the influence of Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and through him came to see Christianity as a religion appropriate for a philosopher. Augustine was baptized by Ambrose at the Easter Vigil in 387. He was ordained four years later and made bishop of Hippo in 396. Augustine was a defender of the Christian faith and argued, against the Donatists, that the holiness of the church did not depend on the holiness of its members, particularly the clergy, but that holiness comes from Christ, the head of the church. Augustine's autobiography, Confessions, tells of his slow movement toward faith and includes the line "Late have I loved thee." Wednesday, August 28 Moses the Black, monk, martyr, died around 405 A man of great strength and rough character, Moses the Black was converted to Christian faith toward the close of the fourth century. Prior to his conversion he had been a thief and a leader of a gang of robbers. The story of his conversion is unknown, but eventually he became a desert monk at Skete. The habit of his monastic community was white, though Moses is reported to have said, "God knows I am black within." The change in his heart and life had a profound impact on his native Ethiopia.
