Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church February am & 11am Liturgy at First Sunday in Lent Holy Trinity OUR LITURGY DURING LENT Kneeling: Lent is a time for penitence and reflection. The posture of kneeling during Lent suggests repentance and dependence on God. You are welcome to use the pew kneelers before the liturgy or after receiving communion. In the Loop Environment: During Lent our worship environment and liturgy are simplified, helping us to focus on essentials. Flowers are not used during Lent and the word alleluia is not spoken or sung until Easter. The bare branches in the worship space evoke the wilderness. As a fast for the eyes we have removed the icons from the worship space and replaced them with Stations of the Cross created by Holy Trinity member Richard Bough. The word Lent means spring and we await the turning of winter to spring as we prepare our hearts with joy for the annual paschal celebration of Jesus death and resurrection. On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah s family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism. The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world.

Prelude Pavane (Op. 50) Gabriel Fauré ( ) Confession and Forgiveness The assembly sings the refrain after the choir, and following each verse. Please sing in harmony. Refrain: Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Please stand as you are able as the litany begins. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. On the First Sunday in Lent the confession is sung as a penitential litany. The procession around the church represents our journey from confession to forgiveness, from death to life, from captivity to freedom, and from Lent to Easter. For self-centered living and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: Refrain For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Refrain For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Refrain [2]

For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Refrain For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: Refrain For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: Refrain For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Refrain The presiding minister addresses the assembly: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Greeting Prayer of the Day [3]

First Reading Genesis 9:8-17 WORD Like popular disaster films, the flood myth expresses our fears of annihilation. Yet in the biblical version, God restores all things to beauty and promise. Even the natural world, such as the rainbow, can remind us of God s covenant of grace. In the resurrection of Christ, we celebrate that the forty days of the flood are over. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 25:1-10 Setting: Hal Hopson The cantor/choir first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor/choir sings the verses. To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul, In you, O God, I trust; Let all vain things be put to shame, And languish in the dust. Refrain Make me to know your paths, O God, And lead me in your ways; To learn your saving truth my heart Shall meditate each day. Refrain The Lord is goodness, truth, and love, God s path the saints have trod; And children of the covenant Shall walk beside their God. Refrain Remember all your mercy, Lord, Your love from age to age; Forgive the weakness in days of youth And bring me home at last. Refrain Second Reading 1 Peter 3:18-22 This extremely important New Testament passage is an early example of Christian interpretation of the Old Testament. Christians treasure the story of the flood as a picture of baptism, God saving eight persons, and now us, through the waters. Lent is like our forty days in the ark. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [4]

Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:4) We begin our Christian life with baptism and then, like Jesus, face testing. The Spirit of God accompanies us, both in baptism and in our wilderness. In receiving the gospel, the time is fulfilled; we repent and believe in the good news. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~please stand as you are able~ #326 Bless, Now, O God, the Journey I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Aaron David Miller Sung by the choir. Gospel Mark 1:9-15 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Apostles Creed I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. [5]

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. ~ please kneel, as you are able ~ After each petition: Hear us, O God, your mercy is great. ~ please stand, as you are able ~ The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ MEAL Offering Offertory Hymn If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the ONE Northside (see page 10 for more information). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. #396 Spirit of Gentleness Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue ~ please stand as you are able ~ [6]

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Preface Holy, Holy The spoken responses during the Thanksgiving at Table echo the presiding minister. Thanksgiving at the Table [7]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God Please remain standing. ~ please be seated ~ [8]

