Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church April 15, am & 11am Third Sunday of Easter Liturgy at Holy Trinity In the Loop The gospel for the third Sunday of Easter is always one in which the risen Christ shares food with the disciples, meals that are the Easter template for the meal we share each Lord s day. In today s gospel, Jesus both shares the disciples food and shows them the meaning of his suffering, death, and resurrection through the scriptures: the two main elements of our Sunday worship.

Prelude 9am: Partita on Christ Jesus lay in death s strong bands Andrew Clarke (b. 1942) (text may be found in Hymn 370) 11am: Trumpet Tune in D David N. Johnson ( ) Gathering Hymn Easter Proclamation Thanksgiving for Baptism Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand as you are able and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. #366 The Strife is O er, the Battle Done Please turn to face the font at the center of the church. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, where indicated by the +. Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia! Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. The responses during the Thanksgiving for Baptism echo the presiding minister. to you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen During the canticle the assembly will be sprinkled with water from the baptismal font. As you receive the droplets you may make the sign of the cross in thanksgiving for the grace and mercy of our baptism into Jesus death and resurrection. [2]

[3] Canticle of Praise This Is The Feast

Greeting The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ WORD First Reading Acts 3:12-19 We need to beware of perpetuating the primitive Christian tendency to blame the Jews for Jesus death. The most profound Christian theological understanding is that we, our sins, were the cause of Jesus death. But we stand with Acts 3 when it calls Jesus the servant of God, the holy and righteous one, the author of life, the messiah of God, through whose suffering we are saved. Psalm 4 Setting: Robert Buckley Farlee The cantor/choir first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor/choir and assembly sing alternating verses. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: 1 Answer me when I call, O God, defender of my cause; you set me free when I was in distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. 2 You mortals, how long will you dishon- or my glory; how long will you love illusions and seek after lies? 3 Know that the LORD does wonders for the faithful; the LORD will hear me when I call. 4 Tremble, then, and do not sin; speak to your heart in silence up- on your bed. Refrain [4]

5 Offer the appointed sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. 6 Many are saying, Who will show us any good? Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD. 7 You have put gladness in my heart, more than when grain and wine abound. 8 In peace, I will lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me rest secure. Refrain The baptized live in the hope that through the power of the risen Christ, their lives will be marked by extraordinary countercultural love. Yet it is Christ, not the community itself, who is righteousness. Christian tradition has admired 1 John but balances its depiction of communal perfection with Pauline realism about sin. Second Reading 1 John 3:1-7 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Aaron David Miller Sung first by the cantor/choir and repeated by all as indicated. The verse is sung by the cantor/choir. Verse: Our hearts burn within us while you open to us the scriptures. (Luke 24:32) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. The risen Christ is here among us, eating with us, and that meal is part of the proclamation of the Messiah risen from the dead on the third day and offering forgiveness to all nations. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. [5] Gospel Luke 24:36b-48 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts.

Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day (11am only) Welcoming Newcomers Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Setting the Table Offertory Hymn Christ Is Arisen Alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand as you are able ~ #368 With High Delight Please see page 12. After each petition: Risen Lord, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate when you come up for communion or as you depart. Today s loose offering is designated for the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. 7 Text: German Hymn, c. 1100; tr. Martin L. Seltz, , 1969 Concordia Publishing House Music: J. Klug, Geistliche Lieder, 1543 Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue [7]

Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin; who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy Thanksgiving at the Table Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: The responses during the Thanksgiving at the Table echo the presiding minister. now and forever. [8]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Breaking of the Bread Please remain standing. [9]

Communion Communion Anthem (9am) Stay With Us Walter L. Pelz (b. 1926) (11am) Rise Now, My Heart, With Gladness Johann Crüger ( ) ~ please be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Stay with us till night has come; our praise to you this day be sung. Bless our bread open our eyes; Jesus, be our great surprise. Walk with us, our spirits sigh; hear when our weary spirits cry. Feel again our loss, our pain; Jesus, take us to your side. Walk with us, the road will bend; make all our weeping, wailing end. Wipe our tears, forgive our fears; Jesus, lift the heavy cross. Talk with us till we behold a joyful life you will unfold. Heal our eyes to see the prize; Jesus, take us to the light. Stay with us till day is done; no tears or dark shall dim the sun. Cheer the heart, your grace impart; Jesus, bring eternal life. (Text: Herbert F. Brokering, b. 1926) Rise now, my heart, with gladness; see what the Lord has done! Gone is all gloom and sadness, now shines the glorious sun! Like Christ, we too shall lie lifeless till he draw nigh And bids us then to rise to dwell above the skies. He in the grave descended, the foe held jubilee; Death s darkest pow rs are ended and Christ again is free. Now victory he cries as glory fills the skies. Our grateful songs ascend with joy that has no end. We to heav n s shining splendor shall rise to realms of light. There we all praise shall render to Christ in glory bright. [10]

My savior is my shield; by him all rage is stilled; All who in him shall die are raised to him on high. (Text: Paul Gerhardt, ; trans. John Kelly, ) ~please stand as you are able ~ Let us pray. brief silence Amen. SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #548 Rise, O Church, Like Christ Arisen Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Go in peace. Share the good news. Thanks be to God! Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the rear of the nave for refreshments and social time. The loose offering this morning will benefit the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). The mission of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, a seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is to form visionary leaders to bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. They seek to build up the Body of Christ and work for a world of peace and justice that cares for the whole creation. LSTC is Christ-centered, responsive to its context, attentive to diversity and committed to excellence. 12 (11am only) Welcoming Newcomers Apostles Creed Address & Questions Welcome With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. In baptism, we are welcomed into the body of Christ and sent to share in the mission of God. We are called to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Siblings in Christ, do you intend to continue in the covenant of your baptism among God's people in this place? Those being welcomed respond. I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these newcomers in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Let us welcome these siblings in Christ to this community of faith. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. [12]
