Prelude Two Settings of O, Sing To The Lord Anne Krentz Organ, Mark Sedio Confession and Forgiveness Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. As you pass the baptismal font upon entering or leaving the church you may dip your hand in the water and make the sign of the cross. This is an ancient body prayer to remember you are a baptized child of God. Simply touch your forehead to chest, then your left to right shoulder. GATHERING All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. The presiding minister invites all to a time of silent confession. After each time of silence the following is sung: The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. Gathering Hymn O Holy Spirit, Enter In [2]

During the greeting the presiding minister and assembly bow toward one another. We learn from Eastern cultures the deep significance of a bow as a sign of mutuality and the presence of Christ among us. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Greeting Prayer of the Day [3]

WORD First Reading 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19 Psalm 24 Setting: Robert Buckley Farlee The cantor sings the refrain first and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly chant alternating verses. This year Holy Trinity uses an option for the first reading from the Hebrew scriptures (often called the Old Testament). Rather than complement the themes in the gospel, this cycle reads through the narratives related to the Davidic covenant and wisdom literature in a semi-continuous way. As much as possible, sermons will draw out key themes from these passages. In this passage from 2 Samuel, the ark of the covenant, long a symbol of God s presence with Israel, is brought into Jerusalem by David. The entrance of the ark into this new capital city is marked by great rejoicing, and David himself is the chief dancer. His wife Michal, King Saul s daughter, considers such behavior undignified. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: 1 The earth is the LORD s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For the LORD has founded it up- on the seas and established it up- on the rivers. Refrain 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD, and who may stand in God s holy place? 4 Those of innocent hands and puri- ty of heart, who do not swear on God s being, nor do they pledge by what is false. [4]

5 They shall receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of their salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek you, O LORD, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Refrain 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever- lasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, might- y in battle! 9 Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever- lasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? Truly, the LORD of hosts is the King of glory. Refrain Following the Psalm a period of silence is kept. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel as Christ the Word of God as it is proclaimed among us in this place and time. Gospel Acclamation The cantor sings the Alleluia and the assembly repeats. The cantor sings the verse. Verse: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know the hope to which our God has called us. (Eph. 1:17-18 [5]

Gospel Mark 6:14-29 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Oh, Sing to the Lord The sex and violence hinted at in this narrative have led to its popularity with artists. For believing Christians it can be a picture of the lengths to which political injustice might go toward its self-protection and of the possibility that Christian faithfulness can lead to persecution. Christ, to whom John points and whom he prefigures, is both the one who preaches against injustice and the one whose head was on the platter for us. Our weekly meal contrasts with Herod s banquet. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand as you are able ~ continued on next page [6]

After each petition: God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~please be seated~ MEAL Some of us give online; others place offerings in the basket. Honoring that we also share our gifts and talents in our daily lives, please touch the basket as it is passed through the assembly--a sign of your self-offering to God. Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Gathering of Gifts and Setting the Table Offertory Hymn We Come to the Hungry Feast [7]

The Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue and Preface Holy, Holy Thanksgiving at the Table We gather close around the table. You need only bring the bulletin if you need it for the responses. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Sung at the direction of the leader. The responses during the Thanksgiving at the Table echo the presiding minister. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. To you be honor and praise, blessed and Holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread Lamb of God (sung at the direction of the leader) [8]

All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Holy Trinity s radical welcome is also an invitation to baptism and a deeper connection to community. If you are not baptized, please speak to one of the pastors to learn more about the process of adult baptism. ~please stand as you are able ~ Let us pray. brief silence Amen. SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Please see the next page for the Sending Hymn. Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God!