All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. ~ please stand ~ Show me thy ways O Lord, teach me thy paths; Lead me in thy truth and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation, And on thee do I wait all the day. (Text: Psalm 25:4, 5) Enrich my heart, mouth, hands in me with faith, with hope, with charity; That I may run, rise, rest with thee. Lord, who hast formed me out of mud, And hast redeemed me through thy blood, And sanctified me to do good; Purge all my sins done heretofore For I confess my heavy score And I will strive to sin no more. (Text: George Herbert, , alt.) SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #319 O Lord, Throughout These Forty Days Communion 9am Communion Anthem Show Me Thy Ways Walter Pelz (b. 1926) 11am Communion Anthem Enrich My Heart K. Commemorations This Week February 18 + Martin Luther, renewer of the church, died 1546 Though he began his adult church life as a simple Augustinian monk, Luther challenged the abuses he saw in the church, and his work eventually led to the Protestant Reformation. Luther's accomplishments included liturgical reform, translation of the Bible, and creation of the Small and Large Catechisms. February 23 + Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, martyr, died 156 Because he is said to have been known by John, the author of Revelation, as well as the important early church fathers Irenaeus and Ignatius, Polycarp serves as a vital link in church history. He was burned at the stake at age 86 for refusing to renounce his faith. Holy Week and Easter + Mark Your Calendars! 13 LENT 2018 AT HOLY TRINITY Daily Lenten Devotional We invite you to use "Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow" with its brief readings each day of Lent. It is available as a download in the weekly enews and special Lent , and there are paper copies available at the back of the church. Lenten Book Recommendation Soul-Centered: Spirituality for People on the Go by Jim Clarke. Short, easy-to-read chapter with reflection questions and suggested spiritual practices. Limited copies are available at the back of the church for $14. See Beau Surratt if you would like to use a credit card, or pay for it online at our giving site. Midweek Eucharist + Wednesdays at 9:30am One common Lenten practice is being more intentional about prayer and other spiritual disciplines. Prayer is a discipline that can be expressed in many ways. Perhaps this Lent, if you are free on Wednesday mornings, you might consider attending our regular midweek Eucharist as an expression of your Lenten prayer practice. Holden Evening Prayer + Wednesday, March 7 + 7pm Lenten Contemplative Worship A quiet service of music and word featuring Marty Haugen s beloved Holden Evening Prayer Lenten Breadbaking Retreat + Saturday, March am-3pm Lent is a traditional time for fasting and reflection. In our busy lives of instant gratification, the process of baking bread invites us to gain strength from engaging in a communal and prayerful process of mixing ingredients, kneading and waiting. The breadbaking retreat begins with tea and introductions and the fast is broken with a eucharist and a simple meal of vegetarian soup and fresh bread. You will go home with a fragrant, nutritious loaf of bread into which you have added your prayers and hopes. Please bring a mixing bowl and wooden spoon and an apron if you wish. Suggested donation: $15. Sign-up at the back of the church or the church office (office@htchicago.org). 14 WHAT SHALL I GIVE UP OR TAKE ON THIS LENT? For many Lent is a time to "give something up" like sweets, meat or alcohol. This "fast" can be a balance to our over-indulgent lives and prepare us for the feast of Easter. The traditional "disciplines" of Lent are fasting, almsgiving and prayer. You might want to consider your own ways to incorporate these aspects into your Lenten observance. Lent can also be a time to take something on for the season. Fasting can help us identify with those who are hungry and otherwise needy in our world. It can help us reflect on our own needs and hungers as well. You may want to eat simpler meals during Lent, or give up one meal a week (Wednesdays and Fridays are traditional fast days). Or you might consider fasting from television or other electronics. Or you could fast from complaining, fast from talking ill of others, or fast from rushing through your day. Almsgiving is what we give to others, especially those in need. Folks often begin with giving a financial gift that supports a cause such as world hunger, a food pantry, or many others. Consider also making a visit to someone who is sick, lonely or sad. Prayer is a discipline that can be expressed in many ways. Perhaps you could commit to being more regular in worship. You could spend time in silence, read a devotional book, or doing something prayerfully that will refresh your soul. Other things to give up or take on during Lent: 1. Take a day or portion of a day to renew your spiritual life. Don't be concerned about accomplishing anything. Go for a walk. Read a book for pleasure. Spend time with a loved one. 2. As you take something on find something else you can remove from your routine or schedule. 3. Find ways to simplify your life. Focus on essentials. 4. Turn off the TV, radio and computer (fast from screens) and do something more organic like cooking, writing, sewing, cleaning or crafts. 5. Spend some time alone and learn how to be comfortable with solitude and silence. 6. Consider balance in your life. Do you need to focus more on your physical, emotional, intellectual or social side? 7. Read an entire book of the Bible, such as Mark or John. Or use psalms as part of your time of prayer and centering. 8. Find ways to be generous and to give of your time, your financial resources, and your God-given talents and abilities. 9. Use Lent to do something you have previously put off or procrastinated. 10. Sign up to volunteer at the Lakeview Pantry, the Crib (shelter at Lakeview Lutheran), or South Loop Campus Ministry Sunday feeing program. These are a few suggestions to get your creative juices flowing. Consider what is appropriate for you during this Lenten season. How might you grow in faith and love and also prepare for the feast of Easter? [14]
