1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church November 13, :30 a.m. Lectionary 33c The tone of today s scripture texts is ominous: the end is near and the warnings are dire. But the baptized know how to live in the meantimes. The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. The baptized rally around the invitation of the apostle: Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

2 Prelude Variations on a Theme by Mozart Fernando Sor ( ) Confession & Forgiveness Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Following an invitation please kneel (if you are able). Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Stand and face the baptismal font. The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. Gathering Hymn #870 We Praise You, O God [2]

3 The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ WORD Addressing the exiles who had returned to Jerusalem from Babylon, the prophet proclaims a vision of a future time of peace and prosperity. Though the returned exiles are experiencing hard times, God is about to do a new thing. Prayer of the Day First Reading Isaiah 65:17-25 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: Sing a new song to the LORD, who has done marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory. O LORD, you have made known your victory, you have revealed your righteousness in the sight of the nations. You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; lift up your voice, re- joice, and sing. Refrain Sing to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn Psalm 98 Setting: David Cherwien The cantor sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. [3]

4 Second Reading 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Helgen shout with joy before the king, the LORD. Let the sea roar, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, who comes to judge the earth. The LORD will judge the world with righteousness and the peo- ples with equity. Refrain In this, the final excerpt in the ecumenical lectionary from 2 Thessalonians, Christians are called to live in the real present, rather than in an imagined ideal future. Care must be taken that this passage not be heard as condemning those countless people who cannot find adequate work, which was not a problem that the early church faced. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Luke 21:5-19 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. (Luke 21:28) The human fear of future terrors is perennial. Not breath-taking buildings, nor stunning art, nor religious affiliation, nor national pride, nor the stability of the earth, nor what our society likes to call family values will save: Christ is the one. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. [4]

5 ~ please stand ~ Hymn of the Day O Day of God, Draw Nigh Text: R.B.Y. Scot 1937, alt and Emmanuel College, Toronto, Ontario. Music: SOUTHWELL, W. Daman, The Psalmes of Dauid, 1579, alt. After each petition: Let us pray. Come, Lord Jesus. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Faith Story MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth. Sing to the Lord a new song: Cantate Domino. Worship the Lord with music, worship the Lord with song. Worship the Lord with music: Cantate Domino. Cantate Domino, sing unto God! Serve the Lord with gladness, serve the Lord with praise. Serve the Lord with gladness: Cantate Domino. ~ please stand ~ SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. [8]

9 #632 O God, Our Help in Ages Past Go in peace. Christ is coming soon. Thanks be to God! Sending Hymn Sending Postlude Nun danket alle Gott ( Now thank we all our God ) Sigfrid Karg-Elert ( ) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. If you have any questions, or would like to know more about our budget, please office@htchicago.org [13]

14 [14] Wherever you are in your spiritual life you are welcome you are invited to come and explore your spiritual questions with others at holy trinity. Life Together is a communal process of spiritual growth and renewal. Life Together is designed for those: + who did not grow up Christian and/or have not been baptized; + who are new to Lutheranism, liturgy, or a sacramental tradition; + who are estranged from the church but are now drawn to community and communal worship; + who are sensing a stirring of the Spirit, yet are filled with questions; + who may have grown up Lutheran but didn t think about it when they were confirmed, and would like to learn more about Christian faith and life in community; + who are parents wanting to grow in their faith as part of the baptismal promises they make on behalf of their children. Life Together is a place to bring questions, doubts, and hopes. Rather than giving answers (like a catechism), together we will seek wisdom for our lives from scripture, sacraments, liturgy and other Christian practices. We are making plans for LIFE TOGETHER sessions from January May There would be weekly sessions during Lent (March 5 April 2) with several additional sessions in January/February and several following Easter (April/May). We will schedule meeting times based on the schedules and preferences of the participants. One possible format is Sunday mornings 8:45 10:15 a.m. If enough people are interested, we may form several groups. To assist with our planning, it would be helpful for you to express initial interest in one of the below ways by November 30. We will provide additional information and answer questions. 1) P.r Craig Mueller (cmueller@htchicago.org) 2) speak with Pr. Mueller, Molly Beran, Carol or Ryan LaHurd Please share this information with others you know who may be interested in baptism, returning to church after a period away, or exploring questions of faith in a supportive, open community.
