1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church September 18, :30 a.m. Lectionary 25c As we are invited today to consider what it means to be managers (rather than owners) of all that we have, it is crucial to recall that we are bought with a price. Christ Jesus, himself human,... gave himself a ransom for all. Apart from the generosity of God we have nothing we are nothing. By God s gracious favor we have everything we need.

GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. 4 First Reading Amos 8:4-7 WORD By setting Amos s condemnation of those who with dishonesty oppress the poor next to Luke 16, the lectionary underlines both vv of the gospel reading, that believers are to serve God rather than material wealth, and vv. 8-9, that in view of the coming eschaton, believers need to anticipate the possibility of God s punishment. 5 Not only are Christians to pray for their rulers, but to thank God for them. The true ruler over believers is God. This counsel towards societal concord was directed to people who were not in a democracy, and passages such as this have encouraged some Christians into a social passivity. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-7 Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Helgen The cantors sing first and the assembly repeats. Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; strive side by side for the faith of the gospel. (Phil. 1:27) The children of light are called to be faithful to what has genuine value the riches of the kingdom. God is our master, from whom come sometimes unlikely judgments about human life. 14 Commemorations for the Week Dag Hammarskjöld, renewer of society, died 1961 September 18 A Swedish diplomat, Hammarskjöld served as the second Secretary General of the United Nations until his death in a plane crash while trying to negotiate peace in present-day Zambia. His journal, published as Markings, revealed the depth of his Christian faith. Nelson Wesley Trout, bishop, died 1996 (TFF) September 20 A native of Ohio, Trout served parishes in several parts of the United States before being elected bishop of the South Pacific District of the American Lutheran Church, the first African American Lutheran to serve in such a capacity. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist September 21 Matthew (or Levi) was a tax collector in Capernaum for the Roman government. Tax collectors were frequently despised for dishonesty and for assisting the occupiers. Jesus nevertheless showed love for them, and chose Matthew to be a disciple. Blessing Of Animals + October :30 A.M. Join us for Holy Trinity's 18th annual Blessing of Animals on October 2 at the 10:30 a.m. service. The pet blessing is held each year on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Francis which is October 4. Bring your pets or stuffed animals and invite your friends and neighbors. 15 MUSIC AT HOLY TRINITY Choir Season Begins Today The Holy Trinity Choir season gets under way today! If you have been thinking about becoming a part of the choir at Holy Trinity, please join us! Extensive experience is not required, although note reading ability is helpful. Rehearsals are held on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Choir sings at the 10:30 service, and the schedule is already available for the entire season. Bach Cantata October :30 a.m. Service Bach Cantata #51 Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen ( Shout for joy to God, all lands ) Soprano Kari Balck will be accompanied by strings and trumpet in this bright and uplifting solo cantata of praise by Johann Sebastian Bach. Harpsichordist Jason Moy will play a portion of Bach s Goldberg Variations as pre-service music that day, and will lead the Cantata from the keyboard. Organ Recital October :00 p.m. Guest organist Jonathan Oblander is the Tonal Director for the Berghaus Organ Company and Minister of Music at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Oak Park. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Valparaiso University, and a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School. He has served a number of churches musically, most recently including Grace Lutheran, River Forest. Jonathan is a stunning performer. Festival of Music for Advent and Christmas December 11, :00 p.m. Featuring the Holy Trinity Choir, Children s Choir and Full Orchestra For Everyone Born An Advent call for Social Justice explores the need for hope and a challenge to serve in a difficult and tumultuous world. 16 CROP HUNGER WALK Sunday, September 25, marks the 34th anniversary of the Chicago CROP Hunger Walk, a walk that seeks to help children and families worldwide and right here in the U.S. have food for today, while building towards a more secure tomorrow. Monies raised at the Chicago CROP Hunger walk work towards hunger alleviation by supporting the global development work of Church World Service and local hunger fighting organizations, including South Loop Campus Ministry (which is led by our very own Pr. Ben!) and their Sunday Community Meals. This year s walk will be Sunday, September 25, We will step off from St James Common, 65 E Huron. You can join our team and walk or just donate to our team. Things we re against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life.
