Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church July 2, :30 a.m. Lectionary 13 The welcome of baptism is for all God s children. This baptismal gift sets us free from the power of sin and death. In today s gospel, Christ promises that the disciple who gives a cup of cold water to the little ones serves Christ himself. From worship we are sent on our baptismal mission: to serve the little ones of this world and to be a sign of God s merciful welcome..

Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Prelude Prelude on Rhosymedre Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Stand and turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Gathering Hymn #526 God Is Here! Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen Be seated WORD First Reading Jeremiah 28:5-9 Matthew wrote about true and false teachers against the backdrop of his knowledge of Jewish religious history, which he saw as continued in the ministry of Jesus. Like Jeremiah, Jesus and the evangelist warn against false words that sound religiously pleasing. Just as Jeremiah suffered, so did Jesus, and so will contemporary believers. / 2 /

Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Psalm 89:1-4,15-18 Refrain Setting: Michael Krentz The cantor sings the refrain, the assembly repeats it and sings it as indicated. Tone Verses Your love, O LORD, forever will I sing; from age to age my mouth will pro- claim your faithfulness. For I am persuaded that your steadfast love is estab- lished forever; you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens. "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn an oath to Da- vid my servant: 'I will establish your line forever, and preserve your throne for all generations.'" Refrain Happy are the people who know the festal shout! They walk, O LORD, in the light of your presence. They rejoice daily in your name; they are jubilant in your righteousness. For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor our might is exalted. Truly, our shield belongs to the LORD; our king to the Holy One of Israel. Refrain Second Reading Romans 6:12-23 / 3 /

The church receives the message from Paul as a true word from God: lives of sin lead only to one s own death, but eternal life comes through incorporation into the death of Christ Jesus. Freedom is other than the popular idea that I can do anything I want to do; rather, the freedom of baptism is slavery to the righteousness of Christ. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Sung by the cantor and repeated by all as indicated. Setting: Wayne L. Wold You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Matthew 10:40-42 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. / 4 /

The church is called to trust that, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, God will reward those who live as faithful Christians. Matthew s belief that Christian preachers speak the words of Christ and bear the power of God has continued to figure in controversies over church leadership. Sermon Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Silence Hymn of the Day - #641 All Are Welcome stanza 3 -- women stanza 4 -- men Be seated. Prayers of Intercession After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our Prayer. Peace The Peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying. Peace be with you, or similar words. Be seated. MEAL Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table / 5 /

If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for RefugeeOne. Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Offertory Hymn #522 As We Gather at Your Table Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. / 6 /

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen Lamb of God / 7 /

Be seated. Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion Anthem I Will Sing of Thy Great Mercies Felix Mendelssohn ( ) Silence Please stand. Prayer Blessing I will sing of thy great mercies, O Lord, my Savior, and of thy faithfulness evermore. (Psalm 89:1) / 8 /

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Sending Hymn #729 The Church of Christ in Every Age Sending Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Postlude Postlude on Hyfrydol Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the garden to the east of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Today s Altar Flowers are sponsored by Deborah Stevens In memory of Doris Petersen Welcome to Guests today attending the World DIAKONIA Community Assembly held at Loyola this week. About 400 deacons and deaconesses are in Chicago for this world assembly held every four years. DIAKONIA World Federation is a global/ecumenical association of diaconal communities. About one-third of the attendees are from North America. There are large contingents from Germany and the Nordic countries where the diaconates have been strong, especially in the Lutheran churches. Others will come from Brazil, the Caribbean, several African countries, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and Korea. / 9 /

SERVING IN THIS LITURGY PRESIDING MINISTER Pr. Craig Mueller MINISTER OF MUSIC David Brackley CANTOR Deacon Marji Shannon ASSISTING MINISTER Ann Sanders CRUCIFER Megan White COMMUNION ASSISTANTS Matt James, James Perez, Barbara Wahler MEDITATION BELL Barbara Wahler READERS Mark Avery, Kerry Fleming WELCOME HOSPITALITY Adam Damerow, Erica and Michael Moriarty, James Stroker ALTAR GUILD Amy Avery BREAD BAKER Erin Miesner SACRISTAN Megan White COFFEE HOSPITALITY Ed Beach To families with small children: We are glad you're here! You're encouraged to sit toward the front where it's easier for children to see and hear. Children learn behavior by copying you, so sing the hymns loudly, pray and voice the responses with enthusiasm. There are activity bags and special children's bulletins in the back of the church for your children to use during worship. If your child needs a break during worship, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. The nursery is open from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Use the garden door entrance on Addison and the nursery is inside the door. Commemorations Thomas, Apostle July 3 Though frequently remembered as "doubting Thomas," this apostle also demonstrated a willingness to suffer and die with Jesus (John 11:16), and finally claimed the risen Christ as "my Lord and my God!" By tradition, he later worked as a missionary in India. Long commemorated on December 21, Thomas's celebration is moved to July 3 in agreement with ecumenical calendars. Jan Hus, martyr, died 1415 July 6 Hus was a Bohemian (present-day Czech Republic) priest who spoke against abuses in the church, and was seen by Martin Luther as his predecessor in the reforming movement. He was found guilty of heresy by a council of the church, and burned at the stake. Worship Acknowledgements Text and music for the liturgy is reprinted from Sundays and Seasons.com. 11 Refugee Support PARISH NOTES Holy Trinity is currently sponsoring two family members, Tesfalem and Lewan, Orthodox Christians from Eritrea. We have received two-thirds of our fundraising goal of $8,000. Loose offerings during July will benefit the refugee project, or give online at and select refugee support at the lower portion of the page. Thank you for your generosity! Baptism Seminar July 11, 7:00 p.m. Baptism isn't a one-time event--it's for life! Topics of the seminar will include baptismal theology, the role of parents and sponsors, and scheduling a baptism. All parents planning to have a newborn baptized are asked to attend this seminar at some point before the baptism of their firstborn child. RSVP required to Pastor Sevig prior to July 10th. Social Time Hosts Needed After worship, many of us enjoy socializing in the beautiful garden adjacent to the church. We need people to volunteer to host this summer. It doesn't need to be anything fancy or homemade, keep it simple. Hosts set up a table in the garden, make lemonade, serve a light refreshment and clean up. It's easy and fun. Sign up today on the clipboard at the back of the church. World Refugee Day Join refugees and advocates at Foster Beach (5200 N. Foster Avenue) on Saturday, July 8th from 11AM to 3PM to show your support for Chicago s refugee community. This annual event kicks off with a soccer tournament and continues throughout the day. Explore new foods, many of which will be prepared by members of the refugee community. Music from around the world will entertain guests and give them another glimpse at the many ways Chicago's diverse refugee community contributes to the city s culture. The event concludes with the annual "One Human Family" rally and march where everyone comes together in support of human rights. For more information or to learn about other upcoming World Refugee Day activities, visit the organizing committee s website: Holy Trinity Picnic Sunday, July 29, 11:00 am Following the 10:30 service and held on our grounds. Bring a salad or side dish to share. ELCA missionary (and former Holy Trinity seminarian) Kirsten Fryer, from Cairo, will preach at worship. / 11 /
