GATHERING Prelude Rondeau and Air Henry Purcell ( ) Gathering Hymn Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading 2 Samuel 11:26 12:10, The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #823 Praise the Lord! O Heavens The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ WORD The Elijah miracle is set next to the narrative of Luke 7 to show that Jesus stands in the tradition of the miracle-working prophets, who speak God s word with power and who can save us from death. Christian tradition came to say far more about Jesus than that he was a great prophet, but as such he speaks God s word Let there be... and so creates life in the world. Word of God, word of life. 3 Refrain: Blest is the one whose sin is forgiv n, and whose wrongs are put far away. Happy is the one free of guilt, whose spirit is pure, whose words are the truth. Refrain When I refused to confess all my sin, my body wasted away. Day and night my sins were before me; my strength dried up like the summer s heat. Refrain Then I declared my sin to the Lord, and my heavy guilt I confessed; God forgave all my transgressinons; my sin and guilt were taken away. Refrain When the faithful have floods rushing down, those same floods are beyond their reach. The Lord will be their hiding place, salvation s joy shall be their song. Refrain Paul writes that we are the sinners who, seeking to be right with God, have received God s grace through our faith in Christ s justifying death. Reading this passage on this Sunday makes it seem as if Paul was writing a commentary on 2 Samuel and Luke. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Psalm 32:1-7 Setting: Hal H. 4 Gospel Luke 7:36 8:3 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering Offertory Hymn We too are the woman who has sinned much, who comes to honor the body of Christ, and who has faith in God s salvation. The body of Christ that we now honor is incarnate in the bodies of those around us. In this biblical excerpt, women are both sinners and saints. Omit any reference to the medieval suggestion that the anointing woman was Mary Magdalene: there is no need to perpetuate this error. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 9 Book Group Meeting June 16 Eat, Drink, Read. The book group will be meeting for dinner on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Andies, (5253 N Clark). We won't be discussing a book this month, but please come with book suggestions for July! Service Opportunities Serve A Meal At The Crib Shelter Saturday, June :00 p.m. Volunteers from HTLC will prepare then serve a meal at The Crib youth shelter (at Lakeview Lutheran, 835 W Addison). We begin with worship at 5:00 p.m. at HTLoop (637 S. Dearborn). Then we have a short walk to Millennium Park for a potluck picnic on the lawn at 6:30 p.m. (bring an appetizer, salad or desert to share; your own drink, plate and utensils). 10 Pride Parade June 26 Walk with HTLC in the pride parade. It's always a great experience to show our pride in our church as one of the welcoming congregations in Chicago. Speak with Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) if you'll be able to join us this year. T-Shirts for sale again. Last year's HTLC t-shirts were a big hit. Wear them in the parade, when volunteering at the Lakeview Pantry, The Crib Shelter or "Takin It To The Streets," or just for the fun of it at any time. Samples available in back of the church. Basil's monastic rule forms the basis for Eastern monastic life. Gregory of Nazianzus defended orthodox Christianity in Constantinople. Gregory of Nyssa, Basil's younger brother, wrote on the spiritual life. Macrina, older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, was the leader of a community dedicated to asceticism, meditation, and prayer. [10]
