1 Liturgy At HOLY TRINITY Lutheran Church August 6, :30 a.m. Lectionary 18a In today s first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. At the eucharistic table we remember all who are hungry or poor in our world today. As we share the bread of life, we are sent forth to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry.

GATHERING Prelude Overture in C Major, K. 356 Johann Joseph Fux ( ) Confession and Forgiveness The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Please stand as you are able. Following an invitation please kneel as you are able. Silence is kept for reflection. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Stand, as you are able, and face the baptismal font. 3 The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ WORD Greeting Prayer of the Day Already heard at this year s Easter Vigil as a picture of the resurrection, this Sunday the sixth-century poem in Second Isaiah presents the metaphor of food as background to the narrative of the feeding of the five thousand. The Old Testament includes both many poems with the metaphor of food and many narratives of God s miraculous feedings. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. 8 The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 LORD, you are good to all, and your compassion is over all your works. 4 14 The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all wait upon you, O LORD, and you give them their food in due season. 16 You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 You are righteous in all your ways and loving in all your works. 18 You are near to all who call upon you, to all who call up- on you faithfully. 19 You fulfill the desire of those who fear you; you hear their cry and save them. 20 You watch over all those who love you, but all the wicked you shall destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD; let all flesh bless God s holy name forev- er and ever. Refrain Second Reading Romans 9:1-5 Centuries of Christian teaching that only Christians can be saved stand in contrast to Paul s confidence that God s promises to the Jews continue. Paul assumes that both Jews and Gentiles are being fed by God on the mountain. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [4]

5 Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Verse: One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:4) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Christians have seen the stories of the feeding of the multitude as pictures of both the proclamation of the word, by which God s people thrive, and holy communion, in which the blessing of Jesus creates continuous food for his people. The miracle takes place each Sunday. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. May the Bread of Angels Become bread for humankind; The Bread of Heaven puts All foreshadowings to an end; Oh, how miraculous! The body of the Lord will nourish the poor, the servile, and the humble. SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the garden to the east of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Commemorations for the Week August 8 + Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), died 1221 Dominic was a Spanish priest who saw the wealth of the clergy as a stumbling block for the church, so he formed a movement, the Order of Preachers (commonly called Dominicans) devoted to itinerant preaching and living in poverty. August 10 + Lawrence, deacon, martyr, died 258 As one of the seven deacons of the church at Rome, Lawrence was responsible for the church's financial matters and for the care of the poor. Asked by the emperor to gather the church's treasure, he presented a collection of orphans, lepers, and the like. The enraged emperor had him put to death. August 11 + Clare, Abbess of San Damiano, died 1253 A contemporary of Francis of Assisi, Clare and a growing number of companions established a women's Franciscan community, called the Order of Poor Ladies, or Poor Clares. She inspired other women to pursue spiritual goals. [10]
