1 LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY Lectionary 14 July 7, :30 am To Our Guests: Welcome! Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. 2 ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: We have no good apart from God. That makes our Lord's call to follow him an invitation to freedom. This is freedom to revel in the Spirit's fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, and the like. This is the path of life. PRELUDE Concerto for Two Violas Georg Philipp Telemann ( ) Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *GATHERING HYMN #575 In Christ Called to Baptize *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY 2 WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 66:10-14 Christians have often used biblical references to Jerusalem as metaphors for the church itself. So the church, which sends us out to proclaim the kingdom, is like a mother, washing us in baptism, nursing us with the wine of the eucharist. This passage is one of the very few in the Bible where God is explicitly likened to a mother. The passage is set parallel to Luke 10 to provide an image of nurture to accompany the tasks of Christian proclamation. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

3 PSALM 66:1-12 Setting: Hal H. Hopson The refrain is sung by the cantors and repeated by the assembly. Verses are sung by the cantors. Refrain: Make a joyful noise to God! All creation join the song! See God s wonders here displayed, unexcelled for ages long. Glorious is God s sacred name, ages old, yet still the same. Refrain Come and see what God has done: Great the blessings to the just; walked the chosen through the sea; brought their mighty foes to dust. Let us lift a thankful voice; praise God s mercies, sing, rejoice! Refrain Bless the Lord, our refuge sure; let our song of praise be heard! By whose justice, we are tried; by whose grace, our guilt deferred. When our days on earth are past, God will guide us home at last. Refrain SECOND READING: Galatians 6:[1-6] 7-16 In this the lectionary's last semi-continuous reading of Galatians, Paul renews his call for Christians to live in Christ's new creation. Lutherans have judged Galatians to be one of the most Christocentric books in the Bible, and thus we continue to give it serious attention. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the cantors then repeated by the assembly. 4 *GOSPEL: Luke 9:51-62 Now it is we who are called both to tolerate nonbelievers and to leave all to follow Christ as we proclaim the kingdom. The challenge is to apply the radicalness of Jesus' words to our lives in the world. The holy gospel according to Luke. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout for joy: 5

6 During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. 7 All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Help Holy Trinity welcome a refugee family Over 40 million people worldwide are living as refugees, forced to leave their home country because of war, violence or persecution. This summer, you can help Holy Trinity and RefugeeOne give a family a fresh start. We won't know much about the family until they arrive in late August, but there is a lot we can do to prepare. Please visit the sign-up sheets in the back of the church to select from a registry of needed household items. If you're interesting in volunteering your time, you can sign up to help decorate the apartment, greet the family at O'Hare airport, or help the family once they arrive. 11 HTLOOP: NEW MISSION INITIATIVE Proposed Saturday Night Service in the South Loop There is currently not an ELCA congregation in downtown Chicago. Holy Trinity has experienced growth in recent years and is planning to offer a Saturday night service at Grace Place (home of Grace Episcopal Church), a block north of Dearborn Station. Learn more and sign up for updates at htloop.htchicago.org Outreach Strategies Proposed So Far: 1. Personally invite HTLC members near downtown (20) and south and west (20). 2. Partner with South Loop Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry. 3. Reach out to alumni of Valparaiso, Augustana (Rock Island) and Lutheran Volunteer Corp who live downtown. 4. Using HTLC's contacts, invite non-members/guests who live downtown. 5. Presence on HTLC's website (folks looking for a church-particularly ELCAwho do an Internet search) 6. Partner with LSTC, especially mission class taught by Stephen Bouman 7. Word of mouth / invitations from others involved 8. Advertising in various neighborhoods, buildings, venues 9. Facebook. Yelp. Social media. 10. Outreach to HT members who work in the Loop (approximately 46). Weekday services on special occasions such as Ash Wednesday. Lunch forums that connect faith and the workplace. 11. Outreach to area hotels. 12. Other advertising / marketing. 13. Open house / social event at Grace Place (and possibly outside) And a dozen more strategies yet to develop! 11
