Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church March 5, :30 & 10:30 a.m. First Sunday in Lent Today's gospel tells of Jesus temptation in the desert. His forty-day fast becomes the basis of our Lenten pilgrimage. In the early church Lent was a time of intense preparation for those to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. This catechetical focus on the meaning of faith is at the heart of our Lenten journey to the baptismal waters of Easter. Hungry for God s mercy, we receive the bread of life to nourish us for the days ahead.

10:30 A.M. LITURGY Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Prelude Allegro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) (from Clarinet Concerto, K. 622) Penitential Litany During Lent the confession is sung as a penitential litany that is based on the seven deadly sins. On the First Sunday in Lent the procession around the church represents our baptismal journey from confession to forgiveness, from captivity to freedom, from death to life, and from Lent to Easter. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. / 3 /

Refrain: For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: Refrain For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Refrain For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Refrain For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Refrain For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: Refrain For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: Refrain For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Refrain The presiding minister addresses the assembly: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim / 4 /

the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Greeting The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen Be seated / 5 /

WORD First Reading Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 One of the most well-known stories in the Bible, the account in Genesis 2 3, which is a more ancient story than is the liturgical text of Genesis 1, offered one explanation of why in God s creation there came to be sin, shame, and death. The story situated the origins of human life in what is now Iraq and understood our alienation from God as arising with the very first humans. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Psalm 32:1-7 The choir sings the refrain and all repeat and sing it as indicated. The choir sings the verses. Blest is the one whose sin is forgiv n, and whose wrongs are put far away. Happy is the one free of guilt, whose spirit is pure, whose words are the truth. Refrain When I refused to confess all my sin. My body wasted away. Day and night my sins were before me: My strength dried up like the summer s heat. Refrain Then I declared my sin to the Lord, and my heavy guilt I confessed; God forgave all my transgressions; my sin and guilt were taken away. Refrain When the faithful have floods rushing down, those same floods are beyond their reach. The Lord will be their hiding place, salvation s joy shall be their song. Refrain / 6 /

Second Reading Romans 5:12-19 In about 57 CE, Paul wrote to the church in Rome a comprehensive discussion of the good news, that God saves those who believe. Believers are restored to relationship with God because of their faith in Christ, not because they keep the Jewish Torah. Paul interpreted the story in Genesis 2 3 by metaphorically paralleling Adam to Christ, the sinner to the sinless, trespass to grace, death to life. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4) Gospel Matthew 4:1-11 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. in Matthew s gospel, Jesus, after being baptized by John the Baptist, withstood the devil s temptations by relying on the power of the words in Hebrew scriptures. For Matthew, God s word to ancient Israel accompanied Jesus as he inaugurated the kingdom of heaven. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Silence / 7 /

Please stand. Hymn of the Day #319 Oh Lord, Throughout These Forty Days Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Prayers of Intercession please kneel Hear us, O God, Your mercy is great. Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Be seated. / 8 /

MEAL Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for ONE Northside. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Offertory Anthem Jesus Calls Us Joy Patterson (b. 1931) Please note text in hymn #696 Please stand Great Thanksgiving / 9 /

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. / 10 /

Lamb of God Be seated. / 11 /

Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Hymns Silence Please stand. Prayer #325 I Want Jesus to Walk With Me #768 Lead Me, Guide Me SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Blessing Sending Hymn #326 Bless Now, O God, the Journey Sending Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God. / 12 /

Psalm 32:1-7 (8:30): Sung responsively between cantor and congregation Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away! Happy are they to whom the LORD im- putes no guilt, and in whose spirit there is no guile! While I held my tongue, my bones with- ered away, because of my groaning all day long. For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not con- ceal my guilt. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD." Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin. Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them. You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; I will guide you with my eye. Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding; who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you." Great are the tribulations of the wicked; but mercy embraces those who trust in the LORD. Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the LORD; shout for joy, all who are true of heart. / 15 /

ONE HOPE: RE-MEMBERING THE BODY OF CHRIST LENT 2017 Holy Trinity s book for Lent Available at the back of the church. $8.00. You may pay online at giving.htchicago.org This is a rich ecumenical resource designed to help Catholic and Lutheran communities mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Consider reading and discussing the book with others, particularly Roman Catholics, or use it as a preparation for the Mythbusters event on Saturday, April 1. The chapters cover themes such as prayer, communion, singing, forgiveness, justice, and death and are the product of a collaborative process by six gifted scholars and pastoral leaders, three Lutheran and three Catholic. Special Midweek Lenten Service Holden Evening Prayer Wednesday, March 22, 7:15 p.m. Catholic-Lutheran Myth Busters Saturday, April 1 + 9:30 - Noon Do Catholics worship the Virgin Mary and the saints? Do Lutherans think of the Eucharist as just bread and wine? Do Catholics not value the Bible as much as Protestants? Do Lutherans think they emphasize grace while Catholics talk about works? These are a few examples of misconceptions Lutherans and Catholics have had of one another in the past. In this year of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we invite you to come and learn about some of the differences and commonalities among Lutherans and Roman Catholics, especially in the years since Vatican II. Whether you are in a Lutheran-Catholic marriage, the child of a Lutheran and Catholic, whether you are committed to ecumenism or simply curious, join us for a lively inquiry. We are inviting neighboring Lutheran and Roman Catholic congregations as well. Sign up at the back of the Sanctuary. / 16 /
