1 Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church August 20, :30 a.m. Lectionary 20a In Isaiah we hear that God s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need.

For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated WORD The poem from Third Isaiah is appointed here to ground Jesus openness to the Gentile in a similar message of Israelite tradition. This text invites Christians to welcome the stranger into the covenant in Christ. Prayer of the Day First Reading Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [3]

4 Psalm 67 Setting: Ray Makeever The cantor first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. Refrain: Tone: 1 May God be merciful to us and bless us; may the light of God s face shine upon us. 2 Let your way be known upon earth, your saving health a- mong all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the na- tions on earth. 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 6 The earth has brought forth its increase; God, our own God, has blessed us. Refrain 7 May God give us blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe. Refrain Second Reading Romans 11:1-2a, This next appointed passage in Romans coordinates well with the first reading and the gospel. Isaiah and Matthew open the tradition to the Gentile, while Paul defends the place of the Jew in the mercy of God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [4]

5 Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Verse: Jesus preached the good news of the kingdom and cured every sickness among the people. (Matt. 9:23) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. The narrative of the Canaanite woman, so odd in its depiction of Jesus, indicates Matthew s understanding that, despite the emphasis on righteousness in the kingdom of heaven, faith in Christ is what saves. Much Christian interpretation has explained away Jesus talk by claiming he was merely testing her faith, although Matthew does not say this. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. During the distribution of communion, those who desire may proceed to the back of the church to receive anointing with oil. A cross will be traced on your forehead reminding you of the promise God makes with you in baptism and as a sign of God s healing presence amid suffering whether your own, those dear to you, those facing injustice, and the earth s own abuse. #612 Healer of Our Every Ill [8]

11 NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Sunday School Teachers Needed We have a growing and thriving Sunday school at Holy Trinity and we need additional teachers. Anyone who loves kids and has a desire to share faith is welcome to teach, no education degree is required. We sing and play together each Sunday as we learn bible stories and do projects. There are four age groups: Pre-K/Kindergarten, 1-2 grade, 3-4 grade and 5-6 grade. Coteachers and substitute teachers are needed. Please speak with Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) for more information. Refugee Project Update The siblings from Eritrea, Tesfalem and Lewam, that HTLC is helping co-sponsor with RefugeeOne have started English classes and settling into life in Chicago. We are still in need of volunteers who would be able to meet with them on a periodic basis, such as visiting them, taking them on outings, or showing them how to navigate living in Chicago. Even a simple visit to practice English conversation is helpful; we learn a lot about each other and help them build the language capacity that will allow them to be employed and ultimately self-sufficient. 12 Can't Make It On A Sunday Morning? + Worship at Holy Trinity's South Loop Site at Grace Place, 637 S. Dearborn Saturdays at 5pm Commemorations for the Week Sunday, August 20 + Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, died 1153 Bernard, a Cistercian monk, was a man of great spirituality who wrote mystical works and criticized those whom he thought took an overly intellectual approach to the faith. He became an abbot, and wrote several hymns that are still beloved today. Thursday, August 24 + Bartholomew, Apostle Mentioned as one of Jesus' disciples in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Bartholomew's name is replaced in John's gospel by Nathanael, leading many to believe that the two are different names for the same person. Little is known about his work, though some traditions place him later in India or Armenia. [12]
