1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church December 11, :30 a.m. Third Sunday of Advent, Year A A note of joyful expectation marks today s worship. Isaiah announces that the desert shall rejoice and blossom. Jesus points to signs of God s reign: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear. We wait with patience for the coming of the Lord, even as we rejoice at his presence among us this day: in word and holy supper, in church and in our homes, in silent reflection and in works of justice and love. We pray that God would open our eyes and ears to the wonders of Christ s advent among us.

Amen Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Gathering Hymn Greeting INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. #241 O Lord, How Shall I Meet You The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. 3 WORD Sometimes in the lectionary, the first reading presents the full citation that is referred to in the gospel reading. This Sunday, the first reading is the oracle from Isaiah that Jesus cites in today s gospel reading. On Sunday, Christians praise the resurrection of Christ as just such a joyous transformation of all things. The Sunday liturgy means to celebrate that transformation. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: First Reading Isaiah 35:1-10 Psalm 146:5-10 Setting: Robert A. Hobby The cantor sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the LORD their God; who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps promis- es forever; who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The LORD sets the captive free. The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. Refrain The LORD cares for the stranger; the LORD sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The LORD shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. 4 Second Reading James 5:7-10 The Old Testament and gospel readings that promise wondrous signs of the presence of the Lord are held next to this New Testament call to patience. In Advent, we join the early church in waiting, perhaps impatiently, for the coming of the Judge and for the end of suffering and evil. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Helgen Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Matthew 11:2-11 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day I am sending my messenger before you, who will prepare your way before you. (Matt. 11:10) The gospel of Advent 3 responds to the gospel of Advent 2: last week John the Baptist predicted the coming judgment, and this week Jesus, also citing the prophet Isaiah, speaks of the transformative power of his ministry. Each week we hear more about what the presence of God means for the world, today and at the end of time. That coming begins here, in word and sacrament. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, and he shall gather the lambs with his arm, And carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Come unto him, all ye that labor; come unto him that are heavy laden, and he will give you rest. Take his yoke upon you and learn of him, for he is meek and lowly of heart, And ye shall find rest unto your souls. 10 Prayer Shawl Ministry Invitation Dec 18 Holy Trinity s prayer shawl ministry began in 2012; since then we have given away dozens of shawls, as well as hats, scarves, and baby blankets. This winter we are focusing on hats, scarves, and gloves for those in need. We invite anyone who s interested whether you re expert or novice in joining us in person or in spirit. Our dedicated group of stitchers gather following the 2 nd worship service at HT Lakeview on the third Sunday of each month. Please come to our next gathering on Dec. 18 at 11:45. Bring yarn and needles or just bring your questions and interest! Contact Barbara Wahler if you have any questions. Upcoming Service Opportunities Serve Food with Youth Outreach Bus Thursday, December 29 Volunteers will prepare bagged meals here at Holy Trinity beginning at 6:00 p.m. After, they will meet the Outreach Bus and distribute the meals. HTLC Endowment Fund Grants Deadline Jan 20 Holy Trinity's Mission Endowment Committee is pleased to announce for the fourth year in a row the availability of a small number of grants that will extend our commitment to and support of mission beyond our congregation. Registered charities qualified under IRS 501(c)(3) are eligible to apply for grants of up to $1,500 with the endorsement and signature of a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Commemorations for the Week December 13 Lucy, martyr, died 304 Lucy was a young Christian of Sicily who was martyred during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. Her celebration became particularly important in Sweden and Norway, perhaps because the feast of Lucia (whose name means "light") originally fell on the shortest day of the year. December 14 John of the Cross, renewer of the church, died 1591 John was a member of the Carmelite monastic order, and worked to reform it. His writings reflect a deep interest in mystical thought and meditation. December 16 Las Posadas (LLC) This celebration, long popular in Mexico, takes its name from the "posadas," or lodgings, sought by Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. Their search is reenacted in a neighborhood, unsuccessfully, until finally they are welcomed in, and a party commences. [10]

Today's service will feature brief readings, narration, and hymns and carols of Advent and Christmas. Saturday, December :30 p.m. - Christmas Eve Eucharist Last approximately 55 minutes. A simple service and a favorite for families with children. Includes lighting of hand candles. + 9:45 p.m. - Pre-service music + 10:00 p.m. - The Christ Mass Lasts approximately 70 minutes. Adult choir sings. Similar to the 10:30 am Sunday service, it includes processions, incense, and sung liturgy. Sunday, December :30 a.m. - Christmas Day Eucharist The Christmas Day liturgy features the gospel from John 1, telling of the incarnation, the Word made flesh. Sunday, January :30 a.m. Eucharist Feast of the Name of Jesus (No 8:30 a.m. service or Sunday School) Sunday, January 8 + 8:30 a.m. - Eucharist + 10:30 a.m. Epiphany Festival Eucharist A liturgy beloved at Holy Trinity. This year it will include carols marking the Epiphany and the Baptism of Our Lord, with the yearly visit by the Magi. We gather for worship to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things we re for Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things we re against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. [13]
