Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church August 28, :30 a.m. Lectionary 22c Invited and inviting that is the nature of the church. By God s grace in holy baptism we have a place at the banquet table of the Lord. When, by the power of that same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us, the church can be more inviting still.

Prelude Kegelstatt Trio in E- flat Major, K. 498 I. Andante Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) Gathering Hymn Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading Proverbs 25:6-7 Psalm 103:1-8 Setting: John Paradowski GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #707 Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. WORD The short reading places the advice to humility centuries before Christ. Jesus is our monarch, and he says to us, Come up here, and up to the table we go. The cantor first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor and assembly sing alternate verses. Tone: [2]

Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the LORD and have great delight in God's commandments! Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Refrain Wealth and riches will be in their house, and their righteousness will last forever. Light shines in the darkness for the upright; the righteous are merciful and full of compassion. It is good for them to be gener- ous in lending and to manage their af- fairs with justice. For they will nev- er be shaken; the righteous will be kept in everlast- ing remembrance. Refrain They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; their heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. Their heart is established and will not shrink, until they see their desire up- on their enemies. They have given freely to the poor, and their righteousness stands fast forever; they will hold up their head with honor. The wicked will see it and be angry; they will gnash their teeth and pine away; the desires of the wick- ed will perish. Refrain This, the lectionary s last semi-continuous selection from the book of Hebrews is a collection of directives to the church, many of which are countercultural. Those with faith are now a community of care. The beliefs that God will never leave us and that Jesus Christ is always the same contrast with the temple and its sacrifices, which pass away. Although close congruence of the second reading and the gospel during post-pentecost is not intended, on this Sunday the call for hospitality to strangers and for sharing with others fits well with the gospel reading. Second Reading Hebrews 13:1-8, Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [3]

Gospel Acclamation The cantor sings first and the assembly repeats. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Luke 14:1, 7-14 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Christ s call is to countercultural behavior: the society is hierarchical, but the church is to enact a surprising acceptance of the poor, to give to others with no expectation of return. Jesus is the model, who gave himself all the way to death, and who was indeed repaid in his resurrection. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ Hymn of the Day If Life is Like a Wedding Feast [4]

Text: Michael Hudson 2004; admin. Church Publishing Inc. Music [RESIGNATION, CMD]: Funk s Compilation of Genuine Church Music, 1832; harm. By Richard Proulx ( ) After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for RefugeeOne (more info on page 11). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering [5]

Offertory Hymn Great Thanksgiving Dialogue and preface The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy #522 As We Gather at Your Table ~ please stand ~ The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. [6]

Lamb of God Please remain standing. ~ be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. O God of mercy, O God of light, in love and mercy infinite, Teach us, as ever in your sight, to live our lives in you. Teach us the lesson Jesus taught: to feel for those his blood has bought, That ev ry deed and word and thought may work a work for you. And may your Holy Spirit move all those who live to live in love, Till you receive in heav n above those who have lived to you. (Text: Godfrey Thring, , alt.) ~ please stand ~ SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Communion Communion Anthem O God of mercy Gerre Hancock ( ) arr. Paul Bouman (b. 1918) Silence Prayer Blessing [7]

Sending Hymn Thankful Hearts and Voices Raise Text: John W. Arthur ( ). Music: Ronald A. Nelson (b. 1927). Both 1978, 1995 Augsburg Fortress Sending Postlude Psalm XX Gordon Young ( ) Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God! Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Altar Flowers are sponsored by Richard Bough & David Easterbrook in memory of H. Lloyd Easterbrook [8]

Commemorations for the Week August 28 Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, died 430 Augustine was one of the greatest theologians of the Western church. A native of North Africa, he recovered from a debauched young adulthood through the influence of his mother, Monica, and Bishop Ambrose of Milan. Besides writing influential theological books, he served as bishop of Hippo, in present-day Algeria. August 28 Moses the Black, monk, martyr, died around 400 Converted from life as a thief and a robber to Christianity, Moses was an Ethiopian who became a desert monk at Skete. His conversion had a great impact in his native country. Wearing a white habit, he said, "God knows I am black within." He was murdered during an attack by Berbers. September 2 Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig, bishop, renewer of the church, died 1872 Grundtvig was, with Søren Kierkegaard, one of the two great Danish theologians of the nineteenth century. As a pastor, he battled the prevalent idea that Christianity was more a philosophy than divine revelation. He wrote over a thousand hymns.
