LITURGY AT HOLY TRINITY Second Sunday in Lent February 24, :30 am To Our Guests: Welcome! Whoever you are, wherever you're from, or whatever your feelings about religion or spirituality, you are welcome here. Please fill out a yellow slip in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate. The next orientation session (to find out more or for those interested in membership): Sunday, April 7. More information on Holy Trinity, Lutheranism, worship practices, marriage and baptisms at the back of the church. To families with small children: We are glad you are here! If your child needs a break from the service, feel free to walk to the narthex/back of the church. Nursery: open 8:15-11:30 a.m. Use the garden entrance on Addison; nursery is inside the door. Special children's bulletins are on a table at the back of the church.

ABOUT TODAY'S LITURGY: Though we sometimes doubt and often resist God's desire to protect and save us, our God persists. In holy baptism, God's people have been called and gathered into a God-initiated relationship that will endure. Lent provides the church with a time and a tradition in which to seek the face of the Lord again. Lent provides another occasion to behold the God of our salvation in the face of the Blessed One who "comes in the name of the Lord." Please turn off all cell phones before the liturgy begins. * those who are able may stand Bold all This bulletin is available in large print GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. PRELUDE Praeludium in e minor Nicolaus Bruhns ( ) At the sound of the handbell, please stand and face the rear of the nave. In Lent the confession is sung as a penitential litany. The procession represents our journey from confession to forgiveness, from death to life, from captivity to freedom, and from Lent to Easter. *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. 2 For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness. For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves.

For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Refrain For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare. For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation. For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm. For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Refrain The presiding minister addresses the assembly: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. *GREETING The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 3

*KYRIE Setting: Deutsche Mass, Franz Schubert *PRAYER OF THE DAY *INSTALLATION OF THE CONGREGATION COUNCIL 4

WORD FIRST READING: Genesis 15:1 12, The Spirit of God, manifest as fire, visits us with the promise of life: a life imaged both as multiple descendants and as a homeland. Like Abram, we believe in this promise, and such faith counts as righteousness. In the cross, Christ takes on the lot of the slain animals. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 27 The refrain is sung by the cantor and repeated by the assembly. Cantor and assembly sing alternating pairs of verses. Refrain: Tone: The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers close in against me to de- vour my flesh, they, my foes and my enemies, will stum- ble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear. Though war rise up against me, my trust will not be shaken. One thing I ask of the LORD; one thing I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life; to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek God in the temple. Refrain For in the day of trouble God will give me shelter, hide me in the hidden places of the sanctuary, and raise me high up- on a rock. Even now my head is lifted up above my enemies who surround me. Therefore I will offer sacrifice in the sanctuary, sacrifices of rejoicing; I will sing and make music to the LORD. Hear my voice, O LORD, when I call; have mercy on me and answer me. My heart speaks your message-- "Seek my face." Your face, O LORD, I will seek. 5

Refrain: Hide not your face from me, turn not away from your ser- vant in anger. Cast me not away--you have been my helper; forsake me not, O God of my salvation. Though my father and my moth- er forsake me, the LORD will take me in. Teach me your way, O LORD; lead me on a level path, because of my oppressors. Subject me not to the will of my foes, for they rise up against me, false witnesses breathing violence. This I believe--that I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD and be strong. Take heart and wait for the LORD! Refrain SECOND READING: Philippians 3:17 4:1 Now we are those who are citizens of heaven an activist image, an urban picture. During Lent we join with Paul in awaiting our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: "Lord," the divine title we Christians give to "Jesus," which is the given name "Joshua," whom we honor as "Christ," the one anointed by God to transform the world. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Aaron David Miller Sung by the cantor. The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. (John 3:14-15) *GOSPEL: Luke 13:31-35 We are like helpless chicks; a fox is lurking; and Christ is our mother hen. Lent is a time to cast out demons and to await the third day when Christ finishes his work of salvation. We give to Jesus Christ the divine "name of the Lord." The holy gospel according to Luke. As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. 6

Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. SILENCE *HYMN OF THE DAY #791 We Sing to You, O God *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Please kneel (if you are able) Hear us, O God, your mercy is great. *PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. MEAL GATHERING OF GIFTS AND SETTING OF TABLE Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. OFFERTORY HYMN #613 Thy Holy Wings 7

*GREAT THANKSGIVING Sing in harmony during prayer Setting: Deutsche Mass, Franz Schubert 8

During the prayer, the assembly sings these responses: 9

As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. *THE LORD S PRAYER *COMMUNION *LAMB OF GOD Setting: Deutsche Mass, Franz Schubert 10

Be seated. All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. ANTHEM O love that wilt not let me go Richard Ellsasser ( ) SILENCE Stand. O love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be. O light that followest all my way, I yield my flick ring torch to thee; My heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine s blaze its blaze May brighter, fairer be. O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain That morn shall tearless be. O cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red Life that shall endless be. (Text: George Matheson, ) *PRAYER 11

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. *BLESSING Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. *SENDING HYMN #783 Praise and Thanks and Adoration *SENDING Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE Chaconne in g minor Louis Couperin (ca ) Join us for social time and refreshments following worship. 13 PARISH NOTES Bring pantry items during Lent. As we simplify our meals and our coffee hour at church, we invite you to bring items for the Lakeview Pantry for the season of Lent and place them in the basket in the narthex. As Easter approaches, we will join other Lakeview churches in a special drive for the pantry, and we will be given a special item to provide. Valparaiso Alumni Lunch Sunday, March :45 a.m. Valparaiso Alumni (members and friends) are invited to a lunch on Sunday, March 3, following the 10:30 a.m. service. The Rev. Brian Johnson, Executive Director of Campus Ministries at Valparaiso, will preach at worship and will join us at the lunch. Main course and salad provided; you are welcome to bring desserts and appetizers. HT Movie Night: A Separation Saturday, March 9 + 5:00 p.m. The next film will be A Separation, the 2012 Academy Award winner for best foreign language film by writer/director Asghar Farhadi. Sing for Lent and Easter Even though choir membership grew this past fall, we have had several losses for 2013 due to people moving away, illness and schedule conflicts. The bottom line? If you re a singer we need you! Please consider being a part of this exciting ministry at Holy Trinity for the seasons of Lent and Easter! Most rehearsals are held on Sunday morning at 9:15, and no one is expected to be here 100% of the time! Contact David Brackley, Minister of Music (dbrackley@htchicago.org) or Sean Diller, Music Assistant (music@htchicago.org) for more details! Offerings We rely almost entirely on the generosity of members and friends to support the programs, staff, building, and ministries of Holy Trinity and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Many members give their offering through Electronic Funds Transfer; you can also donate online at giving.htchicago.org. We appreciate your contributions of time, talent and financial support! 13

The posture of kneeling during Lent suggests repentance and dependence on God. You are welcome to use the pew kneelers before the liturgy or after receiving communion. E nvironment: During Lent our worship environment and liturgy are simplified, helping us to focus on essentials. Flowers are not used during Lent and the word alleluia is not spoken or sung until Easter. The icons have been removed and the stones and bare branches in the worship space evoke the wilderness. The word Lent means spring and we await the turning of winter to spring as we prepare our hearts with joy for the annual paschal celebration of Jesus death and resurrection. 15
