Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Glory be to God on high, peace on earth be giv-en! 3 ::: Word ::: Often in the lectionary, the Old Testament reading presents a parallel to the gospel. Centuries ago, God had carried the Jewish people away from an enemy king and back to safety, and later in history, God protected the infant Jesus from the soldiers of Herod. The story of Jesus reiterates God's history with Israel. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Let the whole creation cry, Glory to the Lord on high. Heav n and earth, awake and sing, God is our eternal King. Refrain Men and women, young and old, raise the anthem manifold; join with children s songs of praise, worship God through length of days. Refrain Praise God, all you hosts above, ever shining forth in love; sun and moon, uplift your voice; night and stars, in God rejoice! Refrain From the north to southern poles let the mighty chorus roll; Holy, holy, holy One, Glory be to God alone! Refrain All of Advent, all of the entire Christian year, is summed up in Paul's opening sentence. In Year A, the Matthean story of Herod's murder of the infants of Bethlehem reminds worshipers that Jesus was born in order to die. The stereotypical Christmas mood of joy cannot forget the endless sufferings of the innocent, the grief of the mourners, the continued abuse of children, and Christ's crucifixion. Yet the narrative calls us to trust in the protection of our God. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6 The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. [6]

Either way, THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! ::: Parish Notes ::: Coffee Hosts Needed A new year is almost upon us, and we are in need of Coffee Hour hosts! Please check the clipboard at the back of the church (or on the coffee hour table), and sign up to bring snacks for our after church coffee time. It s easy! All you need to do is this: 1. Bring snacks (homemade or store-bought) such as cookies, cake, muffins, crackers, fruit, veggies, really anything that can be eaten easily by hand! 2. Set them out (along with the coffee and other items) following worship. 3. Clean up after people leave and/or snacks are gone. 10 Homeless Youth Donation Drive In partnership with the Human Rights Campaign and the Broadway Youth Center, Holy Trinity will be collecting various toiletries and clothing items to be distributed to homeless youth in January. Please bring unopened travel-sized toiletries including soaps, shampoos, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, chapstick, and deodorant, as well as new and unused socks, underwear, and bras. A box is set up in the narthex to collect these items. We will accept items through January 12. For more information, contact Chris Hanna (chrisphanna@gmail.com). Endowment Fund Grants While Holy Trinity Lutheran Church's Mission Endowment Fund is small, we intend to use a portion of its earnings each year to extend our commitment to and support of mission beyond our congregation. Registered charities qualified under IRS 501(c)(3) are eligible to apply for grants up to $1,000 with the endorsement and signature of a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The grant deadline for 2013 and 2014 annual grants is January 15, You can download the application form at holytrinitychicago.org/endowment. Prayer Shawl Ministry Meeting TODAY + 11:45 a.m. Prayer shawl ministry is a group of knitters and crocheters (beginner to novice) who create blessed items such as shawls and scarves to give to adoptions agencies, hospice and other community members in need. All are welcome to join the group, even if you have never knitted or crocheted before! Baptism Seminar Tuesday, January 7 + 7:00 p.m. This seminar is offered prior to baptismal Sundays for expectant parents, parents with newborns, those planning a baptism in the coming months, parents or others who would like a refresher on the meaning and theology of baptism.
