LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY LECTIONARY 32 TIME AFTER PENTECOST (YEAR B) NOVEMBER 11, :30AM WELCOME TO HOLY TRINITY! It is a joy to have you join us for worship this morning. Wherever you re from, wherever you are in life, spirituality, or religion, we are glad you are here. We invite guests to fill out the yellow slip handed out with this bulletin and place it in the offering plate. Visit the Welcome Table in the narthex to pick up information about Holy Trinity, Lutheranism, worship practices, marriages and baptisms. TO PARENTS WITH SMALL CHILDREN: We are glad your family is worshipping with us. If you or your child needs a break from the service, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. We also have a nursery available and it is open from 8:15 11:30. Please use the garden entrance (on Addison); the nursery is right inside the door. Children s bulletins are available from the ushers. LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME? Holy Trinity could be the place for you. On the yellow slip in the pew rack there is a place to request more information, or your interest in membership. Orientation sessions are held four times per year. OFFERINGS: We rely almost entirely on the generosity of members and friends to support the programs, staff, building, and ministries of Holy Trinity and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Many members give their offering through Electronic Funds Transfer; you can also donate online at holytrinitychicago.org. We appreciate your contributions of time, talent and financial support!

ABOUT TODAY S LITURGY: Widows are visible everywhere in today's readings. Jesus denounces those scribes who pray impressive prayers but devour widows' houses. He commends the poor widow who in his view gave far more than the major donors. Jesus doesn't see her simply as an object of compassion or charity. She, like the widow of Zarephath who shares her last bit of food with Elijah, does something of great importance. Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for the liturgy. PRELUDE Divertimento in D Major F. Joseph Haydn ( ) i. Adagio *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Following an invitation please kneel (if you are able). Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Stand and face the baptismal font. The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. 2

*GATHERING HYMN #679 For the Fruit of All Creation *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *PRAYER OF THE DAY WORD FIRST READING: 1 Kings 17:8 16 This chapter begins the story of Elijah. God sends a drought on Israel because of the sins of King Ahab. This passage depicts God s saving acts not only on behalf of Elijah, but also on behalf of those who are associated with the prophet, even a foreigner, the widow of Zarephath. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 146 Setting: Marty Haugen Refrain is sung by the cantor and repeated by the assembly. Verses are sung by the cantor. Refrain: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Refrain. Put not your trust in rulers, in mortals in whom there is no help. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish. Refrain. 3

Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the Lord their God; who made heaven and earth, the seas and all that is in them; who keeps promises forever; who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The Lord sets the captive free. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord cares for the stranger; the Lord sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The Lord shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! Refrain. SECOND READING: Hebrews 9:24 28 The letter to the Hebrews describes Christ as a high priest who offers himself as a sacrifice for our sin. Christ does not die again and again each year. He died once, is alive with God, and will reveal himself on the last day. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Sung by the cantor; then repeated by the assembly. Carl F. Schalk The LORD raises up the poor from the dust, to make them inherit a seat of honor. (1 Sam. 2:8) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. *GOSPEL: Mark 12:38 44 After engaging in a series of public arguments with religious leaders in the temple, Jesus contrasts the proud and oppressive ways of those leaders with the sacrificial humility and poverty of the widow. The holy gospel according to Mark. As the gospel is announced you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips, and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. SILENCE People Watching 4

Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE *HYMN OF THE DAY #685 Take My Life, That I May Be stanza 3 in harmony stanza 4 women stanza 5 men *WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS Introduction Apostles Creed With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Address and Questions People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these new members in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Welcome Let us welcome these sisters and brothers in Christ to this community of faith. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. 5

*PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Hear us, O God, Your mercy is great *PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING THE TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Make me pure, O sacred Spirit Make me pure, O sacred Spirit, Touch my heart, my voice restore. Break, O godly Guest, my silence, Help my speaking, help my witness, Til this voice can speak no more! (Text trans. Susan Palo Cherwien) Georg P. Telemann ( ) *GREAT THANKSGIVING 6

The following acclamations are sung during the thanksgiving: During the prayer the assembly sings these responses. 7

As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER *COMMUNION *LAMB OF GOD 8

Be seated. All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. HYMN #790 Day by Day SILENCE Stand. *PRAYER *BLESSING SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *SENDING HYMN #695 As Saints of Old *SENDING Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be God. Approached by a beggar, Martin cut his cloak in half and gave part to the man, whom he later understood as representing Christ. He asked to leave the army, but was jailed instead. After his release, he became a preacher, and later a bishop. Sunday, November 11 Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, teacher, died 1855 Kierkegaard was a Danish theologian whose writings also gave rise to the modern philosophy of existentialism. He frequently attacked the complacency of the state church of his day, as well as its desire to be accepted by polite society rather than be a stumbling block. Saturday, November 17 Elizabeth of Hungary, renewer of society, died 1231 Born in Hungary, Elizabeth was betrothed to the son of the Landgrave of Thuringia, and at age four was taken to be raised with him at the Wartburg Castle. 15 Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather each Sunday to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things We re For Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things We re Against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. 15
