Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church September 17, am & 11am Lectionary 24a In today s second reading Paul questions why we judge one another, since we all stand before the judgment of God. Yet we do sin against one another, and Jesus challenge that we forgive seventy-seven times reveals God s boundless mercy. When we hear the words of forgiveness in worship and sign ourselves with the cross, we are renewed in baptism to be signs of reconciliation in the world.

Prelude 9am: Allegretto Charles V. Stanford ( ) 11am: Antiphon V: Andante moderato Antiphon III: Très lent et sans rigueur Marçel Dupré ( ) Gathering Hymn Greeting Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. #867 In Thee Is Gladness GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand, as you are able, and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the c, ross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in processions adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 9am: Kyrie 11am: Baptism See page 10 for the 11am Baptism [2]

Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ WORD The conclusion of the Joseph legends was chosen to parallel Matthew s story of the unforgiving slave. The Christian insistence that we are to forgive one another repeats the message in the Hebrew Bible that calls for forgiveness within the community. Indeed, the popular notion that forgiveness is a virtue invented by Christians is false. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Prayer of the Day First Reading Genesis 50:15-21 Psalm 103:8-13 Setting: Daniel Kallman The cantor first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. Tone: 8 LORD, you are full of compas- sion and mercy, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love; 9 you will not al- ways accuse us, nor will you keep your an- ger forever. 10 You have not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities. Refrain 11 For as the heavens are high a- bove the earth, so great is your steadfast love for those who fear you. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far have you removed our transgres- sions from us. 13 As a father has compassion for his children, so you have compassion for those who fear you, O LORD. Refrain [3]

Second Reading Romans 14:1-12 Paul s refusal to lay down a Christian law and his call to forbearance within the community come as a word of life to us as in our own time we fiercely debate conflicted issues. What binds us into one is the death and resurrection of Christ, not uniformity in open questions. We are to trust that it is God who judges. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Carl F. Schalk Sung first by the cantor and repeated by all as indicated. The verse is sung by the cantor. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Verse: We have an advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous; your sins are forgiven on account of his name (1 John 2:1, 12) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gospel Matthew 18:21-35 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence This fourth discourse provides a response to the first discourse in Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount: Christians do not, in fact, live in godly perfection, but continuously need the mercy of God and the forgiveness of the community. The use of the imagery of debt suggests that we actually owe to one another both ethical living and gracious forgiveness. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. [4]

~ please stand, as you are able ~ #359 Where Charity and Love Prevail After each petition: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. See page 9 for the 9am Confession and Forgiveness Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession 9am: Confession and Forgiveness The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the Chicago CROP walk (more info on page 15). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table #659 Will You Let Me Be Your Servant Offertory Music 9am Hymn The Quiet Heart John Ness Beck ( ) See page 8 for text. 11am Anthem [5]

Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue ~ please stand as you are able ~ Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation [6]

Great Amen The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Eat This Bread Please remain standing. Text: Taizé Community, with music, 1984, Les Presses de Taizé, GIA Publications, Inc., agent Tune: [BERTHIER] Jacques Berthier, [7]

Communion Communion Music 9am Anthem ~ please be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. The Quiet Heart John Ness Beck ( ) The quiet heart knows the pace of kindness. The quiet heart measures love in gentleness. The quiet heart sees beauty in reality. The quiet heart survives in understanding. The quiet heart waits in yearning patience to find the mind of God. (Text: John Ness Beck) 11am Hymn #659 Will You Let Me Be Your Servant Silence Prayer Blessing Sending Hymn Sending ~ please stand ~ #836 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God! SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. [8]

Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the rear of the nave for refreshments and social time. Altar Flowers are sponsored by Andy and Lisa Snyder In honor of their wedding anniversary Postlude 9am: In Thee Is Gladness J.S. Bach ( ) 11am: Jubilate Deo omnis terra Dom Paul Benoit ( ) Confession and Forgiveness (9am) ~following an invitation to confession, please kneel as you are able~ God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. ~Stand, as you are able, and face the baptismal font.~ The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Rejoice in this good news! [9]

Presentation Assembly response: We do. Baptism (11am) Profession of Faith Renunciation of Evil Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Thanksgiving at the Font The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. [10]
