Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. 2 ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: "O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" Today we celebrate the name of God: holy blessed Trinity. There is no other day quite like this one in the church s year. There is no other god like ours. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. 3 suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 5 WORD FIRST READING: Proverbs 8:1-4, Christ, to whom the Trinity attests, was likened by the church fathers to this Woman Wisdom. Here already God is described as a plurality. For Christians, God is triune from the beginning: thus traditional biblical translations saw in Genesis 1:2-3 the Creator God, the Spirit (ruah), and the Word ("and God said"). In Christianity, the created world is very good, filled with the goodness of the triune Creator. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. RESPONSE Praise the Lord George F. Händel ( ) Praise the Lord. Let songs of joy break forth. Sing alleluia. Praise His name forevermore. Shout, sing and dance, come dance and celebrate. Rejoice; let all within us praise His name. SECOND READING: Romans 5:1-5 Paul's point is clear and currently rather counter-cultural: God is available not to everyone, but to us through Jesus Christ, through whom we receive God's Spirit. The Spirit is not just any spirit, but a spirit that comes through the cross. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Hallelujah Sung first by the choir then by all. 5

6 *GOSPEL: John 16:12-15 That we are called Christian, the ones marked by Christ, is clear in this passage: the Father and the Spirit declare the truth we have witnessed in the crucified and risen Christ. Today in worship we receive this truth in the proclamation of this word. The holy gospel according to John. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sung in canon once through, as a round. (1) West side (piano side) of Nave begins; (2)East side of Nave follows; (3) finally, the choir joins. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 7

9 Be seated. COMMUNION All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. ANTHEM We Are Yours Mark Patterson Holy God, creator of our inmost being, you spoke our first full thoughts and breathed our innocent prayers. You ve healed us, you ve led us, you ve loved us, you ve loved us, Holy God. Now we come to worship you. We come to worship you, mighty God, we come to praise you, Holy one, giving praise to your name in all we do, we are yours Lord. May our lives bring glory to you. Guest Choir Today Cantate Choir is the high school choir at St. Mary s Lutheran Church in Kenosha, WI. The choir has 29 members from five different high schools. The group meets for weekly 50-minute rehearsals on Sunday mornings. Every spring the group takes a trip or tour. In the past these have taken them to: Minneapolis, MN; Door County and Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL. Last summer the choir took a week-long Music Mission trip to Kure Beach, NC where the group led a music camp for area children. Linda Schmidt is Minister of Music at St. Mary s. She directs 4 vocal choirs, 2 bell choirs, and oversees 5 other ensembles. This is Linda s 13 th year at St. Mary s. She is the Handbell Reviewer for Cross Accent, the journal of ALCM (Association of Lutheran Church Musicians). We welcome Linda and Cantate Choir to Holy Trinity today!
